Description

Specialties

Our specialty is the Donair. We wont play you for stupid. We can sit here all day and tell you how good the Donair at Checkmate is and you wont believe us unless you’ve tried it for yourself. A Donair is a combination of great meat, fresh vegetables and just the right amount of sweet in the sauce. After rigorous trials and repetition we think we’ve figured out what makes the best Donair. They keep boasting «Halifax Donair this and Halifax Donair that.» we want to change that to «yea but its not like the Donair out West!» we want them boasting the «Edmonton Donair», the new greatest Donair coast to coast! If you do stop by, let us hear your opinion because we take it all — the good and the bad — and we hope to see you soon!

History

Established in 2010.

Checkmate Donair was opened by an enthusiastic young (kinda’ old) couple whose love for Donair started them on this journey. Their experience in the food industry dates all the way back to 1985 and has helped them develop and continue to develop a sophisticated Donair for sophisticated tastes. They claim that the Donair is the «star of the ball», however, an array of menu items accompany the Donair and provide a variety of quality competitors.

Meet the Business Owner

Rick A.

Business Owner

Rick’s life journey would eventually migrate him to the United States for the ever elusive American Dream. When he ultimately woke up from that dream he found himself stranded in the Canadian Rockies with nothing but a blanket (well it was actually his driveway where he had slipped and hit his head on the pavement rendering him unconscious… gotta clean that snow Rick!). Canada introduced Rick to the vast prairies where he was met with a small town called Oyen. Oyen reinvigorated in him his love and passion for food which he had growing up and he went on to open a successful restaurant for 10 years. His children eventually grew up (that’s up for debate) and moved to Edmonton to pursue their education and because Rick values family above everything else he decided he wanted to be close to his children. He sold his restaurant in Oyen and moved to Edmonton to continue his endeavors! 4 years later and Checkmate Donair is still going strong! Rock on Rick!
