Frituur Number One

With some help from Frituur No. 1 I survived 3 days of strictly Belgian decadent food: Fries, Waffles and Beer. I miss that, and I highly recommend. Potato fries are high art in Belgium, and I wish they could bring it abroad the way they did with chocolate. Fresh cut daily delivered potatoes friend in two or three oils at two or three temperature points… Yummy.

If this place was outside Belgium, it would probably be 4 stars. Here, they’re solid, but could use improvement. The fries are slightly thinner than a traditional, ticker Belgian frite. They’re also served in a boat, which seems typical to Antwerp, but doesn’t add much to the cone that we’re used to. We enjoyed our fries. But they’re standard.

Don’t know where they got the name from but I really prefer the fries in McDonald’s than these here… Bad experience and not really friendly. No thanks!

According to my local foodie friends, one of the best on the area. Been here many times over the years. I am a purist and prefer mayo or tartar but they have a list of sauces. It’s good.

OK, fully acknowledging that this is crap for your body, these were hot, crispy and delicious. If you’re having a touristy day (or hour or moment), and the weather is nice, get them smothered in mayo and sit on a bench outside on the market square to eat them.

Als ich vor einiger Zeit in Antwerpen war, stand natürlich auch ein Besuch bei vom Hören sagen besten «Frittenmacher» der Stadt Antwerpen an. Mein Fahrzeug ließ ich außerhalb der Großstadt an einem großen Park & Rail Bahnhof stehen und machte mich nach Antwerpen auf mit den dort sehr bekannten Straßenbahnen, einer «Tram».
Angekommen in Antwerpen machte ich sogleich erst einmal eine ausführliche Stadtbesichtigung.
Davon später in einer anderen Bewertung mehr.
Mit zunehmender Dauer verspürte ich natürlich gegen die Mittagszeit Hunger und machte mich dann an Hand meines Stadtplanes auf die Suche zur Hoogstraat, um den Frituur n1 aufzusuchen.
Als ich dort ankam, sah ich schon von weitem, das eine Menschenmenge dort vorstand.
Zuerst habe ich natürlich ein paar Fotos gemacht, um das auch festzuhalten und zur Erinnerung.
Danach schloss ich mich in die immer größer werdende Menschenschlange ein, und schaute mir dabei schon einmal einige Angebote an, welche groß und übersichtlich auf den Tafeln zu lesen war.
Ich entschied mich dann für Pommes rot/​weiß und Fleischhackballen und eine Dose Cola.
Nachdem ich dann innerhalb weniger Minuten meine Essensbestellung entgegen genommen und bezahlt hatte, setzte ich mich in einen angrenzenden Raum. Dieser Raum war mit Sitzbänken und Tischen ausgestattet und des weiteren der Durchgang zu den Toiletten.
Sodann begann ich mein Essen einzunehmen und ich muss gestehen, das ich wirklich selten so leckere und schmackhafte Fritten gegessen habe. Auch die Fleischhackbällchen waren sehr lecker und schmackhaft.
Ich lernte an meinem Tisch noch dazu nette Leute aus Deutschland kennen und tauschten uns noch ein wenig über Antwerpen und seine Sehenswürdigkeiten aus.

Definitely my favourite frituur in Antwerp! I’ve discovered why Belgian fries are so famous thanks to this place. The side seating areas are very helpful since they do not smell.

This review is on behalf of my Dutchman. Eek! Me think not! If you are looking for some authentic and tasty fries, than this is definitely not the spot! The fries here are not properly baked through and especially made week. These fries are equivalent to McDonalds. Some people love it and some people hate it. There are so many things that I love about Belgium but this frie spot brings a bad name to Belgian frites.

I went here yesterday. I wasn’t hungry but since I was in the city, wanted to try Frituur Number One because of a Unilocal review I read. The frites were great and waiting in line to order them was very entertaining. An Italian young lady was making her order in bad English and kept pointing at everything asking «vegeterian, vegeterian, vegetarian» to which the lady working there said, «no. there is fish if you consider that vegetarian.» The Italian said, «no, that’s not a vegetable!» I then joined in with, «frites are vegetarian!» The lady said, «no, they’re cooked in beef fat.» The Italian lady nearly freaked out. A priceless expression!
But I enjoyed the experience. Where I ordered, which is usually outside but now covered up, I stood to the side and ate. Afterwards I noticed that if you just go a few steps to the left, there are tables to sit down in the warmth. D’oh!

Au coeur du centre historique d’Anvers non loin des quais, je vous propose de découvrir cette friterie.
Considérée comme la meilleur friterie d’Anvers (j’avais peur en y allant de me retrouver confronté de la maison Antoine de Bruxelles), nous y sommes aller un soir de décembre et malgré le froid généralisé, la file se faisait jusqeu au dehors de l’établissement et cela né gênait personne.
Un petit coin sur le coté de la friterie propose des tables (un peu à la mode Quick/​mac Do) qui permettent de vous asseoir au chaud le temps de la dégustation. et je vais vous le dire enfin, oui ces frites étaient vraiment bonnes. croquantes à l’extérieur et tendre à l’interieur, une réussite grace au respect de la double cuisson à température controlée… j’adoooore
alors si vous passez par là, on hésite pas on s’assied et on déguste

Excerpt from an email I sent to my colleagues over the summer whilst in Belgium: Don’t know why we call ‘em «French fries» we should definitely be calling them «Belgian fries»! :)
I wrote this, of course, after having my first portion of fries from Frituur Number One. The «small» was actually massive and covered in a most delicious mayo. I’ve since been back and I continue to be amazed by the crisp, golden exterior and piping hot potato goodness on the inside of Frituur Number One’s superior product.
They’ve got other items available but none of them are quite recognisable to me so I stick with the fries.
