It’s the age old story — you make a few calls, and you hire the movers that give you the lowest price. But sometimes cheap can be expensive, and that’s the case with Maple Leaf Movers. They’ll send you bumbling, lazy guys who will bang your furniture around. I only had them move a bedroom set, but it was a mid-century modern teak bedroom set; a bed that comes apart into a bunch of boards; a long(3×3 drawers) dresser, and a taller chest with two doors. They didn’t wrap any of the pieces. They didn’t strap the tall chest, so the doors flapped around as they carried it. They banged into every doorway they went through. Several times I asked them to please be careful, but they dismissed my concerns and told me not to worry, they knew what they were doing. I assumed they would wrap the furniture once they got it to the truck, and it’s my fault I didn’t follow them downstairs and LOOK into the truck for myself before they drove away. But I didn’t, and I ended up paying for it. At the other end, I was there when they opened the truck, and when I saw that not only hadn’t they wrapped my furniture, but they didn’t even strap it down, I got that horrible feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you know something bad is about to happen. But then I went up to my door and opened it, and they started carrying the pieces in. I was more worried about them banging my new condo walls then I was about the furniture at that point, so I didn’t notice the problem until they were almost finished. The tall cabinet had a big chip out of the side, about the size of a credit card. I noticed it as soon as they put the piece down in my bedroom, and I pointed it out to them. «Oh,» they said, «That was probably there before.» «NO, ITWASN’T!!!» So we went back down to the truck and guess what I found? The chip, there on the floor of the truck. There was no more denying it. I asked them, well, what are you going to do about this? They shrugged their shoulders. I demanded they call their boss and tell him what had happened. There ensued about half an hour of delays and arguing, during which time the two movers refused to move the last piece.(That was a half hour delay I then had to pay them for, because a half hour costs an hour in moving terms.) The boss’s name was Dave. Dave offered me a 10% discount. I said I don’t want a discount of $ 40! I want you to fix my dresser, or pay to have it fixed! When a piece of wood gets chipped off like that, it’s like a car getting dented — that whole side will need to be refinished, and that’ll cost about $ 300 — not including the cost of delivering the piece to whoever is going to fix it, and returning it. Dave told me he had a guy who would come and fix it. He told me to call him the next week, and he’d send that guy. But in the meantime I had to pay for the move. So the lazy moron movers carried the last piece up into my place, and I paid them $ 390.36. The next week I called Dave, and I bet you can guess the rest. Dave wasn’t in. Dave would call me back. Once or twice during the next four months I actually managed to catch Dave on the phone, and he promised his repair guy would call me the next day. Nothing happened. This went on for months and months until, well, he wore me down. I gave up. And then I forgot about it. Except that every time I go into my bedroom, I see the big hole on the side of my dresser. So now I’m trying to decide whether to take them to small claims court, or to just have the dresser fixed myself. But in the meantime, people, don’t hire Maple Leaf Movers!
