Used Unilocal to find them. They are located right on the corner of Lonsdale with ample street parking off of 20th St E. First impression was bright and clean. All staff greeted me upon entering. Prices seemed reasonable. Bathroom was very clean. Ordered the chicken don buri, along with a dynamite and California roll. Under $ 20. Portion size is average but delicious. Would return if in the neighborhood again.

Don’t really think this is a Japanese restaurant… everyone there is Korean, at least call it a Korean/Japanese restaurant, pictures looked good but totally different when arrived at table. Fish is farmed, some wild but please tell us, that’s ok if you like farmed fish, but at least know it’s not wild.

An attempt at a fancy Japanese restaurant that doesn’t quite live up to its prices. Some dishes are quite small(like spinach gomae), others are with a more modern twist(Agadashi tofu comes with three different sauces). Service was trying at times and slow given it was a full house when we were there. Worth trying once to see if they suit your tastes. Given how many Japanese restaurants there are in the Northshore, this one just didn’t happen to be one we liked.

Today my husband and I visited Tawara Sushi for the first time, and we had a great experience. I had a scallop carpaccio, which was just exquisite and fresh! And a Matcha tiramisú, very original! My husband had a beef udon and prawn tempura. He liked them both. I tried his tempura and loved it! The batter was light and crispy, the prawns were fresh and the sauce was exquisitely delicate and flavourful. As for the service, I found the waiter and waitresses were very friendly and courteous. The restaurant is spacious, with great light, and nicely decorated in wood. I will definitely go back soon, as I’m dying to try all the innovative dishes they have. I can’t wait to try not only the different salads and carpaccios, but also the original rolls with feta, prosciutto, and pesto, just to name a few.

Why did I come here. Well I Unilocaled it up and saw the high rating. This is a must try. The décor gives you a sense that this is a higher-end Japanese restaurant. Server very friendly. Menu are items are pretty standard. Dishes are not like huge. Prices are not extreme expensive. But I have to say I love their food. One of the best sushi places. I had the double prawn dynamite roll and wow so yummy and fresh. The Scallop capaccio was really fresh. Very unique the way they lay the food on the place. So its not just about taste but for looks as well. I like that! The unagi don was different then others I had. It had a strong BBQ taste and smell and not a strong unagi eel sauce taste. Interesting. Not to mention the salmon and spinach and crab meat is unique but not sure if its Japanese. This place is not busy. When we walked in there was one other table and that was it. Maybe because I dined in on a Wednesday. But again the block looks pretty quiet at night time.

Just okay… For Nigiri we had Tako, Ika, Saba, and Unagi. Sushi was fresh and temperature was good, however the rice crumbled and fell apart way too easily. I got excited when I saw Poke on the menu however that was short lived. Their spin on the popular Hawaiian dish didn’t bring back any blissful memories of marinated Ahi Tuna goodness. Their«Crunchy» roll and Prawn Tempura were great. Overall, it was decent sushi for the price point, but definately not the 4.5 stars it is rated here. Hamaei is still my go to place on the North Shore.

Just came here to have sushi with my family member for the first time. The fish was fresh, the décor here was very nice, and the service was really friendly(which gives me the extra push to wanna give it 2 stars). I definitely felt it was a okay place to go to if you wanted good service. But the reason why I’m giving this place 2 stars is because seriously, the food took waaaaayyyyyy too long to come out and it was waaaaaaayyyyyyy too expensive for what it is. I’ve ordered the tuna & sockeye salmon sashimi, Tuna Lover, and 2 servings of Calamari Salad. The entire thing costs about $ 52 after tip and tax. I’m sorry, but I’ve been to many sushi restaurants, and while a few of them have poorer qualities than theirs, but this place still doesn’t justify that cost, even if it seems«fresher» and them having friendly staff members. I mean, sure I appreciate the freshness, don’t get me wrong, but come on, $ 52? The portions wasn’t generous, by that I mean the costs was way too high for the portions(sushi dishes, not the calamari) they were serving. I’m not even being sarcastic here, it really was waaaaayyy too expensive. Not only that, but when we ordered the 2nd plate of calamari salad, it took between 25min to nearly a full half hour just to even get it out to us. When we ordered it, it was BEFORE9pm and most of the customers that came for dinner had already come and go, but here’s the thing, we came here a little after 7:30pm(which should still be the middle of dinner service) and they were almost empty. Like, at best, only 1⁄3 of the indoor tables were occupied by the customers, like it was that empty. So you could only imagine just how quiet it was when we ordered it again before 9. Ps. The reason why it took us that long to order that plate again is because it took them a long time to even bring us our original orders in the first place and we were still hungry after. Bottom line, I seriously tried giving this place a open mind, but in my opinion, I felt that they were a 2 or 3 star restaurant trying too hard to be more than what it is. Only come here if you got no where else to have your sushi.

I use Tawara for nice dinners, dinners with friends, takeout and everything in between. Such a great location, the second you walk in the door you see the beautiful wood work inside and are greeted by smiling faces and the occasional hi from one of the chefs. The atmosphere and charisma of the place gives it a 5star rating already. The experience doesn’t stop at the craftsmen ship of the building though. The food is truly mind blowing; with reasonable prices on absolutely everything(including drinks) it makes choosing only 2 – 3 rolls hard. I can guarantee that any of the more complicated rolls will astonish you. You can taste the fresh ingredients in every dish, making this location a must visit. For me the 5 star rating comes from the wonderful staff, delicious food and spontaneous environment. I wish them the best of luck with buissness, and hope everybody goes and tries Tawara sushi for themselves

Have no idea why this place has 5 stars. The sushi rolls were mediocre at best. The agadashi tofu 3 ways was a nice touch, but arrived on the cold side. Chicken teriyaki was average and small in portion compared to price. The only redeeming quality was the salmon sashimi which was fresh. The service was also good. But overall, nowhere near the current rating.

Surprisingly good, with easy street parking. We were driving around looking for a sushi place and spotted this one: it’s hard to miss with its electric cherry blossom trees outside. It looks prettier than I can make it sound lol. Anyway we didn’t want to spend too much on sushi and the nice décor made us fear that the sushi here would be expensive, but it wasn’t! It was such GOODVALUE, my favourite thing! The servers greeted us right away and sat us down. They came by to see if we had questions with the menu. This is not your typical asian or sushi dive, this was a Cactus club ambiance with sushi dive prices! Totally worth it especially since the servers are so attentive and actually swing by to see how your meal is going. I definitely think they’re smart in copying more Western restaurants as they differentiate themselves. Anyway, we ordered the tuna poke don which came with really soft and good portion of tuna poke on top of rice. We ordered our typical avocado and salmon roll, and chopped scallop roll — can’t go wrong with either and I like how they didn’t load a ton of rice on the rolls like other places. Their sashimi was presented beautifully, cut perfectly and was at a good temperature. Overall a great dining experience that surprised us both in terms of taste, service and PRICE!

Tonight was a very memorable experience. I had been looking for a new sushi place in North Vancouver for some time now. I was browsing through Unilocal and came across the rave reviews for this place. The name at the time struck me as very similar to a place my parents frequented in Surrey. Using Google Street View was of no help as it still had photos of what was previously in this restaurants location. Giving it a chance on my weekly dinner with my mother we set off up Lonsdale and sure enough, there it was. We walked in the door and a mans face behind the counter lit up with a huge smile. He called out my mothers name and another lady came out from around the corner doing the same. They asked how she was, how my father was. They were indeed the former owners of the establishment in Surrey. It was very heartwarming to see how much they remembered her, how genuinely they were happy to see her. That being said, what would all that be without some amazing food? The sushi was finely prepared and both me and my mothers meals were amazing. All of the dishes were beautiful behold as well. Perhaps I am gushing to much but it as simply an evening of incredible sushi, a warm atmosphere and the best service one could hope for.

We were introduced to Tawara by a family member who has been several times(she also used to live in Japan for a long time) and who is always on the hunt for great Japanese food! This is a really nice new restaurant for the North Shore. It can be hard to find good quality sushi options and Tawara is right up there! The restaurant itself is really nice. Wood everywhere for a fresh and modern feel. The seating is comfortable and the lighting is warm without being too dim to see what you’re eating or read the menus. To note, I didn’t do any of the ordering, but we tried a healthy selection of their menu items, from cooked to raw. Everything was well presented and the portions are very generous! …I hate to say almost too generous, but sometimes there was too little rice on the nigiri to complement the fish. They were very busy at it was a Friday night. There were 2 servers but maybe the long table of people came in unexpectedly(?) but it was very busy and we waited quite a while to pay our bill. Overall, can’t wait to come back on another occasion. Nice restaurant, good food and friendly servers and sushi chefs.

Spotted this beautiful new restaurant on North Shore yesterday. Serendipity! Ordered for To-go at 9:45 pm, not realizing that the restaurant will be closed at 10pm. Despite the late night order, everyone in the restaurant welcomed me with warm smile and made the best foods ever! Have you ever tasted all the different parts of tuna? If you haven’t, this is your turn to try out this amazing Tuna Lover! Taste is very clean and fresh, and each of tuna nigiri is full of flavours and exquisite! Especially, the torched tuna belly just melts in the mouth! Can’t stop using exclamation mark lol Didn’t expect too much about Agedashi Tofu since it is Take-out, because it tends to get soggy after some time. But, I just wanted some warm hearty food in cold rainy day, so I ordered it. Guess what? They were crispy as they could get even 15 min after being in the To-Go box! What about the three different sauces! Sweet & spicy all in one box! I could see the sushi chef, cooks, and the server in this restaurants have genuine passion for making people happy with their foods and services. I’ll definitely come back to try the foods on the spot next time!
