Quaint little place. Nothing flashy. Canned soft drinks so nothing watered down. They do offer free underground parking but we just parked on the street behind the restaurant. Food was good but $ 1.95 for a very small gravy and .95 cents for coleslaw is a bit high. Service was a bit slow but I think they were short staffed. Will definitely give it a try again.

Well, we ventured to Back Home for Fish and Chips again for take out… it was disgusting. The chips were not cooked, but were hard, pale and very greasy. The fish was very, very greasy and the way it was packaged made the batter very wet and soggy. It cost us $ 35 – 40 for our takeout and it was gross. I ended up throwing out the chips and having a(very expensive) fish sandwich. Never again

The name is perfect. It feels like a small town restaurant. Tacky décor that has not been changed in a very long time. It is a very casual place. The staff are down to earth. We had a sampler platter. It came with fries, razor clams, scallops, prawns, calamari, and fish. All battered and deep fried. We enjoyed the fish the batter was light and not too greasy. The rest of the dish we did not care for. I would avoid the calamari. They are those pre made rings, the ones that look like onion rings. Tough and chewy. The razor clam strips are small. I was going to use the bathroom but after I saw it I decided to wait till I got home. It was dirty, the white floor tiles are textured and have grime in all the grooves. None of the stalls looked clean. The seats were crooked. It needs to be renovated. So after this experience we would maybe order the fish again. But we would get takeout.

I have been here once before, and the food was okay, but the service left something to be desired. I decided to try again, and I was so disappointed. My girlfriend had the fish burger and fries, both of which were soggy. I had the spaghetti and meatballs special, and the sauce was so watery, and the meatballs were clearly from Ikea(which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but doesn’t really give me the impression of «back home»). The waitress attempted to be friendly but she didn’t appear to really enjoy being there. I won’t be back.

Greasy, gross and out dated. This fish and chip diner was unwelcoming and lacks any charm. The staff seem preoccupied and inattentive. The baby chair they gave us to use was quite dirty, no one offering to help while I scrubbed it with wet wipes as she took our drink order. Table clothes smelt quite bad. Lemon juice instead of real lemons are offered. Ordered the fish and chips, in one word: Greasy! Not served in newspaper and literally dripping with grease when picked up. The fries were also very greasy and soggy. Also, what restaurant serves can pop? Get fountain pop it’s actually much cheaper. One thing I’m positive is top of mind here, not service, food quality, nor ambience. I’m never returning but I imagine they won’t last long unless they seriously change… Everything.

Kent A. is spot on. Absolutely awful. If you’re advertising fish and chips as your thing, at least do a passable job. The piece of fish I got was tiny, flavorless, and coated with a very thin layer of greasy, soggy batter. The chips were also greasy and soggy. And I don’t mean nice grease. This is old, re-used fat. I went here after having moved in around the corner and was really looking forward to having a good chippie next door. Crestfallen. And the waitress kept trying to shake me down for tips on a takeout order when I was waiting for it right beside the kitchen. Ok, you work long hours. But yes please, I would like change from that, and how presumptuous of you to ask if you can keep my money for doing more than passing me a paper bag! Don’t go here. I can’t imagine worse.

Just before going in a family came out saying what horrible service they got. After seeing how over fried and greasy the food was I feel I dodged the deep fried bullet. Went to Joe’s at west ed and got a better fish dinner for less.

Not exactly what I was expecting. Ordered takeout and ate in the car in typical eastern fashion. Fish was ok. Not super crispy and lacked flavour. The fries were just ok. Not exactly the«down home» experience I was hoping for after being in Halifax and St. John’s not three weeks before. Good, but not great.

Amazing. The food was so amazing I just can’t stop raving about it. The fish was perfect not heavy and greasy like some places(Brits I’m looking at you). I also enjoyed the roast beef dinner with perfectly done beef and some amazing gravy. The service was fast and friendly I will definitely be returning to my new favorite fish and chip restaurant and recommend you check out this amazing gem.

I was here for a quick lunch, and the food was acceptable. I felt comfortable as I would in a diner.

A few thoughts: — Laid back place — Lack any sort of atmosphere or ambiance — Prices are very reasonable and the portions are big Overall, it’s not a bad place if you like the greasy, diner style fish and chips. For me personally, it’s too greasy and left a heavy, nauseating feeling in my stomach. Not a fan.

‘Just Like Home.’ The name implies that the fish and chips you’ll eat here are in traditional style, and will be good, because fish n chips is a Brit thing. It is not so. This place is disgusting. I spent $ 14 on one piece of halibut and fries as a ‘dinner meal’ with a drink and a side. Asked for buttered bread as a side. First off, I was NOT offered any cool, kitschy Brit soda like some reviews suggest. Fountain pop or water. Whatever, I like cola. I grab some bench at the bar and read a book beside the faux fire for like fifteen minutes while they make me some fish. They being a family of Asian descent. Now, nothing wrong with that: my favorite fish n chippies in Vancouver is Asian owned. But these guys aren’t doing it right, they need a real British chippie to come in and teach them how to fry, especially if they’re calling it «back home.» My chips are soggy and flavorless. A lot of salt and ketchup was required. The fish was terrible. The only thing flakier than the batter was the fish inside, and both were so tastless that salt, lemon, AND ketchup were required. I hate when I’m forced to bathe my fishie in ketchup. That’s not the worst of it though. For my bread and butter, I was expecting a roll or a bun. Nope! A single slice of wonderbread on a plate with a packet of butter. That’s the last straw. Screw this place, I’ll never be back. I felt bloatey and icky all night. Grade D quality fish n chips. Don’t feel bad for me though. It was just $ 14 for me — the young man behind me buying for his family of 5 who were in town plunked out $ 130 for this rubbish, and an old man dropped $ 60 in dindins for his old lady and a granddaughter(or prostitute, wasn’t sure) of some sort. Don’t go!

Chris: I’ve ordered take-out a few times from this place. The atmosphere is ordinary, yet cozy and friendly. The good: The batter is delicious and has a nice golden crisp. Scallops and shrimp are fresh, juicy, and decent-sized. The bad: It’s very expensive for what you get. Last time I paid $ 20 for 9 scallops and french fries. The fries are nothing special. I’ve had better from McDonald’s. The scallops were great, but they were devoured in a flash. A dinner for two will easily cost upwards to around $ 50 if you want to experience fish & chips. All the seafood is basically fried. I didn’t enjoy the haddock my first time. It was overcooked, dry, and tough. Don’t be surprised to think, «Did I really just pay THIS much for a meal at THIS place?».

In the mood for fish and chips, I decided to try this restaurant. I ordered 2 pieces of fish and chips. The fish was ok and not too greasy but I didn’t find it was that special either. I don’t usually have fish and chips so perhaps I’m not a big enough fan to appreciate them. The service was ok but it’s more like a mom and pop shop than anything.

Tried Back Home today on our quest to find the best quality and value fish ‘n chips in Edmonton! We came today around 1PM on Canada Day and the restaurant had 4 other tables of patrons. Service was excellent — attentive & they even provided our toddler with a coloring page from a Dora coloring book and a few crayons. We opted to try a little of everything from their seafood options. Unfortunately the food did not live up to our hopes — my husband and I both agreed we would give the food 2 stars based on quality and price; however the attentive and quick service have elevated Back Home to 3 stars. To start, we shared a bowl of their Seafood Chowder with garlic toast– $ 6.95 The seafood chowder was hearty — though I think a slightly larger bowl would be reasonable for the price. Lots of chopped up white fish and bits of shrimp. Not your typical heavy cream for a clam chowder — tasty none the less! Uploaded a pic! Seafood Delight Plate — $ 22.95: 1 piece Haddock, 6 Digby Scallops, 5 Black Tiger Shrimp, 3 Rings of Calamari, 4 oz. of Clam Strips & French Fries. Everything on this platter was deepfried :-(Both the Scallops and Calamari were overcooked in the deep fryer — I wonder if everything was just thrown in one basket and fried the same amount of time? I’ve uploaded a pic! 3 piece Haddock & Chips $ 12.50 — Hubby enjoyed the lightness of the batter. The table had salt and pepper, seafood sauce, and white vinegar(no malt vinegar) set upon it. In summary — a nearly $ 50 meal with tip seems a little hefty for the food we ate. My husband really enjoyed the batter on their fish and didn’t find it greasy at all. I was disappointed that everything on the Seafood Platter was deepfried — including the scallops when purcahsed separately on the menu as an entrée you get to choose how they are cooked. Service was pleasant and efficient! I’d stick to the basics here — and avoid the more expensive platters.

I really like the feel of this place. It’s friendly and welcoming, which is nice because the two times I’ve been there I’ve been eating alone. The fish is delicious and greasy and satisfying. And the fries are nice and crispy. The place is basic, but clean. They have a bunch of other non-fish things on the menu too, but I’ve only gone for fish. Although I overheard the waitress telling some other customers who came in about 20 minutes before close that they could only get fish since the rest of the kitchen was closed. The only problem is that I always forget how greasy food works, and think that I can totally eat 3 pieces of fish plus a pile of fries. I’m so full.

I enjoyed every minute of my dinner tonight at Back Home Fish & Chips. I don’t know exactly where«back home» is … but it’s probably safe to say it’s somewhere near an ocean of fish … at any rate, I felt like I was there. The waitress was warm and welcoming, the restaurant’s atmosphere was no-frills, with your basic booths, laminated menus and neatly laid-out paper napkin and cutlery. The food here is the draw — and the people came for dinner. Despite the almost full house, my meal arrived in under five minutes. I savoured two pieces of battered, fresh haddock and fries accompanied by gravy, silky tartar with a mild zing, vinegar, ketchup and lemon juice. There are so many ways to eat your fish & chips. I felt rather«OCD» trying out different condiment combos with each deep-fried morsel: tartar only, lemon and tartar, vinegar, lemon and ketchup, and then for the Grand Poobah of mouthfuls — the works! Note: this fish was good enough to eat plain and batter-less. It was that fresh! Why anyone would do this is beyond me. One last point: a food establishment can be summed up by their bottled ketchup. In this case, the decanted condiment was fresh, the plastic container as clean as mom’s refrigerator and counter-tops, and you didn’t have to wonder if the bottom of the bottle contained ketchup from 1998. I finished my meal with the homemade blueberry pie and ice cream — ’cause you just gotta have pie at a Mom & Pop’s fish shop … and it was love at first bite. The pastry on top was even thatched like in the Crisco commercials! Don’t laugh — I’m a country girl at heart. And a Pisces. My bill was $ 17 — including meal, pie, ice-cream and coffee. Three and a half hours later, I can feel my digestive enzymes working overtime still breaking down pie … but since visits back home for a meal like this are far and few between, I’ll just consider this my early Maritime Thanksgiving. Pilgrims rule — but I think there’s tryptophan in pie;)

First off, I just wanted to say, I really wanted to like this place. I’ve heard some good things, and I was hoping it might ring true to it’s title. Unfortunately my excitement was dampened by confusing service and poorly cooked food. When a east coaster hears«Back home fish n chips», they can’t help but get a little excited. The best fish n chips I’ve ever had was still from a little chip truck outside of my school back in Nova Scotia. When you get the best fish n chips you’ve ever had from a truck in a parking lot, and then you go into a restaraunt where they employ cooks and servers. you’d assume they’d have the potential to make the whole thing a bit better would’nt you? Not the case in this situation unfortunately. The fish was smaller than expected, cut into squares(dont ask) instead of strips, it was lightly battered but full of grease, and the worst part. the fish was way too overcooked. When you eat Haddock, you think of it as being a bit flaky, easy to break off. this was tough, and I struggled with my fork to break bits off. Really disapointing. We got 7 peices for 14 $ and it was a struggle for me to get through. If the fish was good, I could understand the price. If it was excellent, I would call it a deal. But considering you can get all you can eat fish n chips at Obyrnes for less, where the fish is considerably better(I know, says a lot), I actually felt sad to pay for what I got. Another couple things that got me. We asked for a side of poutine, which is on the menu for 5.50 $. I didnt expect much, but it came out with a huge portion, of what was obviously store bought gravy and cheddar cheese(no mozza?). The chips were not cooked very well, and on top, they charged me for a Large fries, add on gravy, and add on cheese making it about 9 $. when Poutine was clearly on the menu, and clearly what I asked for. 1 more tidbit. my friend likes to add lemon to her cola. We asked for some lemon wedges(you’d think this would be a staple at a fish n chip joint) and they said no, they don’t have lemon, just lemon juice in a bottle. They gave her the lemon for her drink with the condiments tray next to the ketchup. I’m sorry but even the truck had fresh lemon. The worst thing about this is. I was excited to try it, I really wanted it to be good, and really wanted to like it. but everything just worked together to ensure I will never be back. I wish things were different. but it’s not me. its you.

A last minute change to a location where I was to attend a party forced me to scope out places to have supper early on a Sunday evening. In the 124 street area, the pickings are slim, as most everything is closed on Sundays. Back Home Fish and Chips was my choice as my family used to do take out from here frequently and I have good memories of the food. The interior of the restaurant is very nondescript, with tables and booths sporting aged, red and white checkered tablecloths like out of a 50s diner. I seated myself as the chalkboard instructed, and it was about five minutes before a server came over to give me a menu and take my drink order. The menu is full of comfort and greasy spoon types of foods: steaks, burgers, chicken strips, perogies, seafood of all kind, and, of course, fish and chips — the place’s signature dish. I opted for a small fish and chips, which included three pieces of breaded haddock and fries. I added a small side of coleslaw to my meal for an additional 75 cents. My food came speedily, and I was astounded by how large the«small» actually was. The three pieces of fish were quite substantial, with a thin, crispy coating that was not overly greasy. The fries were plentiful and freshly made. I enjoyed the fresh coleslaw, and wish there was more of it — in my opinion, coleslaw should be included in a meal of fish and chips, but 75 cents is not a huge price to pay. Other add-ons include gravy and mushy peas. My meal cost me around $ 12 — not cheap, but the freshness and quality did not make me resent forking over the cash. Most of the other meals on the menu were in the $ 10-$ 15 range, with exceptions being larger orders of fish and chips, such as the family pack. There were quite a few patrons there, possibly owing to the fact that there aren’t many affordable places open in that area on a Sunday. I could also tell that some of the people there were regulars. I’ll definitely bear Back Home in mind if I am ever stuck in the same situation again.
