Cupcakes

2 stars on Unilocal = Meh. I’ve experienced better.
because I have. (Sprinkles, Dlish, The Cupcake Shoppe, etc).
I’ve been to every cupcakery in Toronto, and this is my 2^nd time there since they’ve opened. The first time I thought maybe it was just a bad batch… not so…
However… 10 out of 10 for company branding, build out of the location, image, Heather+Lori, TV show, friendly staff, etc.
but the product itself is not king (so to say).
The cake part, and frosting, just don’t go down well.
And what I noticed is that’s how they were ment to taste (as this was not just a 1 time taste test).
But they’re still here after a few years so their doing something right.
I wouldn’t return but their pretty to look at!

I opted to split the chocolate caramel cupcake with a friend, and we were both impressed by it – it tasted fresh, with a soft, moist crumb and a good balance of frosting to caramel filling to cake. I wouldn’t recommend making a special trip out here, as the cupcake is on par with other good bakeries in the city, but if you’re in the area and craving sweets, this place seems like a good way to satisfy that craving.

I was in the area and ordered a cake and Cupcakes for our Christmas Party, of course I bought some for me again, I love this place

After reviewing the vibrant selections of cupcakes, I decided to go with «sweet sixteen» which is a vanilla cupcake topped with vanilla and strawberry buttercream. It looked the prettiest and I was told that it was their featured cupcake.
The lady put the cupcake in a cute box and it came out to $ 4. I drove home and split the cupcake for me and my kids to eat. My initial reaction was ewwwww. The frosting was gross. Tasted like artificial butter sweetened up. Cake was good but not amazing. Kids thought it was horrible too. We ended up eating the cake part and leaving out most of the frosting.
Not only did the cupcake taste bad but it was super expensive. I’m glad I only bought one. Believe it or not, I have had a worse cupcake but this was definitely below average. I don’t understand how this place is still in business.

I love the cupcakes from this store. Went for my birthday and they were so delicious.

Delish! Fresh, fresh, fresh! Not frozen! Ordered 12 mini assorted — and best, best, best. My new go to place for cupcakes and cakes. Beats the competition!
Keep making them fresh!

After taking my daughter to a birthday party nearby, I decided to give this place a second chance, having heard of new franchise ownership. A year ago, I was excited to try what I had seen on episodes of the «Cupcake Girls», but was put off by the ’ I couldn’t care less that you are a customer’ attitude of the staff who served me and the too sweet icing and almost stale bland cake of each of the half dozen cupcakes I bought. Alas, I left very disappointed.
Today, I tried two, Chocolate and Blue Hawaii. A notable a size difference between the two, the icing on both were again too sweet. The chocolate cake tasted freshly baked, but the cake was bland and stale like in the Blue Hawaii. Much friendlier service, however, the product is still sub standard and not worth the price. And, being the day before Mother’s Day, the selection was poor (their «signature» Red Velvet out of stock, as it was on my visit a year ago). I won’t be back.

I was at the grand opening for ‘Cupcakes’ today — there is a new owner. The store has a great vintage feel. I’d never tried a ‘Cupcakes’ cupcake before, but the mini Sweet Sixteen I had at the opening was really good — moist cupcake, icing not-​too-​sweet — I picked up a tray of mini-​cupcakes to take home (which was great, so I can try out all the flavours and pick my favourites!). Will be back again!

I’ve done my share of cupcake ‘tastings’ in North America, and these were one of the worst. ‘supermarket’ is what comes to mind. If you think these are at all good, I suggest you taste cupcakes from the likes of Georgetown cupcake, Baked and Wired, etc. Not too many have really impressed me in Toronto… I mean they’re cupcakes… high end ingredients are available to Canadians! For the fame they have, I expected much better. I went once and bought a large assortment and will not return.

Went twice because my daughters wanted to. But both times the cupcakes were wasted (picked at and left unfinished) so I actually went back third time the other day to try one for myself and now I see why they were wasted. Flavour was spot on but consistency in moisture of the cupcake was off and icing was way to thick and sweet. I guess the décor is cute or at least my daughters did, the first times I got an older rude lady and the third time a younger cute nice girl. Due to this and pricing I say go to Timmies instead.

I’m very familiar with this chain since I bring home a half-​dozen from one of their Vancouver locations quite regularly and I love their cupcakes. The Red Velvet cupcake (from their Vancouver stores) is the gold standard to which I hold all other Red Velvet cupcakes — so imagine my joy to discover they were opening a franchise in Toronto!
First off — the location is awkward to get too, so points off there (since I don’t drive and rely on transit). I think I’m spoiled by the Robson and Thurlow location in the heart of downtown Vancouver which is very convenient for me to get to when I’m there on business trips.
The staff were unfriendly, and their red velvet cupcakes were terribly disappointing. The cake was too soft (almost mushy). the frosting was too sweet and wasn’t quite dense enough. The sweetness of the frosting wasn’t helped that it was doused on top with a generous shake red sugar sprinkles.
Sadly, I won’t be coming back. I’ll stick to my infrequent visits to Vancouver to get my Cupcakes red velvet fix.

I did not care for these cupcakes. They felt more like muffins with a lot of icing on top. They were too big, making them awkward to eat, and defying the point of cupcakes, which is portion control. I went twice, but am unlikely to return.

Finally, a Heather & Lori franchise in Toronto!
I do agree with another poster that if there are more than 2 people in line, it does make for a confusing line up but there is usually someone there moving the line along briskly.
Individual cupcakes are bigger than average, and at $ 3.50 I think they are expensive but worth the price. These days, the value of a product is only part of the over all price. Because of the extensive branding and notoriety of the TV show, these cupcakes are always a huge hit everywhere I take them. Flavor is always consistent, the coconut flavors are particularly good.
I have also picked up a few mini-​packs, they are a bit more value in my opinion, especially if you are bringing these anywhere as the minis a the perfect size for sharing.

I have been waiting for months for this store to open up and didn’t even know that they were ‘famous’ until after my first purchase.
Firstly, both times I’ve been in the store the line has been really confusing and I feel like I’m budding as there isn’t much space and usually there is a line to the left of the door but you order to the right. A little bit of chaos
I bought a full size Carmella for my mom for her birthday and she said it was good, but I don’t think she has tried any other ones and at this price point of $ 3 something for one.
The second time I went, it was actually a Sunday morning around 10 and I was disappointed that they didn’t open until 12 which I think is really quite late. It’s not very convenient to stop there to pick up cupcakes for a bridal or baby shower etc.
The third time I went I purchased the assorted set of minis and brought them to my girlfriends to taste test. We were all very disappointed and not worth the calories. For each one I tried I would compare them to a supermarket one and to the high end ones that sell for the same price. The mini dozen was $ 14. The chocolate icing was tasteless and an unexpected blah consistency. The lemon one was ok. I do not plan on ever going back and would rather detour to the downtown core (PG’s) to pick up more quality ones that are worth the price.

Great marketing, not-​so-​great cupcakes. The store was done up cartoony-​cute (not my taste) and the packaging was pretty.
I bought a half dozen on Valentine’s day. The store was super busy and there was a line curling up inside. One girl was taking orders, while the remainder of the staff were running around; some were in the back decorating cupcakes, one was putting cupcakes out, one was folding boxes, and one was on cash.
Cupcake selection that day included chocolate/​chocolate, vanilla/​vanilla, red velvet (ew), caramel, chocolate/​mint, and MAYBE lemon… I can’t recall.
I thought the cupcakes would be great since they are so well-​known, but that was not the case. Out of my 6 cupcakes, I ate half of one, threw the other half out, and left the rest in my kitchen for anyone else to finish off. The next day, the remaining cupcakes were all picked at, but none had been finished entirely; they definitely were not worth the extra calories.
The chocolate cupcake was moist, I’ll admit, but very dense and the frosting was heavy and not at all fluffy. I dropped a piece of my cupcake on a kleenex and when I picked it back up, no part of the frosting stuck to the tissue at all… Hard, firm frosting, not at all light and airy.
The cupcakes are also overpriced. I’ve had cupcakes from other stores that are much better and much cheaper.

I think my husband and I have tried most of the cupcake stores within 10 km and liked this the least.
They charge WAY too much for their mini cupcakes that are one bite, not two bite. We both said, I don’t know how they’ll stay in business if they charge that much. There is a premium grocery store in the same shopping centre that offers better cupcakes —- YES, a grocery store does better than a place that specialized in cupcakes. Something’s wrong with this picture.
The buttercream lacked fluffiness, so it wasn’t that enjoyable. We got a Caramella cupcake and it was so so. We also got a 24 Carrot and a Diva chocolate cake one. The cream cheese icing on the 24 Carrot didn’t really taste like cream cheese. The chocolate cake was not moist and was not rich enough for this cocoa fanatic. I was bummed that the pink icing on top of the Diva was not raspberry — sort of misleading when not clearly labeled. I felt like an imposition to the young staff, so I didn’t feel comfortable asking about all the flavours that were not labeled.
I wouldn’t complain if I was given it, but I am since I paid for it. The decorations on the cupcakes were very amateur. A glob of sauce on top of a sloppy buttercream star for the Caramella? C’mon! They obviously have not seen what their plethora of competitors are doing to outshine them.
It is a very small store, so I felt clausterphobic. I’m far sighted, so I felt like I couldn’t step back far enough to view what was in the lower display case without squatting.
We didn’t realize this was a store from the Cupcake Girls’ TV Show until after we left.
The location is sort of hidden, but the entrance essentially faces Laird over by the burger place. Tons of free parking since it’s in a big shopping area.
I hope they step up their game because they’d be a welcome addition to that neighborhood that is growing.

Lovely little shop with two very friendly and helpful staff. Smells like an old-​fashioned bakery when you walk in the door.
If I had one complaint, it’s that they didn’t have a full selection available (hoping it’s due to them selling out and not that they hadn’t made them). My friend wanted Red Velvet, which was on the window sign. They were out — but they made one up special just for him. They made bonus points with me!
I ordered the Lemon Drop (nice and lemony, even in the frosting) and Raspberry Beret (Lemon with a squirt of Raspberry filling) to bring back to the office for sharing. Sooo good! The pretty packaging brought curiosity seekers to my desk all afternoon.
Another friend, on hearing our review, had to stop on the way home from work to pick up her own Lemon Drop and Raspberry Beret. I started a trend.

The cupcakes look beauiful but are average. The icing is almost cloyingly sweet and they are a slightly over baked. At 31.00 for a dozen i’m more inclined to pick up a dozen for 5.00 at the Longo’s.

Cupcakes are just lovely. Sweet, moist, mini-​cakes that pair deliciously with a hot cup of tea.
As far as cupcakes go, Cupcakes by Heather and Lori meet all expectations of what a good cupcake should be. Trying four different flavours (not all at once, too much cupcake is never a good thing), gave me an inkling of what this shop can offer. Consistently good flavours and moist batters without being cloyingly sweet and overbearing. 4 stars.
However, as with all cupcake shops in Toronto (and possibly all metropolises (metropoli?) in N. America), cupcake prices are always an area of contention for me. I just can’t justify shelling out $ 3.50 per confection on a regular basis in order to sate my sweet tooth and therefore, can’t justify a 5^th star. That pretty much goes for ANY cupcake shop, not just this one.
Oh, and the candy-​pop, bubble gum pink that swaths the storefront is definitely not to my liking.
Overall, tasty cupcakes… prices and colour scheme leaves much to be desired.

Heather & Lori finally opened their Toronto store ! Have no idea who they are? They are the two (obnoxiously annoying) best friends who started up a cupcake shop franchise in Van; they also have a show on the W network. Please don’t judge my television viewing — I only watch their show when there’s nothing else to watch at the gym.
The décor of the place is super cute — it’s all pink and you feel as if you’re in a cupcake wonderland. I had the Caramella ($ 3.50). Frosting was very sweet and the chocolate batter was okay. Staff are all new (obviously) so there’s a lot of enthusiasm. I had high expectations of these cupcakes … sadly, it was just a-​ok.
