Shin Tokyo

Shin Tokyo has treated me well over the years in getting video games before release dates, cheaper prices, and all round nice place to chill during a town trip.
I’ve bought models, manga, and games here. I’ve never had to deal with any confusion with the staff about what I was searching for. The range DVD set boxes is extensive and you’ll always find something new to take a gander at.
They are closely affiliated with many Animé/​Videogame events, check them out at AVCon for cheaper buys and obscure stuff.
One thing that always stays constant here is not the brilliant staff nor the great collection of music. It’s the Evangelion school outfit they’ve had on display for the past three years, once I saw a sweaty glassed fellow asking about it.

Finally, a sanctuary for animé and manga geeks! I’m not ashamed to say that I’m hugely into manga and Japanimation, and I for one am glad that we no longer have to scour the internet (legally and illegally) to get our comic book fix. Reading comics on a computer screen really sucks, and thankfully lovers of graphic novels no longer have to resort to this desperation.
Shin Tokyo has a HUGE range of Japanese graphic novels, collectibles, video games and cosplay outfits catering to many genres. They have everything from the classics like Akira to recent groundbreakers like Death Note. If owning the books or the movies just simply don’t cut it, and you need to express your fandom on a whole new level, then this shop is the place to go to get models to line your shelves and cosplay outfits to earn you some bragging rights. Chances are if you’re looking for it, they’ll have it.
Of course, as much of their stock is imported, shopping at Shin Tokyo can get a little pricey. But with any book or DVD, there are going to be a number of different editions. Sometimes different editions will have different translations and extras; and if you’re anything like me, getting the right edition can be a real pain in the ass on the internet. Being able to browse the books and movies, and knowing exactly what you’re getting, is a huge bonus.

I’m very much into animé, manga, and video games.
And they sell just about everything there is do with all of them (as well as animé, manga, and video game paraphernalia and costumes).
I’ve probably spent thousands of dollars here on box sets, t-​shirts, and mangas.
I have the entire collection of Dragon Ball Z, Deathnote, and Bleach thanks to these guys.
When you make your first purchase I suggest you ask for a membership card, you get discounted prices and members only specials.

I’m a nerd. I admit it, it’s really no secret. I love my animé and video games and Shin Tokyo caters to both interests in a big way.
Each series that is covered has its own place in the store. Whether it be Dragonball, Inu Yasha, Naruto or one of the other big names in animé you’ll find something here. They stock action figures, statues, manga and DVDs. This is where they’re better than your normal animé stockist.
You see, the primary supplier of animé in Australia is a company called Madman. I’ve had some very unfortunate dealings with the company to the point where I refuse to buy any product made by them. This means I can’t buy animé in Australia. Shin Tokyo stock North American Region 1 DVDs though and they’re the only place I know of who do. Aside from my issues with Madman, I believe that if something was filmed in NTSC then you’re doing it a disservice viewing it in PAL. There’s another reason to buy region 1 DVDs! Yes they’re far more expensive than you’ll buy them for online, but the same could be said about almost anything in the store.
In the middle of the store you have a significant video game area. You can uncover some series gems here, including sealed copies of Playstation 2 and Gameboy Advance games. The problem is that I bought some and I can’t bring myself to unseal them…
At the back you have the manga and model section. If you like your mech manga, or maybe you want to start a bit of a modeling project, this is the section of the store you’ll likely head towards.
One final thing, if you love old school Transformers then you MUST visit Shin Tokyo!

I cried a little when this store opened, little salty tears of joy. You see, I am into Animé and Manga in a big way, and I have always in the past read my manga (and watched my animé) for free online… but why would I do that when I could buy it at a local store for a moderately expensive price?
Anywho, I haven’t actually bought anything from Shin, but I like to browse there often and look at all of the pretty manga volumes and little plastic models and ‘cosplay’ from all of my favourite series.
Shin does have a great selection, and stocks all of the popular titles and brands, but they can be a little pricey in comparison to buying the same online (but this can be said for most things). However, if you really need a Hidden Leaf Head Band because you are late for a mission or beacuse your girlfriend has confiscated your other one because she is embarrassed that you wear it in public, Shin Tokyo can fully hook you up!

Shin Tokyo! If you’re a japanese animé and manga nerd then this is the place to go to in Adelaide. Situated on the lower ground floor of Rundle Mall Plaza, Shin Tokyo is part of what I like to call nerd central. Right beside it is EB Games where you can hang out, browse and play video games and directly opposite is JB Hi-​fi which is a great place to walk through so you can absorb that aroma of fresh tech just waiting to be yours.
In Shin Tokyo, they have pretty much anything you can think of to fulfill your japanese animé and manga nerd needs (sorry guys, no maids serving at the counter yet — I think). You can buy a limited selection of costumes for cosplay and they have a good selection of animé in blu-​ray and DVDs. They have paper back manga (japanese comics) that you can purchase, video games and consoles, collectibles and so on.
While personally I’m not much for purchasing comics and animé in store (I normally buy these online), I always find myself browsing through their t-​shirts and hoodies. The last thing I bought from them was this red hoodie that had an insignia from the animé «Bleach». At the time, I thought it was the coolest thing and I still wear it from time to time. The staff there are friendly and helpful and I enjoy walking through the place mainly to browse and take in the atmosphere of the place.
