I was getting ready for a BBQ yesterday afternoon and stopped in at a different liquor store for some cold beer. The cooler was close to empty, and then I realized heat wave + stampede + weekend just ending could mean beer had become scarce. The Grape is on my way home from the grocery store, so I thought I’d check out their cooler. Luckily they were much better stocked than my first stop. The owner kindly offered to help me take the boxes to my car, even though she was the only one working in the store. They have a cooler with a lot of different single cans and bottles of beer, a good way to try something new without commiting :)

I went into The Grape looking for a nice red wine. When first walking in one might think this place is actually a gallery! There are fantastic pieces of art displayed throughout the store. The red wines are displayed individually on a dark wood shelf, the whites are kept in a cooler. I was greeted right away by Salim the owner. He asked me what I was looking for, I said a nice red, he asked if it was for just drinking or dinner, I said appetizers, he asked me my price range, I said affordable, immediately he picked up a red melbec. I asked if it was dry and he said yes, so he grabbed another sav for me and told me that was one of his favorites. He apologized for the lack of selection, this is the time of year that he chooses new wines since it is a bit slower. There were about 12 reds or so. He samples and chooses wines himself, so he knows everything in the store. I asked about whites, he only had a couple choices still available but highly recommended one from Chile, it was $ 18 and if I was interested in buying both he would give me a bit of a discount. I told him that I won’t pass up discounted wine! He laughed, saying that is the nice thing about being the boss is that he gets to call the shots. He has been in business for 5 years and I can tell he really strives to treat his customers right, so he can build a good repertoire among them. He also carries a small selection of liquors and both domestic and international beers, all for decent prices. There are a few champagnes as well. Sure there isn’t a huge variety of wines, but when they are all tasty and Salim can find a good fit for you personally, it doesn’t matter. The white wine, which he gave me for $ 15, turned out to be one of the yummiest I have ever had, my new fave I think! The red, which cost me $ 15, was perfect for the occasion! I highly recommend checking out The Grape, Salim will set you up! I can’t wait to go back and try something else!

You know what most liquor stores are missing? People who know what they are talking about. Thankfully, The Grape Wine & Spirits doesn’t have that problem. That said, it’s also not perfect. The Grape opened a few years ago and has been run primarily by Saleem. He’s personally tasted all the product he sells and the store enjoys a good selection of wines and some very interesting beer choices. Typical domestic beer is available, but beyond that they also bring in foreign choices that you’d be hard pressed to find at other stores. On the wine front, and an expansion of my earlier knowledge comments, Saleem can help you choose a wine based on a combination of your personal tastes and how you plan on drinking it. For someone like me, who knows nothing about wine, this makes The Grape invaluable. If you visited The Grape any time prior to about a year and a half ago, please go again. They suffered from major stock issues and their selection was terrible. Since then, they have come full circle and now have a great selection. The Grape is small though, so don’t expect the huge selection you’d find at your corner liquor store. But for great people, great knowledge, and amazing atmosphere, please check out The Grape!
