Finally came back after they finished their renovations. Although this place may be small, the quality and taste of the food here is just excellent. Their bento boxes are very well prepared and their sushi and sashimi are freshly prepared. I haven’t tried everything yet but I can say that nothing has disappointed me. You can also call in advance to place an order for take out and then pick up at their location, which helps to save some time. Keep in mind that it does get busy past 5 pm. Overall, I’d highly recommend for anyone who loves or is interested in trying Japanese cuisine.

Loved it! Tastes just like real Japanese food in Japan. Sushi melts in your mouth and the non side dishes are just like real kyuushoku but much better quality. Their sushi is better than guu and sushi house. Will definitely return.

I’ve been eating at this sushi joint for quite sometime and overall I’d say one of the better sushi places in Richmond. Staff is very friendly and the renovations have opened up the place and provide more seating. The competition in Richmond for good sushi is pretty high and I think this place is up there. Gets quite busy at times but I always seem to go back :)

If Takeya was closer, I’d never leave. This place is a great go to place for sushi and their sashimi is always fresh and delicious. The prices here are also super affordable. They recently just renovated and I love the new space — very«bamboo» inspired. It’s also a lot more open(they got rid of the strange walk way to the cash register) and have relocated where the take out orders happen near the front. Much more efficient for sure. Everything that I’ve tried here thus far has been great and the service is always top notch. On my last visit, I ended up getting their Japanese curry which comes to around 12 dollars a plate. The portion size is pretty huge and I ended up not even finishing some of my rice(which usually NEVER happens). They also give you a generous amount of katsu chicken(4 whole pieces). My only complaint here is that it is a bit too sweet for my liking and the curry itself is pretty standard. Aside from that though, pretty decent deal.

Tucked away in West Richmond is this adorable, delicious and authentic Japanese eatery. Serving mainly sushi, rice bowls and udon, this place does not do fusion and it is perfect that way! We ordered the bara charishi don, nabeyaki udon, takeya nigiri set, takeya agedashi tofu, ebi sui main and salmon ta ta roll(california roll with spicy salmon ontop) and i must say everything was great! The sushi rice in all the dishes were perfectly seasoned especially that charashi don, the agedashi tofu was unlike anything i’d ever had with fish and crab meat in it as well and the nabeyaki udon won my heart. Served in a hot pot bowl, filled with a light broth, chewy udon noodles and plentiful chicken, veggies and an egg, this was one of the best i’d had in a long time. The seared nigiri was also melt in your mouth amazing and again, rice was good. The roll was great too because of the minimal rice, delicious spicy topping and not overly mayo-ed crab meat. Amazing place with quick and kind service as well! Definitely a must try :)

Very decent for its pricing within the area! Friendly service in this small cozy restaurant. As a very picky sushi eater, I wouldn’t mind coming back to this little spot! Obviously cannot expect over the top quality with such pricing(average 12 – 20 dollars for lunch); however, I have had a long of disappointing experience trying neighbour-hood type sushi restaurants. Worth checking this place out! Fish was quite fresh and restaurant was accommodating with my MSG-free and gluten-free requests. I rated it a 3 since the soup noodle was quite disappointing, I have had better udon at the food court of Richmond centre. So maybe just order sushi to be safe :)

Used to come here all the time but had some bad rotten fishy sushi served to us. Which can happen I suppose, but when we sent it back the chef came out to tell us the sushi is fine. I found him to be standoffish and the waitress had the same attitude. Everyone of us tried the rotten item just in case and agreed that the fish had turned and had to spit it out on the plate. We also had to request it be removed from bill. No apology, disagreeing and arguing with the customer and finally not removing it from the bill equals us taking our business elsewhere. There’s plenty of sushi restaurants in Richmond. We now go to a sushi place near Garry Pt. and glad we made the switch. Much better quality of food and friendlier service.

Very busy little place inside a strip mall. A lot of people come here for take out but the place was full of those sitting down for a meal too. Food is average, but service is pretty good despite how busy they are. The waitresses always had smiles on their faces and never rush you. We had the toro sashimi– the pieces were not very thick, but still tasted ok Bento– lots of selections and came with a good variety of dishes– highly recommend! Udon/Unagi bowl– the udon was over cooked and the soup tasted like it came from a package. There was only 3 pieces of thin unagi on top of the rice. The picture in the menu definitely looked better than the real thing Come here if you want quick take out style/quality Japanese. But go somewhere if you expect real restaurant food.

Unassuming strip mall location of quite a lovely sushi place! I judge sushi venues on a few things — gomae, tuna quality and spicy sauce(I know, I know, true sushi lovers scoff at the latter — but I can’t help it, spicy is just so good). Takeya faired very well in all three departments, with my only comment being that the toro was a touch squishier than I’d prefer. Overall though — the sashimi was very fresh, and the offer of some alternative vegetarian rolls(like eggplant!) was a pleasent surprise. They are accommodating of larger groups(they happily pulled together 3 tables for us) — just make sure you come early to secure a spot, otherwise you’ll be waiting a while(we arrived at 11:45 on a Sunday for lunch and we got space for 6, but only 10 minutes later the place had a line up). On that note though — if you arrive and there’s a wait — it’s worth picking up a magazine from outside and passing the time.(Oh and if you are data limited, as was my USA friend — there happens to be free wifi from the Safeway next door).

Had the unagi don with curry rice combo and nigiri sushi combo. That is waaaaaaaaaay more than I initially thought but, it is always worth it. This place is busy on Friday nights on the plus side, the staff is super friendly. On the down side, they close kinda early.

Wonderful sushi– decent prices. Just took off a star because the atmosphere isn’t so great(I guess it’s what you would expect of strip mall sushi). Had a California roll(delicious) and some nigiri. The fish was fresh, the rice tasted great and in the right proportions. I thought the crab sunomono was a bit over priced considering they use such a small amount processed imitation crab. They also had lots of fusion rolls, like mango California. I will be coming back here for sure.

One of my regular go-to places when simple Japanese food is craved. Hard to believe I haven’t commented on this place sooner. As others have noted, the restaurant is very small and they do a brisk carry out business. I have never had a bad meal here and there have been dozens over the years. Everything is fresh, service is friendly and the prices are reasonable and unpretentious. They also do a great job on party trays. A gem of a place.

Just had lunch there with a friend. Both first timers. Prices are pretty good and portion sizes are decent. Service was friendly and prompt. Came to take our order quickly and the sushi came at a good pace given they were super busy over the lunch hour. Everything we ate was delicious and they have a huge menu with many interesting choices. Not much in the way of décor, but clean and casual. For certain, we will return for Japanese food served by Japanese people.
This is probably the most convenient place to pick up sushi if you live in the Seafair area of Richmond. It is a must if you are in a hurry and need something delicious now. Just be careful, if you come at the wrong time, there will be a bit of a wait for a table! The service is great. The staff are very attentive and go out of their way to bring anything needed. Everything is fresh and the food is worth the wait. It’s certainly better than most.

If my stomach were a bottomless pit in need of good quality food with fair prices, this is where I’d set up my tent to eat all day. I enjoy eating in and take out. For eating in, there’s several nicely spaced out tables(good for groups up to 4 – 5) and green tea is served freely. Also, the staff are super friendly, efficient and attentive. Take out is great because things are packed up nicely and I appreciate that they put the ginger and wasabi in little paper cups, that way it doesn’t contaminate my food(aka: I don’t like wasabi). Takeya Sushi can satisfy the cravings from the most Basic(teriyaki don, California roll, tempura, udon) to Intermediate(sashimi, chirashi don, Yaki udon, eggplant roll, takoyaki) to Unique(Kaki fry, Salmon pon, toro salmon, takoyaki roll, fish cake tempura). The list goes on but I think I should stop before I get the urge to go out again. Overall, I haven’t tasted anything bad at this location(knock on wood). Japanese craving? You’ll find me here with my new favourite of Bara Chirashi Don($ 7.95) and yet another new dish to devour — maybe their tako agedashi tofu! Note: I heard this is a sister restaurant of Ichiro as well. If it is, I agree. great stuff here too but on the less pricier side!
