The chef here is turning out unique food, with flavour and texture amped to the max. The personable young lady on the Marzocco knows her craft as well. You can find equally good and different espresso in many places around Melbourne now, and I’m as big a coffee bigot as the next Melbournian, but she gets every bit of goodness out of the Atomica beans. A happy place. Zero pretension. The music is always just right. The veggie breakfast and the eggy bread are my favourites. Someday I’ll make it in for the lunch menu, which looks equally creative. This is the best place I’ve found at this end of High Street. Haven’t tried them all, but I may not need to, if these guys stay on the tools. There is nothing here that is an afterthought or perfunctory. Everything demonstrates an informal but professional attention to detail and quality. Thornbury is becoming quite the place.

I’ve taken to dropping by Crunch on my way to the morning train from time to time for a quick coffee. They are a coffee focused kind of café that have a limited menu of fresh(as the name suggests) and delicious food available. There are heaps of veggie and vegan options here for breakie and they do killer light kind of snacks and cakes also. Recently, in the local rag, this place was pointed out by an irate mother who had been asked to leave the café due to her screaming child. There will be a backlash about this, which will entail local mothers boycotting the place. I couldn’t be happier about this and want to congratulate the guy for actually improving the atmosphere in his café through refusing to allow one customer(two if you count the kid) to spoil the breakfasts and coffees(which for many to have out is a special treat) of the other patrons. Kids scream, it’s true. If your kid is screaming in a confined space, take them outside and calm them down. I’m more likely to drop by for a coffee and a snack knowing that I won’t be subjected to tantruming children.
