Perfect spot for breakfast, fantastic coffee and egg and bacon focaccia. The view is sensational.

This place is now called ‘The Kiosk’, and was taken over by new owners in December 2012. I came here during the week, after going for a walk during my lunch break. I ordered a soy latte(delicious!), made with fair trade coffee. Owners were very friendly, and created a nice environment. Clientele were mainly surfers and beach-goers … but I imagine that weekends would be very busy here. Apparently the old café used to close for half the year, but the new owners are going to experiment with keeping it open all year round, which will be fabulous! Small, but nice, selection of cakes, lunches and breakfasts here — I think I’ve just found my new local! ;)

This is a fantastic spot to enjoy a coffee, a light meal or a cool beverage on a summers day, followed by a beach walk in the summer. Or even a quick dip in the water. It is also best enjoyed among its outdoor seating area, which is directly and literally above the beach front, showing off beautiful and paramodic views. The Somerton Life Saving Club is also a fantastic setting for functions, and the club in general is home to a respectable community devoted to protecting the safety of those visiting the beach.

This family friendly café is nice and relaxed and is in a stunning location. With no neighbouring properties, all you can hear is the buzz of fellow diners or the odd exclamation of joy from nearby beach goers. GREATSMOOTHIES, GENEROUSFOOD The smoothies here are excellent, the strawberry smoothie in particular. It’s so refreshing and really fruity. I had a pleasant zucchini quiche with sweet potato and sundried tomato there, with salad as an extra. The cooks were very generous with the amount of zucchini slices in the substantial quiche. The salad was basic lettuce, onion, tomato, cucumber and drizzled with slightly too much balsamic vinegar. The staff are really nice and give you one of those buzzing devices to let you know when you’re food is ready, but sometimes it can take a while. If it does they acknowledge the wait and apologise accordingly. I always find good manners endearing. And many people are already in a relaxed frame of mind being at a beachside location, so no one seems to really mind if there is a wait. BABYCHANGETABLE Parents of young children will be pleased to learn there is a table for changing babies’ nappies in one of the toilets at the club.

The Somerton Life Saving Club Café is a great little local café. Situated in a cosy, sheltered spot in front of the Minda home playing fields. The old Surf Club was bulldozed a few years back and the beautifully designed new club was specifically built to include a café and an upstairs restaurant. The café is small inside but they have made the best possible use of space. It has been decked out with corrugated iron and wood to give a trendy beachside feel. The staff are often young adult lifesavers so if you choke on your food you know you are safe! There are two spots to sit and both have a different feel: The outside, side patio area is lovely with concrete planter boxes and views of the playing fields and beach. This is a good little sun trap to shelter when it is windy. The other area is sitting right on the beachfront, sitting up high with amazing views North and South, perfect when the weather is good. The café is situated at a dead end of the esplanade so it isn’t a place you stumble across but it is definitely worth a trip out of the way to get here. The coffee is not great but it is drinkable. They do a really good iced coffee with lots of ice cream and serve a great range of healthy savoury food. My favourite here is the sweetcorn and fetta fritters. They also do fresh wraps and the more traditional pies, pasties, hotdogs and milkshakes.
