I came to Aberdeen Mall to have tea with a girlfriend and we did some browsing in the mall. This was one of the stores that we visited. Warning that everything here is Chinese, there is nothing in English, however, they have a large selection of things. My GF is Chinese and she wanted to pick up some magazines for herself to read. I did find a Chinese magazine that had an article of Lana Del Rey. It was more of a fascination that made me want to get this, however, skipped since it was $$$ due to import fees.

Where there are hordes of Chinos, there is bound to be at least one SUP Bookstore. What may seem a bit confusing at first, SUP(#1) is no question/greeting, but rather the abbreviation for Sino United Publish(#2). In Chinese, its«San Lian Shu Dian» or «Sam Leen Shu Deem» but if you didn’t already know that, its likely the book selection isn’t for you. I note this because virtually all of their books are published in Chinese. Lots of materials that were never given an English Cliff Notes version(aka Chinese Literature) will be on full display here. Whether its a New York Times Best Seller translated into Chinese or a How To book on anything, it’s going to be available here. What do you do when you’re not exactly Chinese literate? First of all, you’d probably have to figure out why you’re there. Are you learning Chinese? Buying a gift for someone who does? Best ask an associate for some recommendations for a good read. And yes, ask one who speaks a reasonably good amount of English. The service has been good here, the crowds rarely flock here(#3) and the prices seem fair though a non-bookworm(aka me) has a hard time parting ways for any hardcover book for $ 50 unless its limited edition or includes an entire volume set. Audio books, here I come. _________ (#1) Personally, I like«Sup Bookstore(?)» much better. (#2) Publish.ers. Sometimes we like keep things shorter. I mean short. (#3) Does anyone read anymore?

A part of Aberdeen Centre, this bookstore seems to have it all in terms of Chinese books. Chinese teaching for Westerners, Chinese novels and magazines, tour books, and all sorts of things about Chinese culture(a book on Chinese stones and jewelry, for instance, was one I saw, with its own stonecarving tools that came with it!) that I would never expect a parallel of at, say, Chapters. I went and managed to find some Chinese books for the daughter of some of my friends. She just turned one so the books needed to be very basic, colorful and above all safe for babies. They actually had a few, which was really helpful. I bought all of them, a total of six books for $ 15! The guy at the front was very helpful and even gave me a 10% discount even though I didn’t realize that there was one. Very polite, he packed up everything and wished me Happy New Year in both Mandarin and English. I am very pleased with this store. I will definitely go here as my Chinese reading comprehension improves…

«Sup»… I think this bookstore is trying to pick me up? I can’t even read Chinese but I’m inclined to go in with that fresh name. I notice a good selection of asian magazines(how I wish I could read Japanese — love their quirky, unique and bright fashion). There’s a good variety of books from what I can gather. There was even a Chinese translation of the Steve Jobs book, camera dslr books, learn about photoshop book, and more. What I really enjoyed was in the middle of the store, a calligraphy section — brushes, ink, notebooks. I think if I knew how to read Chinese, I would have appreciated this store much more.

This is my favorite Chinese bookstore in the Richmond area! Lots of selection of a broad range of topics and even Chinese magazines. They have Cantonese and Mandarin books! Another major plus in my opinion is there huge selection of paint brushes for calligraphy! Also you cant help but love that name Sup Bookstore, it reminds me of the SC2 meme Sup Son’.

This place has a fairly good selection of books of the Asian origin if you know your language well. This is one of the few bookstores I’ve found outside of Asia that carries a lot of text-based book series versus manga or comic type books and they also carry a lot of informational books or reference type books in Asian languages that you wouldn’t find, say at Kinokuniya. I am surprised by this because this is pretty rare for an Asian bookstore which would usually consist of a lot of Asia culture type items like toys and stuffed animals as well as little trinklets here and there. Now onto the re-learning of Chinese …
