Moonshine Doughnuts

I pass by this booth all the time and finally decided to purchase 1 box (4 for $ 10). I really wanted to like these doughnuts but found them bland and a little on the dry side. They bake these the night before and the morning of, so there is no way to know whether you’re getting a «fresh» batch. I think it’s great they are trying to be creative with their flavour combinations, but the flavours are too subtle to be impressed.

Overpriced and overrated, I’m afraid. And, no, I’m not the kind of person who thinks that anything prepared by Tim Hortons is good. Edmonton is a doughnut graveyard. I’d pass on these doughnuts if I were you.

Yum Yum! Honestly that sums every bite into a yum experience. I purchased a. box of four today at the market and took them home. The minute I out the box on the counter it was opened. The eye candy did the trick. I live alone and have no life and I enjoy simple pleasures such as these gourmet delights. I took a bite out of each one of them and revealed in the surprises of flavours.

My favourite doughnuts. Nothing else can compare. Baked. Vegan. Flavour combinations** are unique, creative and exquisite, served up gorgeously decorated. Seriously so pretty, it pains me to disrupt the icing with my teeth. Toppings can range from a simple drizzle to the complex and surprising. I don’t even remotely care what the flavours of the week are when I shove out my hand clutching $ 10 for box of 4, «JUST TAKE MY MONEY!!!» I don’t get them every week, but I honestly spend a hella lot of time daydreaming about them every week. Dense but moist and flavour packed… just freaking blissfully perfect.
**I think it’s important to note here that the interesting flavours do not simply come from the icing, but the dough as well.

I’ve been folllowing Moonshine donuts on instagram for a few months and I finally decided I could not take it anymore and took the trip down to the 124 street market on a Thursday to finally pick some of these bad but up and let me tell you… These donuts are amazeballs!
The flavour I received in my box were: Pink Lemonade (What! I know), Almond Earl Grey, Beer Pretzel Chocolate and Classic Sprinkle.
The best part is every week the box is a little different, so there will always be a new innovative flavour to try — Which is great for my taste buds — not so much for my bikini bod but hey, everything in moderation right!
Anyway my box of 4 donuts was $ 10. Money well spent. I believe the price per box goes down as well if you buy more boxes.
Unfortunately the donuts got a little smushed in my basket on my bike ride home so I was unable to snap a pic of them but they are as pleasing to the eye as they are the taste buds.

I bought some moonshine donuts at the farmers market, kept hearing about their donuts so decided to try to them myself. It was 10 $ a box for a pack of 4 which is an okay price. They are Vegan gluten free donuts, they were moist inside which was good. Also they have different flavors that we don’t really see. For some of the donuts I thought they were too sweet, but I loved the chocolate ones.

So if you’re anything like me, when you think of vegan gluten free doughnuts, you say to yourself, «Yah, no thanks. I’ll go through my cardboard recycling to find something a little bit tastier. «That is before the genius of Moonshine began shining in my life.
These guys are something else. They have the most creative mixes of flavors I’ve ever seen. As you’re reading the list of the weeks flavors (that by the way is different every week) you hear a record scratch. Earl Grey and Habiscus? lavender Vanilla? Matcha Smore? Say what?
They are often at the 124 St. Market (which is our favorite) as well as the City Market.
And if you are still not sold on the gluten free, they regular flour as well. No matter what your diet permits, these guys are an awesome option!

I had the opportunity to learn more about Moonshine Doughnuts from volunteering for the Red Shoe Crawl and they graciously participated as a vendor. Since they don’t have a store front, they were able to use the back room of a flower and gift shop which as pretty nice.
Simon brought in about 10 boxes of doughnuts that they had freshly made that day, to share with the participants. The doughnuts are vegan friendly and they also offer gluten free ones as well. They have a variety of unique flavours and today were sharing whiskey spice and hibiscus vanilla which were nicely decorated with red lips to go along with the theme of the event.
The doughnuts are sold at the 124 Street, 104 Street, and UofA farmer’s markets. The prices are 4 for $ 10 or a dozen for $ 28. The prices are very reasonable for the product. I tried both of the doughnuts and loved the texture was not greasy and fried but the baked goodness was light and flavourful. The whiskey spice was nicely spiced like a piece of spiced cake. Yum! The hibiscus vanilla had an unique flavour that I’ve never experienced from a doughnut.
What I really liked is that Simon and his partner also work jobs in additional to operating Moonshine Doughnuts. It’s their passion that drives them to make an exceptional product and committed to sharing them with customers. Simon is a quiet and nice guy. I enjoyed getting to know him and the products and see Moonshine Doughnuts.

The doughnuts don’t taste any different than oldish Tim Hortons doughnuts, sprinkled with a different flavouring. They were dry and not very flavourful. The fact that they don’t sell them separately almost put me off entirely, but the great reviews made me pay the $ 10 for 4 just to see what the fuss was about. I don’t get it! Will not be back. I’m not a huge fan if Tim Hortons doughnuts, but I would rather pay much less to get a similar product. The only thing I can think is that maybe the flavours in the box I got are not their strongest, and they had been sitting around a while.

Finally tried these doughnuts at City Market today and they did not disappoint. Cakey, moist, lots of flavour. Combinations are unique (ex. Strawberrry wasabi) Yummmm!!! Can’t wait to see where you take this business.
Ps thanks for not making them all gluten free/​vegan lol for us who love our flour, butter… and sugar ;)

These guys know doughnuts! I first fell in love with them at the City Farmers Market, where I was so entranced by their doughnuts I nearly forgot to take my change. We met again at the Harry Potter Unilocal Elite event and I recognized them right after I bit into one of the doughnuts. I pretty much cried out, «You guys are at the farmers market!!» Talk about memory of the senses!
Seriously, these doughnuts are heaven. They come up with beautifully fresh and bold flavours that you wouldn’t see in typical doughnuts, like coconut, raspberry and dare I say it – wasabi! I will definitely be looking for them again at the farmers market, a must try for any doughnut lover. Homer would be all over this.

I have to admit that I’m not much of a donut eater. I know that is an unCanadian thing to write, but fact is that I’m not a big fan of baked goods. However, Moonshine Doughnuts brought such unbelievable flavours to their table that I couldn’t resist trying a few– and they were really good. I would recommend these over a Horton’s anytime (seriously don’t eat those or drink the crack cocaine coffee either).
I don’t often eat donuts, but when I do, I prefer these donuts.

HI! This place is unreal. OMG I have never had such delicious and different donuts. I tried 3 flavours at a Unilocal Elite event and I’m happy to report I’ll be checking them out at the Farmer’s Market.
I don’t even really like donuts, but these my friends are gourmet and will make your mouth water. The Raspberry Hibiscus was my favourite, thinking about it makes me just want more. These donuts were so fresh, they melt in your mouth when you bite it.
The two guys I chatted with were so friendly, I can’t wait to go back and see what other flavours they have to offer!

Oh my goodness… We have been searching for delicious doughnut goodness in this city, to no avail, for ages; the search is over. I had the most delicious bite I’ve had in ages tonight. Pistachio? Check. Orange? Check. A delicious spice cake? Check. I could seriously eat these things every day. These two fabulous guys brought three flavours to the Harry Potter Elite Event, and there wasn’t a loser in the bunch. Keep in mind, these are not your ordinary sugar and chocolate glazed confections. These are gourmet creations that combine unique flavours in to, like I said, the perfect bite. The doughnut itself is dense and moist, the icing thick and sweet (but not cloying)… I really don’t have a bad thing to say. Did I mention that the duo behind hear wonderful treats are super personable, easy to talk to and so, so nice. If you love doughnuts and love supporting local, you need to give these guys a shot. You will not be sad you did.

Check these guys out at both the downtown & 124 street Farmer’s Markets! Personally, I’m hoping to see them at the St. Albert Farmer’s Market this summer!
Their strawberry wasabi with black sesame seeds sprinkled on top were a show stealer — sweet with a hint of spicy! The raspberry hibiscus was simply divine and fit for a Princess tea party. They use hibiscus tea and you may just find little flecks within the donut — heavenly!
And a little birdie told me they do a killer bacon one ;-)
I highly recommend you consider Moonshine Doughnuts for your next party or office meeting! Can you imagine the surprise on your coworkers’ faces when they get to choose between their uniquely and perfectly crafted creations?!? I’m thinking baby showers, corporate events, birthday parties… it’s endless!
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Matt & Simon again soon to try out their latest culinary creation!
