The Biscuit Eater Cafe and Bookstore

Dropped in for lunch and was delightfully surprised to discover Phở soup and another Asian dish on the specials board. It was delicious, and beautifully seasoned. I was expecting a good soup and sandwich for lunch (which I could have had) as I was unaware of the change in ownership, but the lunch I had was so much better than just a sandwich. We also purchased a lovely loaf of sweet potato bread to take home. I will have to travel to Mahone Bay much more frequently now to partake of their delicious food.

Service is poor since new management. When I say poor it is far to slow. They are so polite and friendly you can’t get upset just plan to spend a few extra minutes even if just getting a latte to go

What a great little café. It recently changed hands, as the other reviewers have noted, and some things have improved and some changes have made it less attractive to me.
It’s the same ambience, only tidier :) The used books for sale, always delightful, have been weeded and whoever has chosen the ones that have stayed has a really great eye for the sort of stock that’s most appropriate for this kind of book store/​café. I do miss the clutter a bit though, it was so cosy!
I really miss the sandwiches, which were utterly and divinely delicious! Where is my Yodelling Boar? (Ham and melted Swiss with mustard and mayo on a croissant :))
The hot drinks are still great, although I’m not sure if they still have homemade marshmallows, which made the hot chocolate so decadent. Can’t wait to find out, though!
One of the big improvements is the opening hours which seem a little more consistent. For a while there The Biscuit Eater always seemed to be closed when I was in Mahone Bay and in the mood for a tea and nibble.
The deck is gorgeous, a wonderful spot to read a book, share a coffee with friends and enjoy the sunshine.
Finally, the last time I was in there they had run out of biscuits. At 11 in the morning. Bad luck, bad management? Who knows. I hope they’re every bit as delicious as they were under the old owners, because they were AMAZING.

The Biscuit Eater Café is simply sublime… everything I imagine a good café to be: intimate, friendly, teeming with interesting people, music, events… and a backyard patio!
The old Biscuit Eaters was wonderful but the new owners have kicked it up a notch, with inviting, warm décor and even more delicious, ever-​changing treats, based on seasonal goodies.
A real gem of Mahone Bay.

The Biscuit Eater has always been my safe haven.
The café is under new ownership but they haven’t let things go down hill or change too much.
I’m glad to see the friendly faces behind the counter area familiar ones.
The Biscuit Eater is slightly hidden in Mahone Bay. You have to know what you are looking for to find it. During the summer tourist crazes I love that about this spot.
The warm paint, art choices, aroma of coffee and used books will comfort you as you step inside. Their coffee/​tea choices are plenty and everything is good. They always have lovely pastry choices and soups on hand.
I love being surrounded by tons and tons of used books. you can hide away amongst them or sit at tables in the café area. Or if it is lovely out you can enjoy a seat out on the patio.
Bottom line you’ll feel and be nourished.

Only a four star review because they recently changed management and did away with the (fabulous) sandwiches. They maintained all the coffees, teas, desserts, and daily soup, but it’s no longer much of a lunch destination.
Still, it’s a wonderful, independent café, where you can sip excellent lattes while surrounded by books. Our family favourites are the swamp donkey (latte with maple syrup), the kafka cookie (a chocolate shortbread that could use a bit of salt), and the sweet sassy molassy (ginger cookie). The desserts are made in-​house. The coffee is roasted by a company in Bridgewater, but the Biscuit Eater sells bags of beans.
The staff are delightful. Most of them have been working there for years, recognise customers, and know their usual orders.
The patio is in the backyard, making for a protected oasis that gets lots of sun.
Oh, and they sell books! They have both used books and a nice selection of new books from local authors/​publishers.
