Cato Fruit & Vegetables

I’m a big fan of this place. There is a great range of produce at good prices, eggs that are cheaper than Coles or Woolies (free range included) and there is also a good selection of Asian/​Indian sauces, noodles, breads, cans etc. A nice wheel of brie cheese is $ 5 here compared to $ 8 – 10 at the big stores. I also bought organic, fresh orange juice here for $ 5 and the hubby loved it. On occasion I pick up one or two small bunches of flowers here for $ 6 each, colourful orchids or gerberas as a treat to myself.

Wow — Great prices and a fantastic stock of fruits and veggies. Really fantastic place to stock up and great value for your money. I also love their little grocery section — interesting spices, Best Foods mayo from the states, good selection of pasta and antipasto things like artichoke hearts and marinated mushrooms, and good prices on a limited amount of cheese and milk products. It is a bit dark and the floors are usually pretty dirty but I will only stock up here.

Perfectly rounds out the shopping center on chapel. Decent quality produce at a cheap price. The staff are really nice and have cheaper eggs then the super markets.

I sometimes wonder if the produce they sell at Cato is the reject stuff from neighbouring Coles and Woolies. I really dont have a problem with this as the difference in price is ridiculously favourable and the fruit/​veg are usually ok quality.
The product range at Cato is better as well, they have a great herb selection and you can usually pick up a big bunch of coriander for around $ 1.50 mmmmmm coriander. There is also a specialty Asian section up the back with noodles, spices etc. Nuts! I almost forgot about their nuts! Great to grab as a snack and nibble on.
As the price suggests dont expect to be greeted with a smile or any type of ambience, but really its just groceries. Cato is awesome because you can walk out of there with a green bag stuffed with fruit and vegetables for under $ 10

With the rising cost of living (read: food prices escalating so quickly) it’s great to know that you can still bag a bargain at independent grocery stores like my favourite fruit and vegetable destination, Cato.
Tucked neatly behind the hustle and bustle of Chapel Street, facing the car park at Coles, means ample parking is always available so you can shop in peace. With a no-​frills policy at play, don’t expect a squeaky clean, clinical shopping experience like at some supermarkets. What you can expect though is a wide array of fresh produce at affordable prices all year round. For instance when most supermarkets were selling bananas at $ 14/​kg, Cato sold bananas at $ 10/​kg.
They’re also got a small selection of Asian groceries, nuts, herbs, spices and condiments available. But my all time favourite reason for shopping at Cato is they have really hot fresh chillies: a staple in my diet!
