Usually quite consistent… tonight’s thali was luke warm! rice was a bit undercooked. But one thing that remains … the eggplant curry is amazing!

Rich Maha is a small and often crowded restaurant that serves traditional Malaysia and South Indian style food. Their curries here are very authentic and packed full of spicy and robust flavors. Rich Maha is a run down, old and ugly looking restaurant, the chairs and tables are cheap and wobble, and the whole place doesn’t look very well maintained in general, this doesn’t stop the hordes of people from dining here though. Rich Maha offers 1 thing, very tasty food at a very good price. They have a large variety of curries here, each with different flavors and bases — I would say most people here come and order a variety of curries with a side of roti. They offer a lot of other traditional dishes too, such as Nasi Lemak and Curry Laksa. I really enjoyed the food here, but will probably order takeaway next time because I feel like the dining area is dirty and too crowded.

My hubby introduced me to this place a few years ago. It’s a really busy little shop, but it’s cheap, and it’s convenient to get to, especially if I’ve been shopping at the supermarket and can’t be bothered cooking. There’s always some fragrant curries in the front of the shop which just makes you salivate at the idea of grabbing something to take away. Sometimes I’ll grab a butter chicken or a chicken ’65, and I’m always pleased by my choice. They do a good roti too, and it’s interesting to watch them being made. The kitchen is pretty open, so you can see what’s going on, and I enjoy watching the comings and goings of the fairly large staff for a shop of its size. It’s also pretty cheap. I like it a lot.

Rich Maha was one of the first shops to open in Vermont South to offer takeaway Southern and Southeast Asian takeaway meals at really reasonable prices. It has become a very successful shop in recent years, to the point where not only did it take over the shop next door for floor space so that it could accommodate the masses of customers, but also opened a grocery store on the other side. This success is for good reason. The food is excellent, especially for the money. Many of the main dishes are around $ 12 to $ 14, which when you combine with some coconut rice and a plain naan, results in a tasty meal for two for less than $ 20. The service is good, but if you’re just grabbing take away, phone your order in. The queues can be long during busy times. If you’re after a cheap lunch, grab a roti canai with dhals and curry sauce. For $ 4, you can’t go wrong.
