I remember going to Shaan Curry House a year or two ago and not remembering anything too special about the place but the reviews overall were quite positive so when I had a craving for some Indian food, I decided to try it again. Let’s just say I don’t agree with the majority. FOOD: NOTENOUGHSUBSTANCE I ordered the ‘butter chicken chawal’ on rice to go with a side of samosas. While the butter chicken plate looked like a decent size portion I was quickly disappointed as it was simply a thin layer of curry over, what was for me at least, dry tasteless rice. The butter chicken itself wasn’t that tasty either as there was no depth to the flavor that you usually get with Indian food. I did like the samosa I had however. PARKING: EASIERATTHEBACK The mall where the curry house sits is a weird location where you can park in front by driving up on the curve. Doing this isn’t ideal especially when it comes time to leave so it is much easier to just park at the back by driving in beside the Dick’s hamburger joint next door. —- For $ 10.75 for the butter chicken dish, due to it being probably 80% rice and not liking the butter chicken all that much either, I have to say I’ll pass on going back. For lunch, I think a better bet would be to go to an Indian lunch buffet of which there are a few in the area(Aahar on Churchill and Carling, or Little Indian Café much further away down Carling across from Coliseum movie theater are two that come to mind). Yes, it will be more money but likely a more satisfying experience as well.

So i ring up and ask for korma. Everyone knows what a korma is. I get there and ask if its a korma. «Yes this is a korma». Get to the car its not a korma. I walk in and tell them its not a korma. «No this is chicken curry, korma just means hot». Heres the Wikipedia meaning of korma: Korma(from Turkish kavurma), also spelled kormaa, qorma, khorma, or kurma, is a dish originating in Central Asia[1] consisting of meat or vegetables braised in a spiced sauce made with yogurt, cream, nut or seed paste.

I give two stars because of very small but nicely done space. Food is nowhere near authentic. Naan/roti looks like bought from ready to eat shops so does. Chicken curry is tangy and daal like someone who just started cooking mixed all legumes. Get a good cook please.

This is definantly one of my favorite halal restaurants in Ottawa. The prices are reasonable and the wait time is not too bad. I just love samosa’s and I love how they have a corresponding sweet sauce with it. Their food tastes unique and always spicey which I appreciate. I like their lamb, beef and chicken curry meals.

How could I have not known about this place? I had lunch at the restaurant today. One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time! I ate in the restaurant at one of the tables provided. There was a steady stream of people coming in for take out. I had the dinner for 1 combo, which works out to just over 16 bucks. This seems a bit pricey, that is until you see the portion size! Very good value. The amount would feed two light eaters(though I ate it all). So delicious! There are many more options for under 10 bucks, so don’t feel that you have to spend a ton. I had a nice conversation with the owner of the place. He was very friendly and rightfully proud of his restaurant. I’ll be back on a regular basis from now on!

Just got takeout from here. Got the Dinner for Two($ 25) and it was pretty good. The dinner comes with 2 vegetable samosas, your choice of chicken or beef curry(we got beef), your choice of vegetable or chickpea curry(we got vegetable), a lentil curry, rice, salad, 2 naan breads, chutney and 2 pieces of Gulab Jamun. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by the friendly man working behind the counter. He showed me the takeout menu and told me about their specials and gave me some recommendations. He was really nice. The food portions are not really huge, but the food is good. The beef curry had many chunks of beef and it was flavourful but mild(not too spicy). The vegetable curry had a nice medley of vegetables, it had potatoes, peas, and green beans. It was a little spicier than the beef curry. The lentil curry was the spiciest and it had a lot of different types of lentils in it. It also had kidney beans and mung beans and I think split yellow peas. It is the best lentil curry that I’ve ever had. Most lentil curries just have one or two types of lentils. This one had so much stuff in it. Plus it had a spicy kick to it. Awesome! The salad was mainly iceberg lettuce, so nothing special. The rice was plain white rice with some little seeds mixed in(fennel seeds?). The naan was ok. Wasn’t all blistery though. Samosas were good. They were filled with potato and peas. I was really happy that they let me substitute the fried samosas with baked samosas(they are the same price). As for the Gulab Jamun… well all Gulab Jamuns taste like soggy Timbits to me, so I am not a good judge of this dessert :( All in all, good food for a good price(at least by Ottawa standards — for $ 25 I could easily get 3 times as much food in Scarborough or Markham, but that’s a different story). Now don’t be intimidated by the parking situation. You do not have to park in front of the store and then gingerly back your car up into oncoming traffic on Merivale to get out(although there are spots there for the brave)! There is a parking lot out behind the store for customers of the strip mall. If you are going northbound on Merivale, there’s an alleyway before the strip mall leading to the back parking lot. If you miss that turn you can also turn right before the Dick’s Dairy Dip, it will lead you to the same parking lot.

Great curry. The best chickpea curry in Ottawa. We go there once every week when the weather is fine, daily special is a good deal. Love their fish, lamb & veggie curry. The chai is just not my cup of tea. A nice take out place, not many seats for dining in. Too bad that they don’t deliver.

This place is less than a mile away from my house however it is in a small strip mall that I pass at least twice a week. If not for Unilocal I would have never ventured inside. Based on the profile there was no take out no website no nuttin’…so my spouse changed out of her sweats and off went. The place is small and quaint, nice and clean(did not check the toilets). The place appeared to be family run and very friendly. There are no more than 7 tables. Regardless of the wardrobe change we decided to take the food home and eat. The order was vegetable curry, chicken curry and lamb curry. Rice, Nan bread and 4(2 baked vegetable, 2 fried spinach and tofu) samosas. The total with tax was $ 26.00. The food was very good and we almost ate all of it, quite a feat. Special shout out to the spinach and tofu samosa. The curries were tasty and not to be spicy but just enough, I am sure we could have ordered a hotter one. The Nan was not what I am accustomed to, more like the variety we purchase at the grocery… still good but not Indian restaurant quality. Already we plan to return soon and will not order as much, but order different as the menu is quite extensive.

Great place… love the daily specials. I used to go weekly to them but after they raised their prices I haven’t been back as often. Would like to see a few more specials/take out deals. PS. parking is nuts but not too bad if you ease it over the curb/sidewalk, just look out for walkers and bikes.

This is definitely my favorite curry place while I was working in Ottawa. Super fresh daily made curry. Went there for a couple years. The only regret is that their hour is very short. But the food is so wonderfully delicious! Even years after we left Ottawa, from time to time my wife and I still talk about it.

I used to eat here every day for 2 years when I was working in Ottawa. Really small place, smaller menu, but great Indian food which was always fresh and hot. If you are in Ottawa, skip all the fancy Indian restaurants and drive down to this place, you’ll love it!

I love Indian food. LOVE it! And, my wife and I are always on the lookout for a new Indian place to try out. Well, one day, while shopping along Merivale, we ran across Shaan Curry House. It is a tiny place in a small strip plaza, but what a find! First — the owner is an Indian guy in a turban, not some Canadian highschool kid. Good sign. Second, the menu offers a wide variety of well-priced Indian delights. They have samosas(but no cheese samosas — where can you find them in Ottawa???), vegetarian curries, chawals, fish or meat entrees, kebabs, etc. You can even get combo deals to put your favourites on one plate. For Indian food(which can get spendy at other places) the prices are really reasonable — nothing over $ 10. That is unbelievable! And, if price is a factor for you, they do have daily specials. If you like Indian, you have to try Shaan.

This place is fantastic. Excellent curry in a hurry. A warm hearted Sikh man runs the place, and the food is always good. Tonight I picked up chicken curry takeout and good thing I called ahead, because by the time I got there he was out of curry, and out of rice. it’s just that kind of place.
