Popped into Posto for Sunday morning and was very impressed. It’s a cute little café tucked away at the end of the ‘main strip’ of West End. It’s only teeny tiny with a minimal kitchen but it’s doing an awesome job. You’ll find the breakfast menu is simple — no poached or baked eggs here — but it’s simple done really well. I had the bircher museli and loved it. Perfect consistency and a massive serve! I struggled to finish half of it. Solid coffee. The lady behind the counter who was running the show knows exactly what she’s doing, and seemed to remember everyone’s names and orders. I love it when a café has that we-care-about-our-customers vibe! Will definitely be back!

It’s cafes like this that make West End the eclectic niche suburb that it is. This little gem is the definition of a true local and is my go to Sunday morning haunt of choice. It embodies everything I could want from a café, it is unpretentious and all about the coffee. The proprietor Justine always has a warm greeting and time for a quick chat making you feel instantly at home. The food is simple but delicious; and last but by no means least, the coffee is superb. The coffee beans are sourced from Stefano Manfredi in Sydney and give a beautiful dark rich caramel coloured crema. The flavour is expertly extracted to deliver a warm full bodied flavour that we enjoyed enough to have another. Our default order is a double shot, we do this for two reasons. One, we love strong coffee and Two, its a great acid test to determine the quality of the bean and its barista. When the coffee is strong it can easily take on a clawing astringent taste, and if the milk protiens are not heated properly the milks bead is too large and does not give the coffee the cushioning creaminess it needs. None of these finer points are lost here at Posto. Keep it up guys.

Today was a morning where I truly relied on the power of Unilocal. At 6am, in West End, searching for breakfast, I put Unilocal to work. Searching for somewhere open that would serve breakfast at 6am. Posto was the closest option that came up and it delivered. The interior isn’t a curated snapshot of hipster-riche and the breakfast menu is simple at one page. There’s no stress over decision of «what to have» because of this. I opted for a flat white and the avocado on sourdough with a side of bacon. The sourdough was so soft and fresh, the bacon crunchy and crisp. Against the«mushy» avocado, my migraine brain was less foggy with each bite. West End, I hope you know what you’ve got in this local café. If I lived closer it may have a chance of becoming my local.

There’s something to be said for simplicity. A freshly-squeezed OJ, a simple brekky of haloumi, tomato and avocado on sourdough, and a delicious cup of Genovese coffee. I’ve never strayed from my order here, and despite there being months between visits(my bad), Justine rarely forgets it — but checks it with me first, calling through the window with her awesome Northern accent. The menu item’s had a name change — what was once Haloumi Special has become Lucky Lucky, and I understand why. You’re lucky if you stumble across this place, and even luckier if you settle on this menu item. I’d like to try some of the other things on the menu, because they all look pretty good, but… I just can’t say no to Lucky Lucky.

Posto is one of the newer cafes that has popped up in one of the quieter areas of West End just away from the highly caffeinated and bustling Boundary Street strip. Aesthetically, it’s an understated café with the most notable feature being the bicycle that hangs above diner’s heads on the main wall. Posto is a bare minimum café that puts all of its energy and focus into one thing: producing exceptionally good coffee. In a suburb that is renowned for housing great coffee, Posto stands out as la crème of la crème of cafes just on the merit of its coffee alone. Of the newer cafes in West End, Posto provides the type of personal, homely service that keeps you coming back for more, in contrast to the overly surly barista service that some other hipster ridden cafes in the area are known for. I’ve always trusted in cafes brimming to the door with customers as a sure sign that I’m onto a good thing, and Posto is no exception. From the cyclists that arrive in the first few minutes of its opening, to those who charge in just before closing to get their fifth coffee of the day, Posto has always got their grinder running. If sitting in a small café is a little too claustrophobic for some, they have an alfresco area that opens up onto Boundary Street which allows for people watching, adding another appealing layer to the already impressive café experience. The only possible criticism is only slight: Posto is not celebrated for it’s food. While it is reasonably priced, it is humble in both quality and quantity. The strengths of Posto lie in it’s exceptional coffee and service, both of which are consistently provided by charismatic owner, Justine. All in all, Posto is a real gem in a locale teaming with great places to get your caffeine hit.
