Beautiful beautiful park. I’ve never been to a park on a massive hill. The big gates surrounding the park and so regal and beautiful. There’s one particular part of the park by a gazebo where you can see a beautiful view of the harbour. Dogs can be off leash which is nice but just a heads up if you don’t like dogs. It’s only in a certain part.

One of my favourite parts about living in the HRM are all the gorgeous nature spots and parks to go to. Dartmouth Commons is a beautiful park downtown Dartmouth. The gardens and trees are beautiful and it’s a relaxing spot to visit.

This really is one of the city’s most striking outdoor public spaces, made even better by the fact that no one ever seems to remember that it’s there. Next time that you’re stuck in bridge traffic, dreading having to cross the harbour in either direction, or just popping in to grab a happy croissant at Two If By Sea, do yourself a favour: pull over, nab one of the plentiful parking spots in downtown Dartmouth, and stroll through the Dartmouth Common. With charming trails winding through different areas ranging from flower gardens to vegetable patches, forested areas, to big open fields, the ways you can enjoy this space are just about limitless. Off-leash rules are great for playing catch with the dogs, a baseball diamond is perfect for rallying your friends for some competition, and the general beauty of the area(not even counting the spectacular view of Halifax) lets you really get away from it all without ever having to go very far.

The Dartmouth Common is a greatly under-appreciated jewel in this city. This deceptively large park has many features: a garden, a baseball diamond, walking trails, an off-leash dog area, a gazebo and a community garden. The Leighton Dillman Scenic Garden is the entrance off Alderney Drive and I often see wedding photo shoots. And I can see why; when everything’s in bloom, it’s amazingly beautiful. There are lots of open areas to lie down and enjoy the summer sun. If you’re more active, you can jog around. In the winter? There’s lots of downhill sliding going on and building of snow forts.

THEDARTMOUTHCOMMONISBEAUTIFUL! Everything is in full bloom right now. The trees are lush and impressive, the flowers are splashy and fragrant, while the lawns are soft and perfect for stretching out. Biking into the common a couple of days ago, and up the relatively steep hillside brought me back to memories of Italy, traversing lofty hill sides in the Riviera. The plant life is so lush and perfumy, with birds chirping and bees buzzing, that I couldn’t believe such a treasure exists that I’d scarcely been to in this city that I know so well. The park was quiet, with the odd pedestrian walking through, so Andrew and I sat on a bench and marveled at the magnificent view of the harbour and downtown Halifax. The sky was rich azure, the wind balmy and the company perfect. We sat for about an hour and chatted, while we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery, accompanied by a sweet little gazebo. I implore you to go and picnic in this wonderful Dartmouth park! It’s about 300 acres of hillside, open to the public since the 1700s. Go enjoy Dartmouth’s flourishing downtown scene, and walk through this lush garden park while you’re at it.
