At time of writing, Hobo Piez is the top rated restaurant on that other review site(the«journey consultant» one). I was skeptical… how could a place with the Hobo Piez be the BEST restaurant in Grand Bend? After eating a Hobo Pie here, I’m no longer a skeptic. What are hobo pies, you ask? I’m not sure. But what they sell here are basically big sweet empanadas, stuffed with your choice of filling, deep fried, and dusted in sugar and a drizzle of icing. Sugar bomb? Absolutely. Worth it as a vacation treat? You bet! I tried the chocolate peanut butter pie(about $ 5 or $ 6), which tasted like a Resse’s peanut butter cup that had been surrounded by a flaky pastry crust. It was a decent size, and for just $ 1.50 you can add a scoop of ice cream on the side. They have Moosetracks ice cream — the best! And the bonus scoop is quite generous. The pies are made from scratch to order, and the guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful. Warning for those with food allergies: we asked if the ice cream had a separate scoop to avoid gluten contamination for my sister. The guy said they didn’t have a designated scoop. .. that they had one before, but it broke after they used it twice.(What? How does an ice cream scoop break?) So if you have a gluten allergy, peanut allergy, etc., you might not be able to eat here.
