Having been a ‘gym junkie’ and instructor for more years than I’m prepared to admit; I have seen a lot of gyms. Re-Creation is a fairly large facility with three studios, spin room, stretch room, cardio area, weights area and crèche. The equipment and layout is updated regularly. It can get fairly busy at peak times but there seems to be plenty of equipment to go round. There are lots of steppers and treadmills — which have a view out the window. Staff are friendly and not ‘meat heads’ like some places. Recently converted to 24⁄7 operation with members able to access the facilities outside of staffed times using a keyfob(available at additional cost).

I’ve checked out a few gyms in Melbourne now and had a few sessions at Re Creation South Melbourne whilst staying nearby. As far as gyms go, it’s in a good location if you can walk or drive(street parking plus a parking building) and has a supermarket below it. The weights floor is a good size and there is a mix of free weights and machine weights. I found it pretty busy in the free weights area after work(in fact the whole gym was heaving) but a friend goes before work and aparently its not too busy. The cardio machines are in a row above the weights area, some have a view of the street but others are looking at the wall which I find pretty boring. I’ve been to better cardio areas with a more motivating feel. The spin studio looks pretty impressive, during classes the room is darkened and there is a UV lit scene behind the instructor. They have a pretty comprehensive timetable for classes. There is also a crèche so this might suit people with kids. It feels like the kind of gym which is good for the average gym goer who is looking for the best of a few different worlds(classes, cardio, weights) rather than someone who is looking for a specialty facility.

The South Melbourne branch of Re-Creation Health Clubs is a moderately sized gym catering to both men and woman of all ages. Complete with three separate studio rooms used mainly for classes as well as a dedicated weights area and cardio centre the health club has some good equipment and great group classes. The layout of he gym seems to be a poor use of the space. The weights area is right in the middle of the club and is quite large, with the cardio machines being up the stairs and off to the side making them all a little too squashed together. They do however offer a very large range of classes and with three studio rooms there is always something on from beginners pilates to advanced spin cycle classes. Re-Creation also have personal training available, both male and female trainers at varying packages depending on session length and frequency.
