Specialties

Our shop caters to beginner cyclists and to cycling enthusiasts alike; to those who haven’t been on a bike since they were a youngster, but also to who commute as part of their daily routine. To boot, we offer a range of espresso drinks and Mighty Leaf teas and a lending library. From bike repairs, to new and used bikes, to making a fine cup of coffee, this is what we live for!

History

Established in 2010.

Sprung out of a passion for cycling, but also for living a healthy and relaxed lifestyle, the idea for the shop developed over a number of years leading up to its Grand Opening. Mike’s began as a home-based business and has grown over time to occupy a spot in the heart of Edmonton’s French Quarter.

I want my passion for bikes, and my growing love of everything coffee to come across in all that I do at the shop. I want people to feel welcome and to enjoy the space for all that it has to offer, from the coolest new bikes I could find on the market, to the collection of vintage and antique bikes hanging from the rafters, to the lattes I whip up, which I am slowly but surely becoming proficient at. For example, the newest addition to my latte art repertoire is the latte swan. Which sometimes comes out looking like a dragon. That one’s a work in progress.

Let’s start this review off with a little giggle… Tee hee! Because I just think this is the most unique, adorable name/concept ever! Bikes AND Beans! Genius!
While I am NOT a bike person (the only time I have road a bike, in the last decade, was in Amsterdam on a tour and I was, well… fairly «Amsterdamed») But, my father, good Ol’ Daddy Marshall, rides his bike to work and back, April through October. So, I popped in and can definitely see coming here to get him bike purchases for future gifts. And, I just love that you can grab a lovely caffeinated pick-me-up to have while you wander around.
I also like that they have lots of different types of bikes, from the hare-core ones for sport, to the hipster trendy bikes in pretty colours.

I drive past Mike’s Bikes and Beans everyday to and from work. I thought it’s great to see another independent bike shop opening up in Edmonton and I think the little strip mall it is in has a lot of potential.
It had probably been open a year or more and I still hasn’t stopped in. So one day before my massage in this same nice little strip mall I decided to go a bit early and check out a few of the shops.
Mike’s Bikes and Beans really impressed me with the wide variety and unique bikes they had in stock. I was wondering what would make this shop different and I think there will be bikes here that you would have trouble finding anywhere else in the city.
It’s also cool that they have a little coffee shop thing going on. I don’t drink coffee but if they had any alternatives for us non-coffee drinkers that would be great.
My visit was brief but I think this is a great addition to the Centre 82 strip mall and to the Bonnie Doon/King Edward Park neighbourhoods. I will be back to do some more shopping and maybe a tune-up on my bike!

I had seen the signs and with a name that included Bikes and Beans, I was excited to check it out.
To be fair, I was only there for the coffee… this country girl does not know how to cycle in the city. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try, and that day I’ll come back to Mikes Bikes and Beans for the bicycle selection. While I’m obviously unfamiliar with bikes, to me, it looked like they had a nice selection with many different kinds of bikes and accessories.
And for anyone who loves design, there’s a few features that stood out to this fan — great old bikes hanging from the ceiling and an incredible floor. I think we should clear the bikes and have a dance party!
But back to the coffee, the reason I popped in… I feel there’s a lack of coffee shops in Bonnie Doon (specifically ones open in the later evening) and while MB&B isn’t open late evening, it was refreshing to try something new. The primary focus is obviously bikes but there’s a cute little section with three, two person tables and chairs and a surprising offering of coffee, teas, lattes and more. I think it would be enjoyable to grab a latte, especially if you’re getting some repairs done, or your with someone who is bike shopping and you’re ready for a break! It’s a super nice option to have!
