This is not a hidden gem, though it is relatively hidden. It need not be – having the basics of a good night’s stay for relatively short money in this well-touristed city. The one bed room I stayed in had a moderately comfortable bed(with absurdly large, hard pillows that I could not use). The windows were new, easy to slide open, and covered with old but functional black-out drapes. The carpet was old, though free of debris, the drawers, desk, night stand, and chair seemed like they were early 20th century leftovers from a garage sale; though the room also came equipped with a flat screen TV, air conditioner, microwave and mini refrigerator. The bathroom and shower were modern and very clean. There was a perfectly good, though not fancy Continental breakfast, neatly presented, in a clean old moderately well lit room — in some remote corner of this oddly configured building. The fruit salad tasted fine, though I suspect it came from a jar. The cereals were fresh; the hot water for tea, hot; the coffee slightly better than what you find in gas stations these days, and there was a TV with news and a bunch of touristy books in a separate room. On your honeymoon in Nova Scotia? Don’t stay here. Traveling around the province on a budget? A good find.

The Commons Inn is located along Agricola and West street. It is a very convenient location. Just a short walk and you are at the Halifax Commons, or maybe stroll up Agricola St to grab a coffee. You are no far from Citadel Hill or downtown. For this reason a lot of tourists like this spot. In the summer you can take advantage of the roof top patio’s to sip on a cold beverage. I have not personally stayed here, but did go there when some friends were in town. They liked the service and the fact it came with parking and breakfast. I found the interior a little dated. But if you were to look at the exterior of the Inn, it is done in a Victorian Style. So having modern furniture just would not suit the interior design. It is fairly inexpensive, around $ 90.00 per night, but that is location, parking and breakfast.
