Looks like a typical Vietnamese restaurant, plain floor, simple tables and chairs, décor is mismatched. The phở soup broth was very clear and delicious

If you want a cheap, filling and reasonably good Vietnamese meal, add Thy Thy to your options. It offers a wide selection of dishes, which we shared in our group of 6. to start with we had the seafood spring rolls, and chicken spring rolls. Although they came out piping hot, those dishes did not last long and were quickly devoured in their deliciousness. The salty fried chicken ribs were even better than I envisioned. There was a beef dish(which unfortunately the name escapes me — it could’ve been the black bean beef) that was just amazing. You could not go wrong with the combination vegetables and chilli squid. All in all, it is a decent option, especially to feed the masses. Take heed though as they do not split the bill.

It’s not a place that screams incredible décor and trend setting style but with the price in mind it’s okay! As I was saying the price is cheap, which cheap can be nasty but not always! The food portions are huge! Like out of 4 of us none of us completely finished our meals! It was tasty and nice the noodle combination soup was indulgent, I mean the combination had seafood, beef, chicken and vegetables. It’s a decadent mix of everything! The San Chou bow was super taste and for $ 4 how could you go wrong! All in all it’s not first date material and it’s not for a fancy meal but it will fill you and you’ll leave satisfied!

There’s nothing more for me to say other than this is the best Vietnamese EVER. They have the best rice paper rolls and the best spring rolls and many more. I have been going here since I was young and will continue to go to thy thy until the phở runs dry which I hope will never come to be.

Honestly, this place rules. I’ve only been about four times, but it’s been excellent every time. My friends are all massive fans and there’s really not much to like. It’s not a looker this place, but that doesn’t really matter when you can bring in your own booze, the food is cheap and delicious, and the staff are incredibly friendly. They also do a birthday«cake» which is a banana covered in dough and fried. It looks like a huge… ummm…phallic shaped object when it arrives at the lucky birthday diners table. Order anything… I assure you it will be tasty. My favs are the lemon chicken and any of the fried rice dishes. As a bonus, to me, I live fairly close to Thy Thy so it’s never a struggle to get here for a Vietnamese fix. It’s also a great place to bring friends and have a little dinner gathering… and remember… always…to BYOB!

The service here was a little slow… Probably because I like to eat my beef phở at inappropriate o’clock in the afternoon(aka 3pm). When the food came out it was delicious! The broth was light and tasty the noodles werent too sloppy and my phở came with a mountain of fresh bean sprouts, chilli and basil. The guys here did split credit card bills which I would have thought was unheard of on Victoria Street. :)

After a long run along the Yarra with my lovely girlfriend, I was tempted to search for a nice Vietnamese place. A little sweaty and a lot of hungry, I looked on Unilocal to search for Bahn Mi… Apparently Bahn Mi isn’t as popular along Victoria street as other cities I’ve lived in(Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco), but I realize that they are more likely offered as lunch or a snack, rather than dinner. No worries, and so I went with the highest rated restaurant on Unilocal(that was open at 7PM on a Wednesday). The restaurant was nice enough! It definitely was NOT dingy as I expected. Thy Thy looked freshly painted and renovated, with a flat screen TV playing SBS One and being about half full. We were seated promptly and handed menus, as expected. First, no Bahn Mi options… fine, whatever. My lady went for phở with chicken(not listed as phở on the menu, but Thien or something like that). I looked on Unilocal and went for the broken rice with shredded and grilled pork. I’ve never had broken rice and was excited to see what it was all about. We ordered prawn spring rolls to start… because the waiter was hovering over us to make a decision. And it wasn’t in the«i’m here to help you,» way, but more of the«make up your f***‘in mind» demeanor. Prawn spring rolls were fine. Crispy and full of prawn flavor. That was the best part of the night. The Thien and broken rice came out. The shredded pork was processed and mixed in with glass noodles, and being covered in some type of weird beefy-bullion powder… it was not sitting well in my stomach. No tap water was offered, only soft drinks and hot tea. Neither of which we were interested in. And I wasn’t paying $ 3 for bottled water. The«grilled pork» was a small pork chop that was cut halfway into four«slices.» They were still stuck together at the bone, and I couldn’t eat it with a chopstick or a spoon. I ended picking it up with my hands and started gnawing like an animal. Whatever moisture I had ingested was quickly dried up by the broken rice… I was parched and had some of the Thien broth to swallow it. I also had some of my girlfriend’s soup, which was pretty bland, even when I added chilis, then added lemon, then hoisin sauce… nothing really helped. I’d rather pay another dollar or two per dish at the place Van Mai, which is full of flavour, and better service. We both left Thy Thy feeling full(the portions were pretty big) but my stomach was grumbling with what I put in it. To leave a restaurant and feel like you may have food poisoning that night doesn’t warrant more than two stars. Better luck next time, Thy Thy.

I really want to give this establishment four or more stars. As expected on Victoria St, at Thy Thy you’ll receive the most authentic Vietnamese experience in terms of food, ambience and the people that populate the restaurant. Everything here is ridiculously well priced for anyone on a tight budget, the portion sizes are healthy, and they even make legitimate Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk(ca phe da, cà phê sa á, cà phê nâu á) — the sweet elixir of Vietnamese life. After an amazingly enjoyable experience at Thy Thy, I have come back here a few more times for dinner and have been treated well. However, one time I came here just for a coffee and perhaps some dessert at about 8pm on a weeknight, and I was treated absolutely horrible — it was all smiles and pleasantries till we announced that we weren’t after dinner, and immediately they took menus and tea away from us telling us that they«can’t help us» and instructing us to get out if we weren’t ordering any mains. This confrontational and hostile experience really dampened my great thoughts on this restaurant, and instead we went to one of the other countless Vietnamese restaurants down the street that were more than happy to accommodate us just for some coffee and a deep fried ice cream. The premise of these experiences is simple: if you’re after a cheap, delicious dinner, Thy Thy is the place to be. If you’re just after some authentic Vietnamese coffee and dessert, stay far, far away.

It’s like stepping in to Asia, make shift tables pink walls but looks deceive… Great, fresh food, fun buzzing atmosphere. Be sure to book for dinner as can be quite busy. If there for a birthday ask the waiter for a birthday special will bring a smile to the birthday persons face. Cheap eats, spring rolls are a must :-)

Victoria Street: worth the junkies for the awesome Vietnamese food. Now my normal gauge of how good a viet place is largely rests with how dingy it is, usually the cruddier the décor, the fresher the mint leaves, but after trying a few of the more rough and tumble places around, TT is my fave. Decent interiors, great value tasty food. My faves are the pork chop and broken rice, vermicelli and spring rolls and the Phở isn’t as authentic as, say, Footscray, but pretty damn above average nonetheless. Your average meal for 2 will be under $ 30.

I don’t have an addictive personality, I don’t smoke and never thought that I would ever understand why it is that people who do need a cigarette so often. All this changed when I discovered Phở(It is actually pronounced fur). I actually crave this massive bowl of deliciousness, mmm. I love how the slices of meat are sliced so thin that they are put into the hot broth raw and cooked almost instantly, the bean shoots that add a bit of crunch and cool the bowl down just a little bit, the chillies that are so spicy your eyebrows will start to sweat, and the spice of the Vietnamese basil. Everyone has their own little ritual to preparing their Phở, the best way to find out yours is by trial and well it’s not error because any combination is good, just trial. I have to come here at least once a week otherwise I start to tear the wall paper from the walls.

Thy Thy is the epitome of a cheap Vietnamese(yes Vietnamese despite the name) eat on Victoria Street. You could be forgiven for thinking this is a place to avoid from the outside. It’s pretty innocuous. Then when you go up the stairs it looks pretty ropey too. At the top of the stairs you are met with a massive dining room looking like a cafeteria mixed with a tropical island. Whilst it might not be great to look at, the atmosphere is noisy and there are a lot of hungry and happy diners. The food is really cheap and the menu is really big. The service is very quick and it is BYO which is also a must for this kind of cheap it. Let’s be honest. You are spoiled for choice on Victoria Street. Thy Thy is great for groups and their food is delicious. I’ve eaten here a few times and would definitely come back. But I wouldn’t make a special trip of it. I’m going to give it 4 stars for value — flavoursome and cheap but I’m sure it isn’t too different from so many places on Victoria Street in that respect.

Thy Thy is probably my favourite Vietnamese restaurant on Victoria Street. It is no fuss Vietnamese food that is cheap. You will most likely walk by it without realising because Thy Thy is just a door — there is no storefront. Once you enter the door you climb a few stairs into a large second floor. Thy Thy is quite your typical Vietnamese restaurant — large communal tables packed with people. I don’t know if they actually serve phở because I’ve never had it here — phở isn’t very social! You can’t share soup. But all of their other dishes are great! For around $ 16 per person you’re getting a feed. Try their salt and pepper squid or Mongolian beef — yes, I know both aren’t necessarily ‘Vietnamese’, but they taste great here. There’s nothing fancy about this place, but the food is good and well worth it.

OK. I’ll admit it. This place does look a little dodgy. If it were a person you’d cross to the other side of the road if it was walking towards you. But children, you shouldn’t be afraid because up these dark and rickety stairs is some of the best food you’ll get this side of Vietnam. For less than $ 10 you can treat yourself to a massive bowl of vermicelli and maybe even throw in a few decadent spring rolls. Don’t come here expecting fancy service or great food presentation, but you can expect some incredibly delicious flavours and to be full as a state school hat rack by the end. I have been told that I’m a bit of a weird girl, but to be perfectly honest if a man took me here on a date he’d definitely get a pash at the end. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is amazing and you have that secretive, special feeling as you eat that you may have just found some where terrific. TIP: Bring a 6 pack or a bottle of wine(or both) as this place is BYO.

If you have tried Phở before you’ll be familiar with how delicious this noodle broth really is. Rice noodles, stock, bean shoots, mint, chilli, beef or chicken and a whole lotta flavour. Phở is on of the most filling meals you can have. Thy Thy is one of the best places in Melbourne to get some authentic Phở for a very low price. For $ 7 you can have an enormous bowl with sliced beef and a side plate full of bean shoots, herbs, chilli and lime — just like in Hanoi. Walking up a steep set of dimly lit stairs you would be surprised at the heaven that waits above. A spread of tables cover the floor and you’ll be promptly directed to your seats. Get used to sharing; this place gets packed on weeknights. The service is very efficient and while it may lack the charm of a more conventional restaurant you can let it slide with amazing quality food, cheap prices and fast turn around. The pork spring rolls are divine and make the perfect entrée. But you can’t leave without trying a bowl of Phở with various cuts of meat.
