History

Established in 2005.

The prestigious address of One King West was home to the head office of The Dominion Bank, a residency that would last an impressive 126 years.

In 1914, the bank’s rise to national prominence led to the construction of an early 12-​story skyscraper. Beaux-​Arts in style with Renaissance Revival detailing, the building was a major work of Darling and Pearson, Architects, in co-​operation with Harkness and Oxley, Engineers.

By 1999 and the Dominion Bank Building, now deemed a Heritage Building, was carefully redesigned for residential use by Stanford Downey Architect. This redesign saw the creation of the second tower adjacent to the building, aptly nicknamed «The Sliver», due to its dramatically slender profile.

By 2006 the transformation was finally complete, resulting in One King West Hotel and Residence. Today, guests of the hotel are treated to the historical splendour of the Dominion Bank Building along with the modern sophistication of luxurious hotel amenities and services.

I am writing this review as my family and I viewed the hotel as a potential wedding venue about a year ago. The hotel itself is beautiful and historic, they’ve done well to maintain the historic charm and integrity of the building. We were originally drawn to the space because we are having a small intimate wedding and this was one of the few places in the city where you can hold a small reception.
The room that we were shown was the Chairman’s boardroom and it was very beautiful but could be cleaned a little better, there was quite a bit of dust on the wood panelling and the curtains were pretty dusty as well. I’m giving this a 3 star review purely based on the hotel and room itself but I was disappointed with the customer service.
The day of our appointment we arrived and I went to the front desk to inform them of my appointment, the woman at the front desk I found to be a bit rude, when I gave her my name she couldn’t see that I had an appointment booked so I showed her my email, her response was «okay well you can sit down and someone will get you when we’re ready» she was pretty snappy and dismissive. We sat down on the sofa for quite a long while until a woman came to greet us (I can’t remember her name but she was heavily pregnant and was really delightful and sweet) she was not who we were supposed to meet with as our original time slot had been double booked. Again she was very nice and helpful but I found it very unprofessional that our appointment had been double booked.
All in all the wedding pricing and the venue itself is nice but my family and I were just put off by the experience.

I am reviewing One King West as a potential wedding venue, we did not stay in the hotel, only came for a site visit to see if it was appropriate for our wedding.
One King West has always been my dream wedding venue and I was excited to check it out as a potential space for our wedding in late 2016. I had been to an event years earlier and was very impressed at the time.
We arrived and I checked in at the desk to let them know that we had arrived. And then we waited. And waited some more. The lobby space is very open and spacious, so the reception desk was across from the area where we were told to wait. I felt like the communication from the hotel wasn’t great here — they could have come over and let us know that the coordinator was running late with another couple instead of us sitting around trying to spot someone that looked like a coordinator.
A few things to note about this hotel — much of the hotel is still original. So this means that the elevators are very small, the five of us squished in every time we had to travel somewhere. As well, there’s a lot of really beautiful historical detail throughout the hotel, original wood and marble, a very gorgeous place.
We started on the 12th floor where the ceremony would be held. While the room was okay, it wasn’t anything special. There’s a lot of wood going on here, so if you’re not into wood, that may be something you should pay attention to. Once the ceremony was over, cocktail hour is to be held one floor up. So you and your guests will take the stairs or elevator one floor up, which looks down on the ceremony space (no ceiling between 12 and 13 over the ceremony space). Cocktail reception area was nice, some very nice art and good views from there as well. Not the best space for mingling but it would do.
Here’s my main issue — then we had to go back down to the second floor to the main banking hall where the actual reception would be. I cannot imagine how long it would take those TINY ELEVATORS to get 100 – 120 people downstairs for dinner. It just seemed like a logistical nightmare.
The grand banking hall is indeed impressive but this time around, it fell a bit flat for me. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just didn’t look as impressive as I’d remembered. The coordinator here was lovely, very helpful, very informative and very responsive to any questions we had.
Overall, this could be a lovely wedding venue but it wasn’t for us!

I am overwhelmingly in love with this place. Best hotel experience I’ve ever had.
This place is beautiful. Apparently they’ve just had a remodel and I have to say that they got their money’s worth. The lobby is immaculate and stunning to walk into. Me and my friend were both impressed when we walked in the front door. I asked about exchanging currencies but the offer they gave me didn’t seem appealing (and later find out that it was 17% less than exchange rate they offered in a place a few minutes walking distance away which is pretty bad), so I decided against it.
So I opted to stay here because of the pictures I saw online and I was very impressed with it. When I walked into the room, I was blown away. The pictures did it no justice. the views were beautiful since I was on the 46th floor and once the sun set and the buildings lights came on, it was like a totally different experience. I find myself just sitting in front of the windows and just taking it all in for long periods of time. Everything seemed new, furniture, fixtures, everything.
On the 17th floor there is a fitness center and on the 12th floor there is an elevator that connects to the historic elevator which takes you to the underground shopping district that connects all over the place. How convenient is that? I rented a car from the attendant so I could take a trip to Niagra Falls and they were super helpful. Great staff at this place. I am very impressed.
It’s the little things that really go a long way. They have light fixtures and outlets that you can charge with regular cords or with USB fixtures. Very convenient. The heating worked great and the big screen t. v was great. The internet is extremely fast and loads almost instantaneously. I can’t say enough about this place. Best place ever.

Our overall experience was ok, but was expecting better quality of service based off the good reviews and the price we paid.
Room was clean & comfy & as advertised in the photos. WiFi was included with our room, beds were comfortable and kitchenette was a nice amenity. We did have a problem with the heat constantly running even though we had turned down the setting.
Unfortunately, we had several issues with service. The Bell desk/​conceirge misinformed us about parking options, first telling us that the only parking option was to use valet. We had to ask 3 different people to get a clear answer about the off-​site parking & prices, which was a pain considering one in our party is handicapped. Check-​in was quick and worker was friendly, but she failed to go over any amenities/​info regarding the hotel. They also failed to tell us about the $ 90 CAD valet hold they put on my card, & we had a hard time getting a straight answer on another $ 380 charge which they said would only be $ 250 room hold, that was charged to our card. So the hotel held up an extra $ 210 that we weren’t expecting. Our first morning we woke up to maids loudly talking & eating food in the hallway for over 25 minutes. When we called the front desk, they said they would take care of it, which they did, but we really didn’t get an apology or anything. Lastly the concierge gave us bad info about a special of $ 7 admission after 7pm at the Aquarium, which once we got to the Aquarium, found out wasn’t true.
At check out, they didn’t ask us about our stay or experience really, which we thought was abnormal. Probably won’t stay here again bc of the frustrating service.

Very good hotel. Parking was an absolute pain though, you must use valet parking. That’s the only drawback of this hotel.
Breakfast was good, and my room was newly renovated. Internet speed was good too. I had a corner room and the view was great.
I would stay here again.

I have already sent in an email to staff at One King West. I was utterly disappointed with my stay. It was a very nice and fancy hotel. I loved the style of everything. What put me off was the staff’s inability to quite down a problematic guest who played nicky 9 doors all night and had his conversation in the hallways all night long. The heating system sounds like a nuclear reactor. It was just a loud loud loud night. And after calling the front desk and being assured it would be taken cared of, nothing was done. I do not recommend the One King West at all.

Very nice hotel. Nothing ‘wow’ed me though. The layout of the balcony room we were in was quite awkward and this particular layout doesn’t actually have a «sitting area», just a chair tucked into the corner. I will admit that chair is quite comfy — but in a pretty awkward spot. The bathroom is also super awkward, you have to walk in then step to the side between the toilet and the wall and close the door in order to access the sink or the shower. The kitchenette was nothing to complain about, although we didn’t cook anything it was quite nice to have that option. The woman who checked us in was very nice, asked if we were here for any special occasion and what we were doing. She also asked if we needed any help finding local attractions etc. One last awkward thing; I’m usually a decently heavy sleeper however at 0530 it sounded like someone was trying to get into our room, fiddling with the lock/​door. I got up to see what it was and no one was there but the invoice was left under the door. While it is nice to have a copy of the invoice, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels where I was not woken up by them sliding a piece of paper under the door and do not really understand why touching the door or door handle would need to be involved in that at all. 4⁄5 stars as it is a nice hotel at a decent price in a great location however I was certainly not «blown away».

Great hotel. We stayed in a king tower suite and it was lovely. Very clean, new and had a great view. The breakfast was overpriced at $ 24.00 but there is a nice coffee shop called plenty which sells croissants and sandwiches along with coffee located in the building.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone !!

My first Unilocal review. I am just so confused by my stay here. We only stayed for one night and were on a tight schedule during our trip, so we really didn’t have time to adequately voice our concerns. Still, these are concerns.
The negative: Our room was NOT as advertised. The floor plan and pictures we were shown upon booking an upgraded suite featured a 2+ person sitting/​television area separate from the sleeping area. The room we were placed in was a standard hotel room; TV across from the bed, desk, single chair, cramped little bathroom. Very few of the fixtures were in working order. The frame for the pocket door leading to the bathroom was entirely unfinished; there was nothing but raw wood where there should’ve been the second half of the door. The bathroom door wouldn’t shut.
We also had a miserable time with late night room service. Our original order came to our door prepared wrong to the point of inedibility. The replacement meal had a thick black hair baked into it, but it had been over an hour since we placed our original order at this point and we had to be up early so we just fell asleep hungry and ate the $ 50 cost of a dinner never eaten.
The positive: Everything else! Never before have I dealt with such a universally courteous staff. The bell desk supervisor we dealt with during our stay was smart, capable, and approachable. Valets lent a hand without us even noticing. All three bartenders who served us were fun and capable.
The common areas were all beautifully decorated. Save for the egregious branded signage everywhere, it felt like the kind of place an action movie would film their fancy undercover mission.
I would definitely come back to the One King West for my next trip to Toronto… But I’d make sure to leave time in my itinerary to advocate for the style of room I paid for and avoid anything from the hotel kitchens.

Me and my girlfriend booked a suite last night on the 14th floor. Was very satisfied with the room and what came with it. A fully equipped kitchen, laundry, dryer, and very spacious. I wouldn’t mind having a condo like the room I had. The bedroom was only big enough for a bed, TV and cabinet which was fine for me personally. The only drawback was the view, which we didn’t have. The windows were up so high that we couldn’t even look out them. Not sure why it was designed that way but it definitely took away from an otherwise great experience. Also, ordered nachos which were very basic, but expensive, as expected.

I have stayed at this hotel at least 15 times. It is my go-​to place to stay for concerts and Yankee @ Jays games. They offer free wifi if you book directly with the hotel– which helps with the international phone plans. In addition, it’s high quality wifi. I’ve never had trouble with connection.
The hotel is a bit pricey, but worth it, in my opinion. The location is perfect. You are within walking distance from many important Toronto locations: Eaton Center (massive shopping mall), Rogers Centre (Blu Jays’ baseball stadium/​concerts), Air Canada Centre (Toronto’s main concert venue), and countless good restaurants!
The rooms are very modern and comfortable. They are always exceptionally clean! They offer rooms with two double beds on the lower floors.
If you are staying with a larger group, I would recommend staying in one of the suites on the top floors. The view of Downtown Toronto is incredible! They have 2 – 3 separate rooms within the suite and a large bathroom with a shower and jacuzzi.
The hotel lobby is very pretty with comfortable lounging furniture and gorgeous crystal chandeliers. They have a nice bar and restaurant next to the lobby.
The staff is very professional and courteous. My only complaint is that they seem to be short staffed answering the phone. Other than that, our lodging experiences are always flawless!

Stayed here for business in July 2015. I loved the fact that the rooms were stylish with very modern décor. The bathroom was nice and bright with excellent lighting. Despite the good lighting, putting on makeup for the ladies may be difficult due to the small sink top area leaving minimal room to lay out your makeup and products. There was a kitchen area with many cupboards for storage. Bedroom had tasteful colourful décor. The beds are also super comfortable with a variety of pillows to choose from and a great supportive mattress– I had such great sleep!!:)
There was complimentary WiFi access for corporate members but this may not be the case for individuals.
Also loved that this was just right outside the King Street subway station and a short walk to the harbour front and Eaton Centre-​this hotel is right in the middle of downtown and the financial district so there is much to do nearby!
Cons would be that breakfast was not included and rates are a bit pricey.
Overall very nice hotel if you can afford :)

There were a lot of pluses to this hotel. Unfortunately, there were also some strong minuses. Let’s start with the good.
The Good:
Perfect location in downtown Toronto and walking distance to nightlife, business district, restaurants and overall activities. The rooms are all very spacious and come with a full kitchen. The rooms are also very modern and the vibe is quite trendy. A great place to stay for people of any demographic really. They also have a really cool bar in the lobby that attracts a happy hour crowd around 5pm.
The Bad:
I had to request a separate room because of the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke. It was to the point where I started wheezing a bit. Upon being moved to a separate room, I was again greeted with the smell of cigarette smoke. Though it was more subtle, it was still a strong scent. This took away from the stay as they clearly have an issue here that needs to be resolved.
Overall I really liked the hotel, but the smell issue really put a damper on things and will likely prevent me from staying here again. If it weren’t for that, this would be a great option for a hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, but there were a series of minor mishaps with our room that made our stay at One King West slightly unpleasant.
The room was very clean and modern looking, and we had a really lovely view. The bed was comfortable and the bath products were quite lovely. The hotel well situated right downtown, so you can walk everywhere very easily.
But…
There was an old candy bar in the freezer, which was kind of gross but I can understand how one can forget to check the freezer when cleaning up.
When I went to get the luggage rack out of the closet, the ironing board fell out and hit me. There really should be a holder for the ironing board on the wall (which is something that even a cheap hotel has).
There was an alarm set (I assume) by a prior guest that went off at six am! That really sucked.
The light switch by the bathroom that was not installed properly. This was the light for the bathroom, so is you went to turn off the light and you were just out of the shower, you could easily get zapped.
There was a weird water rushing sound from the bathroom that was loud and happened all through the night.
There was no shampoo in the bathroom when we got there (they brought some right after I called and asked for it).
When we checked out, we let the guy at the desk know and he said they just remodeled and that is not how they do things. He offered us free breakfast, but we were on our way out.
Would we stay there again? No. It’s too pricey for the fact that I got very little sleep on my honeymoon, and not for any fun reasons!

Don’t come here. Definitely don’t come here during their construction. The signs say they’re still open for business; but I’d have to disagree.
The staff was polite, but unaccomodating. Our room has windows that are covered up with tarps. No natural light and very clostraphobic. They wouldn’t move us to a different room either.
They offered breakfast vouchers which was nice. But funnily enough after calling the front desk twice about the vouchers they still didn’t give them to us eve though they said «well have someone come right up»
All in all this place is nice. Just not during th summer construction times. I won’t be back.

Just a warning that if you reserve through a third party they will place you in the «historic» section which translates to tarped up windows and consistent construction noises, including your very own personal 8am Saturday wake up call, courtesy of those hammering outside.
After requesting a room change, staff offered the SAME EXACT room on a floor below the one I was assigned to, with no other options for change. I practically had to hunt them down (by phone and then in person) to talk to them about it, which made the entire thing even worse. Had anyone at any point been genuinely invested in trying to find a solution, I think my rating would have been much higher.
The rooms actually have tremendous potential but this entire experience has left me wondering whether they should be renting these rooms at all. If you’re planning a nice relaxing trip, Avoid this place at all costs.

Pretty average. Nothing stands out as very bad, but nothing highly memorable either. For a 4 star rated hotel, I expected a little more lux. I choose this hotel as it is in very close proximity to the theater we were going to see a show at. I probably wouldn’t choose to stay here again, as the overall atmosphere just wasn’t for me. Very subdued, starkly decorated, seems more oriented to the business traveler than vacationer. Bar area very small considering the size of the hotel. Very loud heating/​cooling fan… almost like having a white noise machine. Overnight parking 40 CAN dollars! No free wi-​fi! Pros: Check in/​out both in a timely manner. I did like that my suite had a little fridge, sink, fridge… even a little cooktop area! Bed was very comfortable, room was nice and clean. Centrally located, walking or subway distance to lots of things.

When we entered our suite we found an empty beer bottle, a dirty ice bucket and lid, chocolate wrappers in the draw.
Don’t usually expect that from a luxury hotel. Specially when you open the door to wow your friends and everyone starts finding something.
Anyways one phone call the guy came up and took the bottle away.
Other than that I enjoyed my stay at the hotel.
Beautiful views. Professional staff. Fast transaction.
Slept like a newly born… what more can I ask for in a busy city? :)
