One of my friends warned me there was a grumpy waitress at the Duchess as we approached for my first visit. «Does she make the coffees?» I asked, hopefully, as I’ve historically found that angry baristas often make delicious brews. Sadly, my friend wasn’t sure and I didn’t think to observe who made it. The Duchess is a Ladies Who Lunch /Young Family Outing venue. A few uni students drop in, too, due to proximity to campus – though I expect that their parents are paying for their meals. The standard menu at the Duchess doesn’t blow my socks off, though I was keen to eat the cornbread special that was on the board the day of our visit. It was ok. I’ve had better.

This location has so much promise! And the food is so ordinary. We arrived around one and the restaurant was packed with ladies. It’s that kind of place. The menu is not overly large and reads well. Unfortunately, I didn’t eat the menu. I had a potato cake stacked with smoked salmon and a poached egg. Sounded good. To my mind, a potato cake should be soft in the middle and crispy on the outside. In this case, the cake was about 4 cm thick, soggy on the outside, and stodgy in the middle. The poached egg was undercooked to the point that the white was still clear and runny in parts. Eeeew. My friend’s sandwich was … meh. Not enough to draw her back for a second visit. The hot chocolate was not hot. Or chocolate enough to make me want to finish it. But we were comp’d for the drinks. Staffing was sparse. Meh.
