Unfortunately sunway has changed ownership as of sept 2015. We are devastated. Onto new hunt for the best chicken nuggets now since sunway fails to satisfy us anymore! New chef is much poorer than the previous one unfortunately. If anyone knows where the original sunway owners have set up their new restaurant please let us know!

CASHONLY! We ordered three things. and everything was so so salty. I ordered seafood hotpot. The noodles were so oily, the soup was so salty. I could not even have a sip. We were so excited to have oyster pancake, but it was just bland… Service was very very nice though. The server was very nice and attentive. So two stars for the service.

Good taiwanese snack place but very small and horribly horrible parking lot. Really enjoyed the salty peppery chicken since it came out nice and crispy! And this is the place that made me fall in love with spicy wontons! :D

Very authentic Taiwanese food. Love the egg roll, popcorn chicken noodle soup and fried pork rice. If you don’t mind shrimp paste, the shrimp fried rice is also quite good. Their milk teas have very strong tea flavors. I usually order the milk tea with pudding.

Last meal in Vancouver. Where to go eat for a late Sunday dinner? Obviously, Richmond. I wanted sushi one last time but the sushi gods weren’t in our favour(Sushi Hachi was closed). We even tried to check out a friend’s recommendation for a HK style café food, Double Double Restaurant, but they were closed for their annual holiday(FYI — December 1 — 16 annually). That left us in a tricky situation — where to eat with the millions of restaurants surrounding us. Luckily, I spotted Sunway Restaurant. The way that the addresses are set up in this strip mall is bizarre. Three different addresses(4540, 4600 and 4660, something like that). Let’s just say we had a bit of trouble finding Sunway but we eventually found our way. The place is small, cramped and busy! We had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes but people, for the most part, eat their meals and go. No lingering here. In and out, ramen style. This might have been the first Taiwanese restaurant that I’ve been to. We tried to order a variety of items but I know we didn’t do it justice. Next time! That or a trip to Taiwan is in order. — Herbal lamb hot pot($ 9.95) — everyone was ordering a hot pot dish so obviously, we had to try one ourselves. We went with the herbal lamp hot pot and it was delicious. Hearty, spicy, definitely order one. Don’t let the size of the pot deceive you, there is an abundance of meat and vegetables to devour. — Taiwanese shrimp pancake($ 6.95) — this one was veeeeeery interesting. The pancake wasn’t what we were expecting. I guess I was envisioning something similar to a Korean style pancake but this one had an odd, gooey texture to it. An acquired, not for everyone taste. — Taiwanese wonton soup($ 6.50) — the wonton soup was simple but well-executed. Broth was flavourful without being too salty. Good amount of wontons and cabbage to give you some much needed veggie intake. — Taiwanese road side seafood fried noodle($ 9.50) — I haven’t been to Taiwan yet so I can’t compare it to the street food of Taiwan. But the fried noodles had a smooth, chewy texture to it. Again, a simple, tastes like home type of dish. — Lychee cold tea($ 3.25) — I thought I’d give one of their cold tea’s a try. The tea flavour is prominent, almost bitter with only hints of lychee. Sunway was a great way to end our trip on a high note. The prices are extremely reasonable, service is fast and the food is good. If you don’t know what to order, just take a peak at your neighbour’s table and get what they’re eating. Now I’m craving that hot pot baaaaaaaaad.

Great Taiwanese food. Quite authentic. Order the bag of Fried treat. Super awesome. It is literally like the Taiwanese night market. It’s worth going back for. Over and over again. They do get busy during peak hours. It is a popular place for the locals(Taiwanese)

I use to love this place. The food was okay priced but it was good. In all honestly it had quite an authentic taiwanese taste, and definitely beats all the bubble tea food places in richmond. HOWEVER, the reason why i gave them a one star was because today when I went there, their waitress/owner(not sure which one) was just sitting there clipping her NAILS away. I was sooo appalled… NEVER ever have I seen this at a restaurant, and I feel so gross and couldn’t eat anymore after seeing this. Wont come back again.

One of my quests have been to try to sample as many of the many Taiwanese restaurants in the Lower Mainland to find some of the best ones. Based on a number of positive reviews Unilocalers have made, I decided to check this place out. It’s a quant little restaurant decorated in a minimalist style. Arriving at around 1PM on a Saturday I was a bit worried that only two tables were occupied when the restaurant just across the way was packed. I ordered off their special menu and got the deep fried BBQ pork on rice with their free drink, lemon tea and a side order of chicken nuggets. Apparently the BBQ rice dish is popular according to the friendly waitress. My partner in crime ordered a combo meal that came with the 3 side dishes you normally get with many Taiwanese rice dishes. The verdict? Deep fried BBQ pork: Meh… too salty and nothing super special about it other than the pork pieces had some light batter coating. Lemon tea: Yuck! tasted like the instant powder type Popcorn chicken: Excellent! One of the better ones on town. Not too salty, crispy the outside, tender on the inside. An extra star just because of that. Combo meal: sorry don’t recall exactly what it was but it was a veggies mushroom like dish with a side of minced pork on rice. Again, I thought it was a bit salty. The bad: I think the prices are way too high compared to other similar restaurants. They charge an extra $ 1 for a bowl of rice. They charge extra for the three side dishes when others don’t. For the meal above, it ran me $ 30 with tips. If the prices were not so high, I might consider coming back if I’m dying for some good popcorn chicken or perhaps want to increase my sodium intake ;-) However, I think I’ll move on and continue my journeys to other Taiwanese adventures.

We love this place. It’s our go-to for TW food. The popcorn chicken is off the wall amazeballs! They are one of the few bbt places that have winter melon tea. This place brings me back to TW. They also have a stall at the Richmond night market. Quality is just as great.

I love almost all their food here, their popcorn chicken and fried tofu is off the hook. My server Leah is awesome she’s very friendly and always checking up on us to make sure if we need anything else or if we’re enjoying the food. 5 star to her

The reason they get a 5 star is because of the fried chicken nugget. If you are looking for the most authentic fried chicken nugget in Vancouver, here it is. It is miles ahead of any other BBT places I’ve tried including Pearl Castle, Bubble World, etc. It is a MUSTGET! If you came here, ate everything else but the fried chicken nugget, you will regret it. My mom hates eating at Taiwanese restaurants in Vancouver since she lives in Taiwan for 11 months out of 12, but even she admitted you have to go there to enjoy authentic Taiwanese friend chicken nugget. Other dishes that I would give 4+ stars for are basically anything that they recommend(except the oyster pancake…) The 3 dish combo for the marinated dish has been inconsistent over the past few visit, where it can be a 5 star when made well, or 3.5 stars. The marinate sauce is quite authentic too, and I love the rice sausage with the peanut in it just like how they make it in Taiwan. Stinky tofu was REALLY good too before they shrunk portions down. Now the tofu went from big square sizes to small square sizes and minimal veggies/sauces. 3 stars for small portion, 5 stars for original portion. I do not recommend ordering much of the stir fry dishes that do not come with rice as the value isn’t there and often times, there’s more sauce then the actual food. However, most of the snack dishes are more authentic.

This is a small Taiwanese noodle place located at Empire Centre. Overall, I like their food coz it’s tasty but NOTMSG. Popcorn chicken — Juicy, tender and tasty. Dead man’s coffin — Weird name! Creamy seafood soup in cube bread box. Spicy wonton — It’s traditional Taiwanese wonton which tiny wonton in chili oil. Fried rice omelette w/dried pork — the dish wasn’t huge but it’s sufficient. They’re not cheap but not expensive either. It’s good place for comfort food.

It’s hidden in the back of the Empire plaza, and a bit hard to find if you don’t read Chinese. The English part of «Sunway Restaurant» is in smaller lettering. I thought it was ok. I had the oyster pancake, stinky tofu, and rice. Service was a bit slow for me, partly because I came in just at the beginning of the evening dinner rush. I was surprised by the number of customers. This restaurant is definitely overshadowed by other places in the area such as Pearl Castle or cantonese noodle shops. The oyster pancake was reasonable for the price($ 6.95), but not especially delicious. The oysters were overcooked, probably because they weren’t that fresh, and the sauce didn’t taste quite tangy and sweet enough. They also used napa cabbage instead of taiwanese petchay, so it was missing a part of the aroma that I wanted. The stinky tofu was not the real super-smelly tofu. I honestly didn’t expect to get real stinky tofu, since otherwise, there would be no customers in the restaurant, and in any case, it’s basically illegal in taipei to sell real stinky tofu because of the smell. Other than that, it tasted pretty legit, with the side of pickled cabbage. I ordered rice separately for $ 1. Calrose, pretty good. I don’t know why people complain about having to order rice. It’s pretty standard at a lot of restaurants in asia. This combo meal thing with rice included is actually something I associate more with restaurants in Canada, and not really cheaper. Sunway is a lot of cheaper than I expected. Good place for a cheap, relatively quiet date, where you don’t want to be seen by too many people. lol

4.5 stars. Damn good Taiwanese deep-fried chicken without all the shady street stall aura surrounding it. I ordered the Three Flavors(or Spices?) Chicken. It didn’t come with rice so I had to add it for extra ~$ 1 or so. Wow it was so crunchy on the outside. Major deep-fried goodness! The inside was moist, juicy and fresh and that’s what really made me love it. Spiced quite well and I felt all those flavors burst as I bit into the chicken. My friends ordered some spicy fried rice and a Taiwanese-style beef noodle soup. Their dishes all smelled amazing too. My only beef with this place(unintentional pun) is that my dish didn’t come with rice. Make sure to check whether your dish comes with rice, or else it’s extra $$. Decent service, I didn’t expect any Ritz quality service. I’m hoping to come back and try out their other dishes.

Came here on the tip of a friend. Parking is available all over the strip mall. Unfortunately, the lot is frequently jammed up with crappy(*cough* Asian *cough*) drivers who like camping and clogging traffic when they think there’s a space. Can’t really help you here. The inside is pretty cozy, with some 12 tables. Service is pretty decent. So what’s good here? The salty pepper chicken. The batter is nice and fluffy, and they put in a left of basil. Texture-wise it’s one of the better ones for sure, but I felt the batter was missing some kick. It was more sweet than peppery. I also had a BBQ pork on rice. May I kindly remind you that this place is Taiwanese, not Cantonese. The dish was totally not what I expected. The pork chop was lightly breaded, and the rice was served with pickled cabbage, cilantro, and roasted peanuts. Not saying it’s bad, but it’s definitely different. The menu selection here is a bit lacking as well, as the whole place only has 20 or so dishes. With that said, the steady stream of customers speaks for itself.

This little restaurant is somewhat hard to find for some reason. There are all these bigger ones out there overshadowing it. But it’s not like this place is a hidden gem unjustly placed out of the view of the general public. Sunway claims to be a Taiwanese restaurant, but nothing they served me reminded me of Taiwan. In fact, if it weren’t for the staff, there would be very little here resembling anything Taiwanese. This place only accepts cash. The other thing about money to note here is that nothing on the menu is priced at more than nine dollars, at least from what I saw. So the first instinct here is to think that it’s so nice how cheap everything is if nothing exceeds nine dollars. Then the dishes come around and you notice how tiny they are. They’re really more like little trays; «dish» isn’t the right word here. Basically, what you’re getting is a bunch of snack foods being passed off as a meal. I don’t even really remember what I ordered here. Considering how uniform the prices were, I figured it wouldn’t make much of a difference in the end. And then the food came and it was just boring. Maybe it’s because I’m used to seeing large dishes and the size of these trays made the contents seem unappealing. But I never felt that the food here was special. The thing that I ate the most of here was probably these slices of beef dripping in salty oil; I kept eating that because nothing else was that attractive to the eye. Fish and peppers? Chicken and ginger? I’ve seen this stuff all before, and it was presented better. It’s not that anything here tasted bad. It’s just that it gave me a bland impression, and is actually kind of overpriced when you think about how little food you’re getting when you pay nine dollars for a dish. Sunway is by no means horrible, but you could easily find better restaurants in the area.

Small place, hidden location, and pretty good food, in a plethora of restaurants, and I still come back here for eats and treats. Empire Centre, the plaza that people usually do not come to, has a nice little bright white-walled Taiwanese restaurant that not only serves appetizer dishes, but some wholesome meals that will fill your stomach. Housed in the corner of this plaza, I would say it is pretty hidden, but due to the location, you will actually be able to find parking, unlike if this place was located on Alexandra Road. It’s a cute little place, with a nice bright décor which feels like a happy little place. The place probably seats about 20, so this place is small, but the menu is pretty extensive. A whole slew of Taiwanese appetizers, from deep fried tofu, to the popcorn style chicken that you know. The back of the menu has rice, noodle and hot pot dishes. I have to recommend the Taiwanese Deep Fried BBQ pork, this dish was just surprising to see on the menu, but it was like very surprising, a different twist to BBQ pork, and I would order it again. The popcorn chicken is not heavily battered(like other places) and not extremely dry, or salted, so you do not have to reach for a drink every other second due to thirst. Also during my other visits I have had the satay lamb fried noodle, and the herbal lamb hotpot, pretty good on both fronts. The food is solid here, with as much competition as there is in Richmond, it takes good food to survive, and this one, I think will pass the test and survive.

Mmm… a secret hidden Taiwanese place! A cute little Taiwanese place in a little strip mall. There are only eight tables or so, so be prepared for a wait on the weekends. We waited about 15 minutes before we were seated. This place is bright and clean, and very authentic. Their menu has lots of choices, with an extra emphasis on traditional Taiwanese stir frys and snacks. Hot pots, and a wide selection of fried rice and noodles are available. Also, there are unique items: baked egg dishes, special soups, and a lots of marinated dishes. Their noodle soups are handmade noodles. We got an order of the traditional beef noodles. These were delcious. Many slices of beef shank, a no MSG soup, and the noodles were soo good! Chewy, and just the right thickness. Also got their chicken nuggets, a dried pork egg roll with mayo, and oyster pancake. The nuggets came in this large portion which was well worth its money. Tender juicy pieces of chicken, with the basil leaves to add flavour. Delicious! The egg roll was also enjoyable, a layer of the dried pork, and egg, wrapped with a green onion pancake. Oyster pancake was also yum; it was cooked just like the one I had in Taiwan. A simple, clean place for authentic Taiwanese food. I’ll be back to try out the other dishes!
