Lots of beer types but no one interested or able to explain, and all the ones I tried seemed to be fruity beers, lots of flies due to open window no fly screen, dark and dingy, no bar snacks Friday night, pretty sad crowd. From outside looks like Australia’s worst pub with zero Character, same inside. Not quirky, not bohemian, just plain crappy, befitting of the crappy location. Adelaide now has moved on, this place hasn’t. I love country pubs, I love The Austral, The Exeter you name it but the only good thing about this place is the name. Go to the Gov or anywhere else if in the area.

Now when it comes to going out for a night in town, I have never been a club girl. I have worked and ran clubs and cocktail bars. So maybe that is why I prefer to go to venues where I can actually hear my friends talking. Also, I like to avoid the whole fashion club thing. If I am letting my hair down after a big week of work, you will find me here. I am a lover of beer and whiskey. In particular I love to sample the vast selection of craft beers at hand these days. The Wheaty is the best combination of all of my loves. This venue suits the pub girl in me. I can sit and relax on a comfy couch and enjoy quality beers and whiskey with my mates. And best of all, I don’t have to worry about being hassled. The Wheaty has three different areas to check out. The main bar area is set up simply with some chairs and couches. You can wonder up to the bar and be overwhelmed with variety. But don’t worry, the Wheaty staff are lovely and will help guide you to your selection. Whether it is beer, whiskey or wine. These guys know what they are talking about. The beer on tap for those who are interested, changes frequently. So if you are a lover(like me) of trying the difference between tap and bottled beer, this is the place where you can do that. The Wheaty are big supporters of craft brewers and make an effort to showcase a variety and changes their stock often. The biggest asset to the Wheaty is that they are also very talented mirco brewers. It is worth tasting what they have to offer. All brews are very interesting and complex on that palate. In the past they have had special brewing and tasting nights. Worth attending if you are interested. Final thing to say about the beverage, is check out the impressive selection of Whiskey. There is a board on display on the back bar. Very handsome choices of top single malt and peaty Islay blends. Yum! The beer garden is very comfortable and great for groups. If only there was more space. It get’s packed on the weekends. So be sure to get a good spot. The back area is commonly used for gigs and functions. Be sure to go check out some local acts there. This back area is also used through the Adelaide Fringe for performing arts. Be sure to check the guide each year to see what is featured at the Wheaty. Enough said. I think that have given a convincing argument that this is the best pub in town!

I was a little hesitant at first visiting this place because it had a reputation that people of my gender were generally not welcome. In fact when I suggested to my friend that we come here for a drink he positively freaked out. However, those days seem to have long gone because the Wheatsheaf is now purely a craft-beer bar. In fact the only beer that they serve is craft beer. None of that Carlton Draught or West End Export here(and don’t think about getting a Coopers Pale Ale either). The other thing about the place, other than the cool beer garden of course, is that it is also a live band venue, though I haven’t had much of a chance to visit many live bands in recent times(which is something that I will have to change). I still remember when a young lady invited me here for a drink a couple of years ago — I politely turned it down thinking that it was a trap.

The Wheaty has a well deserved reputation as a much-loved venue for beer lovers, to those who just love whittling away the day in beer gardens.(Check it out: only 5 star reviews so far!) Love the feeling of walking up to a pub bar and being confronted with a beer tap menu that needs a few minutes to read over and contemplate, and of course you have to try a Wheaty brewed beer… or all of them… over a cosy afternoon in the courtyard couches. Results were mixed(loved the Rye, a few others too watery or bitter for my tastes) but there’s definitely something for all beer tastes here — you just have to find your match(the staff are usually cool about giving a taste if you’re stuck between two options before you buy). With an eclectic clientele, the people watching only just beats the rotating artwork that adorns the walls as a visual treat. Another pub I wish was my own local(Alas, I just have to appreciate it when I’m there…)

5 stars every time, visit after visit, year after year, hour after hour. The Wheatsheaf is an Adelaide Icon that we’re blessed to call our own. It fills up with all sorts of folk, all happy to share a table or couch near the fire. There is no dress code, no judgement, no cool kids, everyone here is united in a love for the space, and that makes everyone cool, from kiddies to grandmas!

Hidden within The Barton is this atmospheric alternative pub! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and interesting locals. We really enjoy going there for a great night from time to time… being a little older… we can talk to each other without yelling!

Great brews, awesome music and a sweet atmosphere, what’s not to like about The Wheaty?! I mostly find myself here when going to see a particular band or musician and let me tell you if I were a bit closer I’d frequent far more often. The fact that The Wheaty is different from other hotels is what makes it so great. They have an incredibly good range of craft beers, cider and wine on offer as well as music practically every night. You’re not going to find meals and or pokies here,(which in my opinion is actually a great thing!) Staff are always friendly and welcoming, even to newcomers who might find the unfamiliarity of no recognisable beverage names a bit daunting! Whether you’re dropping in here simply to enjoy a few drinks or to see a band or musician, there’s no doubt that you’ll have a great time!

If you’re looking for good music and good beer, look no further! The Wheaty is the place to be! I love to hang out here on a Sunday afternoon, sampling the latest offering from the food trucks outside and working my way through the unique and extensive beer list. The staff at the Wheaty are not your average — you’ll find an eclectic, hipster-y, drink passionate group who are ready to enthusiastically suggest something new for you if you ask. The Wheatsheaf only serves minimal snacks in the way of cheese platters, but they are happy to let you bring in food from any of the surrounding establishments — and as mentioned they team up with various food trucks — an affordable and delicious option. If it’s good music you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. From ukuleles to accordions it’s all represented in the Wheaty’s back music shed. You’ll often find that Sunday afternoons offer free music too, so you can relax and be entertained for the price of your drinks(which are well priced too)! Look out for their sales on every now and then — glass and ceramics, art, and vinyl are top of the list. If you’re really passionate about your beer, download their app for notification of when a new brew goes on tap. It’s also handy for looking up what bands are playing and other events coming up. Definitely plan a visit to the Wheaty at least once — I would wager that you will be back again before too long!

I would have driven past the Wheatsheaf hundreds of times when I used to live West and cut through George street into town, last night was the first time I’d been inside. We went for a friends birthday party and the night was a huge hit. Firstly the bar staff were lovely, no 18 year olds serving you with a big side of malice/begrudging attitude. I heard multiple recommendations made to people querying the wine and beer list(s) and the dozen people we went with didn’t have a bad drink between them. A friend worked through most of the categories on the beer list. Ending up on the 8 Wired stout with 10% alcohol content, brutal. The 8 wired lager was really fresh and crisp too. It’s actually refreshing to go into a place that claims they serve boutique brews and not see the bog standard Vale Ale/Moo Brew/Little Creatures list paraded out. There’s a big, big selection here that I couldn’t even begin to scrape on. The wines by the glass were excellent too. They had a good selection of reds covered and the options changed regularly from the look of the board. A Bleasdale sparking shiraz was sweet and a good opener, sticks Pinot Noir was light and fruity, Alpha Box & Dice sangiovese blend was really easy to drink. The Torbreck Shiraz was a bit too much by the time I got around to on the end of the rest. The open fireplaces are incredible on a cold winter night. Sitting around with a group of 6 people as the night wound down was so relaxing. There’s no TV blaring, no football or cricket crowd; just good drinks and conversation, no crowds, easy bar access, and warm belly-tingling coziness. They’ll provide a pizza takeaway list if you want to order in, or possibly hunt down a food van outside. I’d rather a place do drinks exceptionally well than try to run a kitchen on top, offsetting the food cost/waste with inflated drinks prices. The pints of some brews here are some $ 3 – 4 cheaper than what you’d regularly find as a result. That’s a big win in my book. Ignore the outer shell of the hotel and head in, you won’t be dissapointed.

It’s a Sunday night and this unassuming looking pub is feverishly electric inside. Thick rimmed glasses, beards and flannel shirts are dotted in every corner, from the dimly lit bar to the stylishly designed beer garden and the cosy nook by the fire where 10 hipsters are playing some a game — probably Battleships just to be ironic. If you’re a beer novice like me, you too will probably glaze over like a deer in headlights when you fail to identify a Coopers or Tooheys logo on tap or in fridge behind the bar. But do not fear, ask to be surprised or tell the bartenders what you have enjoyed in the past — they may laugh at you or they may not, either way you’re guaranteed to end up with a pint of golden, dark, amber, brown or stouty goodness in your hand. Notice I didn’t mention the extensive wine list — I’m sorry, we didn’t get that far as after 2 beers(7 and 9% strength) we were pretty content. As everyone has said, the only food they currently serve is cheese platters. I have heard rumours of more food coming but I don’t think they need to bother. With regular food truck appearances from Little Big Cheese Co and Phat Buddha you can turn up and get a different meal every afternoon. If you have a man’s hunger like me though you would be hard pressed to find a better pizza south of West Tce than a takeaway crispy, gourmet one from The Deli across the road. And you don’t have to hide your dinner under your flannel shirt either — the Wheaty encourages you to bring in food as it would be a sacrilege to have a slice of beer in one hand without a craft brew in the other!

I’m always bagging hipsters, but I think it’s partially because I fear I am one. Wheatsheaf is a great place for hipsters and people from all sorts of crowds alike. The beer is GOOD. If you are looking to get drunk for cheap this is not the place for you. They have a range of beer on tap. Moo brew is one of my favourites. And the value for money 9% golden beer delicious. They currently don’t do food(although I think they have been saying currently for a while). But they don’t mind you bringing food in. Which for me means delicious nachos from the deli. And sometimes the people at the deli are son nice they’ll bring them over for you. But that’s a whole different review. There is often live music at the Wheatsheaf it ranges from blue grass, to rockabilly, and many more. It is usually at a good level so you can still hear people. Occasionally it is free too! if not, you can sit in the beergarden and hear it for free anyhow. Other bonuses. Parking out back if you’re early. It’s close to town without having to go into town. The bar staff are super friendly and lastly there are plenty of couches to sit back and enjoy the music on, as well as tables, because who likes standing. not me.

I’ve been going to the Wheatsheaf for years as I’m lucky enough for it to be my local pub. I love the atmosphere of the pub, it’s very laid back on Sunday afternoons and chatty and busy at night when you are looking for a bit of a buzz. The selection of beers on tap is great and I like how they change so often that each time I’m there, I need to really think about which one I am going to select.

If you care about beer, like to hear about what you drink and would rather sample and enjoy a few different ales than a skinful of cheap lager than this is your kind of place. No food, no pokies, no bollocks. Just incredible beer, great atmosphere and generally a clientele that appreciates a good pint. Jade could tell you the life story of each and every beer that gets poured in this establishment and the people serving you a drink ACTUALLYCARE about matching you and your mood to the right beer. If that wasn’t enough the live music is of a high standard too. The best advise I can give is stop reading this and go to the Wheatsheaf instead.

The beer selection is outstanding! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction of the flavours you’re after and there’s a very laid back vibe here. The beer garden is great for warmer days and the back area is where the bands are. I wish they did food, but they don’t care if you order pizzas and have them delivered, which is great as you can stay there and have more beer!

Contrary to popular opinion this really isn’t ‘A Lesbian Bar.’ It’s a pub where heaps of people hang out, have a good time, drink beer and catch awesome live music and fringe shows, and pay no attention to people’s sexual orientation. The Wheaty ain’t heavy; it’s a place for chillers and people who like local music. It’s also across from The Deli so you can eat their delicious pizzas once you’ve hit your beer limit. I’ve caught some great music and comedy shows here; I love the fairy-lit intimate little stage and backyard furniture for the audience. The Wheaty supports local artists: go and show your support for the Wheaty.

When I walked into the Wheatsheaf I felt like I had been transported to outback Australia. A lot of corrugated iron, an outdoor ‘tin shed’ and the patrons fitted a similar description. This setting was increased by the fact that it was sweltering hot, and sitting outside in the ‘tin’ area provided little relief from the heat. The second thing I noticed was the beer taps. They were amazing. One of them looked like a long ice-cream stick and the other one was literally a grave with skulls. I doubt you could find beer taps like this anywhere else in Adelaide. There is a large selection of wines, beers and ciders. However, preferring a beer or cider there was little I had consumed before. This is not a bad thing, I don’t mind being pushed out of my comfort zone and being forced to taste something unfamiliar. I settled on a strange sounding cider and sat outside, sweating onto the leather stools. It seems at 3pm on a Wednesday, not many people inhabit the Wheatsheaf, but after chatting to the bar staff I discovered large crowds congregate on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Sunday afternoons when a range of live music is played.

The Wheaty is a wonderful example of a traditional hotel, minus the food. It’s atmosphere is all about dark wood surfaces, traditional beverages, an live, alternative and experimental music. It’s atmosphere is unique to itself, in that it feels old and well-worn, while at the same time doing something new and different that few other pubs do. We go here most fortnightly Monday nights to see the COMA performances — Creative Original Music Adelaide. They pack out the covered courtyard at the back with people come to enjoy jazz and experimenting. The bar has a great selection of different types of cider, with several local names, including Adelaide Hill’s cider as well as Lobo and Napoleon, two other Australian ciders. The only odd thing about the Wheaty is that it doesn’t do food, however, they’re more than happy to let you order in pizza and have it delivered to the courtyard, which we regularly take advantage of. It’s great to have a local hotel supporting so much local live music, and the atmosphere here is always fantastic.

The Wheatsheaf is nicer than nice — cosy fireplaces, a beer garden and a band room where local acts play. The Wheatie is on my ride home from the city, on the corner of George St, and especially in winter I like to stop by for an afternoon beer on Sundays. The crowd is a little older than myself, but not ancient old. This is probably because the Wheatsheaf is so good — older people are better at figuring out what is not rubbish. The Wheatsheaf is home to all old(and young) people who still like to socialise with their friends, but don’t want to socialise with strangers until 4am. Parents with children are welcome, as are all people of different sexualities. So other than the people, why is the Wheatie good? For a start, they have a great beer list. My personal favourite is the Lobethal Chocolate Stout. It’s the kind of beer I’d go as far as to call ‘silky’. There is no pokies, instead there is a thriving band room that hosts both veteran indie performers and up-and-coming local musicians. This is the kind of place that peaks with huge crowds on a Sunday afternoon — not in the wee hours.
