I am not one for reviews, but I do have to say that The Rock deserves 5 stars. I have been going there for about 2 years now, and even though I do not consistently see the same stylist, I am always happy when I leave. I also like that each one gives me new ideas on how to style my hair. It’s appreciated.

The girl who did my hair was great, even going so far as to offer me a quote on what we were doing. She was friendly and did exactly what I wanted with my colour. I wasn’t impressed with her straightening job but was in a hurry so I figured I’d fix it at home. At the end, the quote for foils was $ 179 but somehow I was still charged $ 225. They claimed the rest was for blow drying and finishing but that should have been included. When I said I wasn’t happy with that part, my bill went down to $ 203 but I still have no idea how they got that number when all they did was color my hair. My sister in law had the same problem. She was charged even more for a full color! We both left there feeling sick about the experience. It feels like they’re just trying to squeeze money out of people. If the prices were up front, people wouldn’t leave feeling so ripped off. The girl who did my hair was awesome but the experience left me feeling sick, even the next day.

I was given a gift certificate for The Rock and was excited to use it for a cut and color. I had a senior stylist for the color and a junior stylist for the cut. The senior stylist seemed crusty and annoyed right off the bat. She made no attempt to converse except to ask me if I rented or had my own house in St. Albert. She quoted me $ 119 to $ 129 absolute max(her words). I wondered why my shoulder length hair was going to be $ 30-$ 40 over the minimum for color on the website($ 89) but thought I’m already here. The color turned out to be much darker than the sample I had picked(it was almost black, which is my normal hair color). For the cut, the stylist was quite friendly and sweet but my side swept bangs did not turn out anything like the pictures I had shown her. When I went to pay, the total came to $ 193. I asked the lady how much I was charged for the color and she responded $ 139. I told her that the stylist quoted max $ 129. She was reluctant to change the price stating that she probably had to use more color. When I wouldn’t accept, she finally went back to ask the stylist and she was like«oh yeah, charge her $ 129.» She made no attempt to apologize. I will never go to this place again… way overpriced for what you get, some stylists are not that friendly and I felt scammed!

Had a great experience today… very friendly staff who work together to ensure you have a relaxing visit. Saw Tricia for a haircut… she was sure to check what I was looking for and delivered a great look for me! the price was very reasonable at under $ 50 but will be more if you see a master stylist. I loved the scalp massage before my haircut too! They have some great Valentine’s Day offers if you are looking for a great gift… massages, facials, couples pedi(you can bring wine – they will supply glasses).

My gripe is that I was quoted a certain amount for hair colour; but was additionally charged a $ 15 «finishing fee», that was neither quoted nor discussed. I also did not appreciate my ‘intermediate’-level stylist I paid for rushing off to serve another customer, having another one finish off. Wreaks of unethical business practice and disrespect.

The Rock knows hair. I’ve been seeing Lisa at the Rock for the past 5 years, even though I’ve been living outside of St. Albert for most of that time(that’s how good they are here, folks). Though the outside of the building looks like a leftover set from a Flintstones live-action movie, the interior has a very open and relaxed feel and the ceiling looks like it’s plastered with icing. Seriously. Look up next time you’re there. It’ll kick your sweet tooth into high gear. The girls at the reception desk are friendly and offer you coffee/tea/the moon while you wait for your appointment. There are plenty of hair & beauty mags to leaf through for some last-minute inspiration. All salon services start with a free stress-relieving head & neck massage(as is custom with most Aveda salons). In my experience, the stylists have all been attentive, friendly, and efficient — and their work is excellent. They know how to cut hair in such a way that it not only looks gorgeous in the salon, but also after you wash it and even as it grows out. The prices are on the higher end of the scale(especially if you see a senior stylist), but considering the quality of the cut and the excellent service, the prices are very fair. I can’t personally vouch for the other services offered here(colour, facials, massages), but I did buy my mum a massage package for Mother’s Day a couple years ago and she loved it. I can’t say enough good things about this place — The Rock is solid.(Ha!)

I got my hair and makeup done here for my sister’s wedding in the summer. I received a lot of compliments! The hair stylist and makeup artist both listened to my concerns due to my sensitive skin. The only thing I found a bit odd was that they didn’t have any waterproof mascara. They do weddings all the time, it’s usually a safe bet to have some on hand because one never knows. Everyone in the bridal party looked amazing — especially my sister. They did some funky design with her hair incorporating the veil which looked really cool. They were great putting up with a bunch of excited women snapping photos and such. They generously offered coffee which I truly appreciated considering that I’m not a morning person and it was that time of day. I’d certainly recommend making an appointment because this is a busy spot.
