Xscaper Arts

Our group of 3 wanted to give this place a try and played The Lab. Having been to other escape establishments, we felt Xscaper Arts lacked in comparison and there were many areas that can be refined (at least for The Lab… not sure about their other 2 rooms). First, there was no direction given as to where to even begin in the room. Second, one of the «tech» elements (using «tech» here very loosely) failed on us, causing issues with revealing the next clue. Third, the walkie-​talkie transmission was extremely poor and made it very hard to hear what they were saying which wasted time — we nvr experienced this much difficulty with walkies at other escape places! Fourth, we were disappointed by the overall lack of tech used in The Lab — we were only confined to one small room, no hidden doors, nothing moved, nothing wowed us. Although, we did enjoy the spookiness of this room. For $ 17, The Lab failed to impress… $ 12 would’ve been more reasonable relative to the quality of this room.

We did The Lab at the Markham location. The place is located in the basement of what looks like a church. While the staff were very friendly, we were pretty disappointed with The Lab. It is a single and very small room. The puzzles seemed very random and the décor was lacking polish. There was one part that did give us a good scare, but other than that the room was not very impressive. I heard good things about their inception room but after this experience, I don’t think I will be motivated enough to try it.

was eating at a Mexican restaurant across the street and happened to come upon Xscaper Arts while heading to parking lot. the Room we tried was LAB.

We were given a two way radio incase we needed clues. The room did scare me at times… the instructions given by the staff to start the ‘mission’ was not very clear. there were 3 parts to the quest and you have to solve them in order before you can get out of the room in the allotted time. there wasn’t to much interaction with the environment (pulling of levers to reveal clues etc.) felt like we were doing math homework because thats all it really was…
The 3 parts did not tie in smoothly together so we were not sure if we did the steps correct or not (in my opinion I think there should be clear indications so we can proceed to next step) once we radioed staff and they told us we were correct then we proceeded. with 1 minute to spare we figured out the code to unlock the main doors but the door did not open so we thought our code was wrong. by that time the 45 mins was up a loud alarm went off (i guess to let staff know we sucked). the staff came to get us and asked us how we enjoyed the experience. We asked them if the code to unlock the door was **** and they said yes (so why didnt the door open?). So we were kind of annoyed because the puzzles themselves were pretty easy to solve but the flow between tasks were not very clear.
over all it was ok. seems like they spent all their money on the main room (entrapment) and bare bones on the other rooms props were meh… I probably won’t be comming back

Xscaper Arts currently has four rooms that are relatively small. Similar to Prison Breakers, you may feel cramped if you do attempt the rooms with a large group. Like all the other locations, you will be briefed with the story to align with the theme of the room.
At Xscaper we did two rooms: The Lab and Entrapment. Without spoiling too much, The Lab Room was by far the most scary — I’m not even exaggerating. There are a couple of scares in the room that really get you! On the website, they indicate a scary level of 90% and it is accurate. Unlike other escape locations that focus on small steps and puzzles, Xscaper focuses on one or two big puzzles and a bombardment of clues that need to be tied together. We did not like this set up as we prefer many small puzzles that lead up to the exit of the room.
One cool feature of Xscaper is that the rooms are technologically driven and fully automatic. Pushing buttons, turning on switches, and such will automatically activate other areas of the room. The Entrapment room utilizes lasers as part of the puzzle which was a fun and interactive experience! But as more escape games pop up across Toronto, the technological aspect becomes more common so this was not anything we’ve never seen.
It is not for price-​sensitive customers as they charge $ 34 per person. We would recommend doing Entrapment over The Lab but we probably won’t be returning.

The Lab — Scary. I hate horror movies and I get spooked quite easily so when I went into the room, I immediately wanted to leave but I sucked it up and played the game. I won’t include anymore details as it would spoil it for everyone who reads this.
Entrapment — Pretty cool lasers but I was the only one who could get through the lasers as my counterparts were incapacitated (again don’t want to spoil it). So I think I was the only one who actually enjoyed the «coolness» of this room. I have to say though, It was pretty cool feeling like I was in some mission impossible scene.
Overall, Xscaper arts is like the other escape room games. Perhaps slightly more high end as they use magnets and had some cool gadgetry. A bit expensive at $ 25 per person — I think if you like them on facebook before 7pm you get 40% off (I’m not 100% sure though as I went after 7pm). Also they could work on their advertising /​signage. I’m on Main St Unionville every week for work and I didn’t even know it was there until my friend recommended it. I gave it 3 stars because I was spooked and probably won’t go again.
