For me the experience visiting this spot was one of those moments where my breath was taken away. As some people in our group went shopping in Durnstein we absolutely preferred to hike up and check out these ruins. Not only is the whole area breathtaking but just knowing the history that this area has seen gave me memories to always remember. Its worth every step up. I can’t wait to return.

The ruins of the Kuenringer Castle, sit atop a steep hill overlooking the beautiful town of Durnstein in the Wachau valley, accessible only by foot, it is a steep 30 minute climb but totally worth the effort. This is the Castle where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive when he was kidnapped on his way back from the crusades. To stand atop this hill and know the kind of history that has taken place in the region is simply a priceless experience. Visit Durnstein, and everyday while you’re there make sure to climb the hill all the way up to Kuenringer Castle.
