History

Established in 1978.

The store was started by a nurse in 1978 as a source of information on health and alternative health and personal growth. In 2003, Marla Simpson purchased the business. With renewed energy and focus, Marla grew the store into a key destination in Calgary. She opened a second location in Willow Park Village Mall in 2004 to serve customers in the south side of Calgary. She also began a service to do book displays at off-​site conferences for business and mental health events. In 2009, the building on 19^th Street that Self Connection had occupied for 31 years was sold and the store was forced to look for a new home. In January 2010, Self Connection re-​located to Bowness Road NW (area called Montgomery). The new location is double the original size on 19^th Street and features lots more inventory plus a presentation room for seminars and workshops. Self Connection now offers information workshops almost every day of hte week. Catalogs of e-​books will be added next.

Business Owner

Marla’ background is business administration. In 2002 she left the downtown corporate world of Calgary to find a new direction and career. She has always been an avid reader of books and has been on a spiritual journey since the 1980’s, and so when the opportunity to purchase Self Connection was presented to her in 2003, she felt that it was where she needed to be. Even though she did not have any experience in retail or the book industry, she worked hard to learn the business and build it. She believed that there was a strong need in our community for this bookstore and wanted to make it into something bigger and better than when she bought it. She has done that and more.
