I’m an American tourist who was in Brisbane last month visiting my daughter who attends school at UQ. Wanting to see Australia and needing an adventure at the same time, I decided to go on a bike tour while the daughter was studying for upcoming exams. I was on campus several times and visited this shop. I hadn’t brought my bike with me to Australia, so I spent quite a bit of time talking with the store personnel about a new bike and my plans once I had the bike. They all cycle tour as well and had a lot of information about the route I wanted to take(Brisbane to Sydney along the coast). Once the bike was selected and outfitted they put everything together for me and threw a few things in for good measure. They added things to my repair kit that I wouldn’t have remembered myself like a couple of spokes and a tire boot. After everything was put together and I was ready to go, Jeremy sat down with me and wrote out several route options based on his experience from cycle touring to Sydney. He made suggestions that were invaluable and checked on my progress while I was en-route. He also found a bike shop in Sydney and called ahead to alert them that I would need the bike packed for a flight back to the states and then emailed me the contact information. The service in this shop is extraordinary. This is just something we don’t find very often anymore. It is indeed very old fashioned service. They believe in going the extra mile and I was treated as if I were going to be a customer for life. By the way, I cycled a total of 616 miles(991 km) in about two weeks. Everything along the coast was beautiful and I would never have seen it all had I not been on a bike. Australia is the world’s best kept secret.

This place seems good, even though I’ve never had much to do with bicycles. I have been to a few in Brisbane, dragged there by friends, and this doesn’t appear to be as glitzy as some. The guys who work here are nice, especially Gavin, who is willing to explain even the tiniest insight to someone who doesn’t know anything about bikes. He went through the bicycle lights and helmets with real patience. This is a bit of an old fashioned place with old fashioned ideas about business. They take your first name when your bike is given a service and they’re good at getting the repair done on time. All in all a pretty good experience.

I never had the chance to learn how to ride a bicycle in my childhood. Both my older brother and sister did, but back then I was still too young and only on the training wheels. Unfortunately, our house was flooded and the bikes sadly did not survive… It was at this point that a shop like The Bike Shop would have come in handy. The Bike Shop is on campus at the University of Queensland, St Lucia, hidden in the Student Union Complex near On a Roll Bakery and the Copy Shop. Now obviously, I don’t own or ride a bike but I have many friends that do. The Bike shop not only sells bikes but also accessories(since we all need a helmet) and does repairs and services. For the masses of uni students that ride, this Bike Shop is conveniently located. Whether you are a fitness freak, love the planet or are just too poor to buy a car or pay for parking, the Bike Shop will come in handy.
