Really cool technology here! I had Dr. Smith explain things to me and it was a really fun and quick visit. They still have that thing that blows in your eyes, which is my least favourite, but they are able to use this cool camera that takes a photo of the back/inside of your eye without having to put those drops in your eyes to paralyze them so they can take a look. Pretty cool. They also do a lot of baseline mapping on your eyes to watch for degeneration of different parts of your eyes. Definitely a bit more expensive(appointment cost $ 149 and I think I paid like $ 99 last time) but worth the extra technology. Everyone was decently friendly and I would definitely recommend.

My most recent eye exam was at least five years ago until I booked an appointment at Calgary Optometry Centre in Hunterhorn, which was yesterday. This was my first visit to the clinic and I was scheduled for 8:30am, right when they open. I felt the women operating reception were a little disorganized and grim, but I suspect it was the new patient demands first thing in the morning. I underwent three eye examinations via machine and then used the Optomap Plus retinal laser imaging system, which provides a detailed view of the inside of your eye. It helps with earlier detection of any retinal disease and for eye signs of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer. This certainly was a wake-up call as to why we all should have regular eye exams, because it isn’t just about the quality of your vision. I saw Dr. Jeff Smith, who is young and easy to connect with. He walked me through a few more exams and reviewed the results of the Optomap on a computer monitor in his office. It’s cool and interesting. He also noted that there are only about 16 of these devices in Calgary and they were the first clinic in Canada to have it. I assume each of their locations has one. The cost of my appointment was double that of my last one, but I presume it’s because of their high-tech diagnostics. My medical plan certainly won’t cover it all, but if I can afford high-tech, how can I lose? 23⁄30 for Unilocal’s 30 Day Challenge
