Is it fair to say that Target’s expansion into Canada has been a pretty big letdown? Oh wait, I’m not the only one saying that? It’s everyone? Oh, okay. I’ll just reiterate then. By no means is it terrible and it’s certainly much better than what it replaced(Zellers) but it definitely doesn’t live up to the massive hype. The prices are decent although of course nowhere near in line with what you’d pay south of the border. I can forgive that. Retail economics aren’t that simple. They have some neat products and I’ve picked up a few things that I stumble upon and have been happy enough with the product and the deal. But just as often I’ve been disappointed or stymied. The last time I went in looking for four items(I believe) and was successful in getting one. Not great. And I have this nagging feeling that had I checked out Walmart on the other side of the mall, I might have had a better batting average(and possibly saved a couple of bucks). It is what it is. A decent discount retailer that occasionally makes me happy with the things I pick up and sometimes(probably more often than not) leaves me frustrated. I’ll give them a marginal pass because of the unfair expectations, customer service that is a notch above Walmart’s and a generally clean, well laid out store. But you guys are going to have to step up your game if you want to keep me interested… don’t become Zellers, seriously.

I go their frequently and I had to return something back as the product didn’t do what it was suppose. The money back guarantee was intact so I call the company and they said to return it to the store where it was purchase. I went to target and firstly they couldn’t find out how they should return it and then after chasing few people at the counter they were able to figure out the return. Then they didn’t give us the full return amount stating that we got a gift card of $ 10 with this purchase. Freaking the purchase was $ 12 and my total bill was $ 100… their Math didn’t work as they were giving these gift card on any $ 50 purchases. The final lady was quite rude when serving us and continuously argued till the end. I am not worried about the loose change but it was more of the service. I felt like the second return person was fight and continuously arguing very different from the original person who could figure out the return.

First visit to Target last week. Not bad. Very organized, bright. Prices pretty much same as Walmart but I think it will be a good ground for competition:) there are some unique things but I found areas where they lack variety and choices. Maybe coz still stocking up on things. Overall opinion is good though:)

My ex girlfriend used to love going shopping at Target in the US because they had so many cute little things and I have to confess, there was some neat stuff there. The Target at Square One? There was a huge buzz about it coming to Canada but it’s been a bit of a letdown. I actually have a feeling Target will be out of Canada in the next 5 – 6 years if they don’t improve their marketing, pricing and variety. Their clothes look okay, but they have limited groceries and everything else is the same price as Walmart. The problem with the Canadian Target is that their prices are higher than US prices, have less variety and are trying to force their US retail strategy onto Canadian without any modifications to their business model and that usually doesn’t work in Canada(e.g. Krispy Kreme, note: Walmart adjusted their strategy by catering to culturally specific holidays and noting that Canadians respect multiculturalism). I still go to Target, and the only reason is because lines are too long at Wal-mart.
