When I’m in the Ottawa area, I always try to stay at the Carleton Heritage Inn in Carleton Place. You can’t really call this place a hotel, though, because they don’t seem to have a staff per se – just a few folks on the premises running about during the day and maybe no one after dark. Some might call it a polite Faulty Towers, but I’d say it’s more like a bed-and-breakfast without the breakfast. If you can get past that reality, you’ll find the Carleton Heritage a well-appointed and historic building whose rooms have almost all of the amenities you would expect in a good hotel at rates usually cheaper than Ottawa. On my last visit, the outdoor temperature reached minus-40 degrees Fahrenheit during the night and I remained warm and happy in my room after a decent dinner in their small restaurant. It’s a cozy and relaxing place even though you might expect John Cleese to pop up at the front desk.
