Driving south along 14th street on Christmas Eve to see the extravagant Christmas light displays has always been a part of family, but it wasn’t until this summer that I really spent any time in Confederation park. It’s wonderful and way bigger than I had ever expected. For cyclists, Confederation park acts as the perfect commuter path, keeping you safe from motor vehicles for a NE stretch of about 20 blocks by 10 blocks. If you want to keep riding north from there, it’s just a small neighbourhood jaunt eastward to get to the Nose Creek Pathway — the Deerfoot Trail for bikes. With a creek, bridges, playground, baseball diamonds, a 10th street underpass, and plenty of mowed lawn space, there’s plenty of perfectly manicured parkland to enjoy and much that I still haven’t explored. It’s a really gorgeous location that is positioned in a way to give you the feeling of not being in the city at all. It’s no wonder you see so many couples getting their wedding or engagement photos done here.

This park is a hidden gem in this city. It’s much larger than it seems and it’s not very busy. There are always available benches and a few scattered picnic tables. It’s a great place for a nice walk, bike ride or picnic. There is plenty of space for frisbee or kite flying. The lovely creek, pedestrian bridges and duck pond make it so serene. My only complaint is that there is no washroom facilities closer to 14th street side I go there nearly every day for a quick walk around the loop, which is approx 1 mile.

Stunning, peaceful, clean and well manicured — what a place to have a picnic. Tall tress line the pathways that are friendly to bikes, dogs, roller bladers, walkers and one cool guitar player strumming away in his pyjamas! A big park, but not too big. We were able to walk it all. Ponds house the ducks amongst the babbling brooks and happy squirrels run this way and that over acres and acres of grass. There are several ball diamonds and a tennis court. Many places for families to gather as there were an abundance of tables and benches left in memory to loved ones. There were quite a few photographers there today on a Sat — it is just a gorgeous spot. I am going to take more time to slow down, change my walking scene and go down there more often.

Now that the sun is out again and the ground has dried up some, I get to fall in love with Confederation Park all over again. While this used to be my go-to park for a run, I’ve been a bit too far away to enjoy it for that the last couple of years. But finding myself in need of a change of scenery(and a break from my day), I scuttled over here this morning for a quick jog down exercise lane. It was a wonderful morning, and this park will only get better as summer rolls in. It’s a great spot to find a tree or picnic table with your book, to have a lusciously green background for your wedding photos, to take an afternoon or evening stroll through or grab your frisbee to toss back and forth with a friend and has just enough hills to challenge you a bit but without feeling like you’ve just run up the two hundred or so stairs over by Memorial Drive.

Confederation Park brings back so many memories for me. It’s the park I frequented most growing up and I’ve spent a good part of my life feeding the ducks here in the summer and tobogganing in the winter. Coming in at a stunning 400 acres of green space, Confederation Park is located in N.W. Calgary between the neighbourhoods of Mount Pleasant, Capitol Hill, Collingwood and Highland Park. The park has got everything from picnic tables, bicycle paths, tennis courts and baseball diamonds, all the way to luscious wetlands, eye-catching nature and awe-inspiring wildlife. It’s most well-known for hosting the spectacular Lions Club Christmas Light Display during the winter months and considering it’s adjacent to The Confederation Park Golf Course, it is just as popular during the summer months.
