One of the best local pubs in Sydney. It comes with a theatre on the side and a crazy range of craft beers. Added to that the fact the staff are awesome and live the old Fitzroy values. Overall it’s a wonderful place, makes me happy to be human!

Old Style Pub that we enjoyed visiting on our food tour. They provided us with several beers to try and gave the history of the hotel and theatre in the back. Check it out if you are in Woolloomooloo!

I sort of wonder why there is a pub in Woolloomooloo called the Old Fitzroy when Fitzroy is in Melbourne, but that is beside the point because this was a lovely little pub with some cool alcohol related anecdotes on the wall, such as ‘Giving up drinking and smoking is said to give you a longer life when in reality it just makes life seem longer’. The bar staff were really friendly, especially the woman because she even gave me a candle for some light when she saw me scribbling some notes on my map. Oh, they also have jugs, not the standard Aussie, share your beer with a mate type jug, but a German style one litre stein type jug.

Been here few times for the theather. The place remind me of London pubs. Couple minutes walk from crazy Kings Cross you have a nice old quite place with lots of beer on tap and Thai kitchen on the back and a small independent theater downstairs. Very different than usual Aussie pub. You can even play pool upstairs.

After reading Tim D’s review I headed down to the Old Fitzroy on Anzac day and as soon as I walked in I felt as if I was back in London again. It has a real English pub feel to it and with a great line of beers and ale’s on offer. A few scooners enjoyed before moving on to meet some friends dinner left a lasting impression and one that means could be making this my local after another visit or two and also to experience some performances. A great little place so be sure to make the trek off the path to the bright lights of King Cross and enjoy a drink or two here!

Fitz I do love thee, you’ve got a great crowd a theatre down stairs dodgy thai kitchen, real character even a fire in the winter. Pool Tables upstairs and table and chairs on the street. Seems you are in a constant battle with the neighbours however over the noise and now its summer time you really do need those front windows open for the air flow. I don’t frequent this joint as often as I used too these days, a friend of mine whose a regular has been telling me to head down to see this band who play regular spots there convinced me to pop down on Australia Day Eve, it was pissing down with rain but it felt right so I did the Harleem shuffle down to the fitzy, and man am I glad I did. The band were cool the beers were flowing and the atmosphere in this front bar was electric. Its a good old Pub with really friendly people and staff.

The Old Fitz is primarily a hotel, but the highlight of this venue is for me the Old Fitz theatre. This intimate performance space is full of charm. The theatre and the pub have managed to escape all too familiar character depriving renovations and thus thrive with Wooloomooloo’s coolest kids. The space in itself may just be an air conditioned box with raked seating, but this box is illuminated by the calibre of the shows it holds. There’s also a distinct sense of time travel here, back to the days when a night at the local pub theatre was a weekly event. They pub also does the best Cheap Tuesday theatre deal in Sydney, a package of Beer, Laksa and Show for a pretty darn good price(that currently escapes me). The Old Fitz makes my(and TimeOut magazine’s) list for great pub entertainment, as a top spot to see some quality local independent theatre.

This is fantastic trip down memory lane, based in Kings Cross it is tucked away from the main drag. It is a theatre and old style pub with some great Asian fusion food. The Laksa from this pub is talked about in circles as far out as Newtown. The Tamarama Rock Surfers(a theatre group) regularly have shows in the intimate theatre contained within these walls. Its such an adventure attending a show here. There was recently a Halloween special on and it even had a 10.30pm session — so they are willing to be just that little bit different. I had a really enjoyable time at this pub, it is pretty much anything goes, you can have a quiet one or two, a show and a meal, or a night out with a couple of mates on the booze. Kings Cross is only a hop, step and a jump away, so I would definitely second the motion to visit the Old Fitz again.

There are plenty of pubs around Sydney that lack character, and the Old Fitzroy is certainly not one of them! From it’s famous laksa to its fantastic independent theatre, this is one of Sydney’s great pubs and at over 100 years old, it’s also one of the oldest! For 14 years, The Tamarama Rock Surfers theatre group has been putting on around 12 productions a year, each running for about 4 weeks(from Thursday to Sundays). It’s been a great avenue for young actors and writers to have their work seen by the public in a fantastic location. And for those who just want a drink, there are 2 bars(downstairs and upstairs) with a solid selection of beers and wines(13 beers on tap), so this pub isn’t just about being arty, it’s also a relaxing drinking venue too!

There are several pubs in London where there are small theatres in the back for staging plays. The Old Fitzroy brings the same thing to Sydney. It even looks a lot like a British pub inside: cramped, dark woods, a few tables on the pavement, and it’s wedged in a neighbourhood you might not expect to find a pub in. It’s definitely worth a visit, though. There are great beers on tap, truly colourful regulars, a Thai kitchen in back that does decent laksa, and of course the theatre. It only holds a few dozen people but they put on fun, quirky, professional productions. Great spot.
