There is something magic about Alpha video.
I have been going through there for years and somehow I always find something to watch which I haven’t seen, and it certainly never comes from the new release department.
The huge old school dvd warehouse is full of rare and wonderful movies. There are lots of foreign and arthouse type stuff, including, last time I was there, a good deal of Almodovar’s early stuff, which is very punk rock and with prectically no production budget and absolutely amazing.
I also managed to find the entire monkey magic series there, which made for a three day lock in.

Alpha isn’t quite as retro as it used to be. Gone is the second hand clothing section, gone are the miles and miles of VHS, gone are the shelves of cigarettes for sale at the front counter. The overall vibe remains the same though, Alpha is the ‘That 70’s Show’ of DVD hire. The old warehouse doesn’t have air conditioning, but the raised ceilings do make for great acoustics. If the staff are playing something good on the stereo you’re gonna know about it upon entry.
Alpha are so darn cheap! $ 1.95 for weeklies, $ 2.95 for new releases and the price goes to a get out of town weekend price of $ 3.95. They have thorough categorising here, with DVD sections such as Animé Manga and Movie Buff. They also have an excellent selection of lollies and old school movie posters. At night this place can feel a little creepy. Would make an excellent set for a zombie film. And it’s also an excellent place to hire a zombie film. Zombie win.
