Nice staff but the food disappointed. My spring rolls looked great but didn’t quite have the delicacy that typifies the best Vietnamese food. I also wasn’t crazy about the stuffed chicken wing. The filling tasted a little stale and I ended up leaving half of it. It’s very family friendly(kids drumming chopsticks, singing loudly) which will be a drawcard for some, less so for others. With so many excellent, authentic, good value Vietnamese restaurants in Sydney, in would be an exercise in self punishment to eat here. Our waitress pushed us into ordering food we didn’t want(we ended up with way too much food), and we got the clear impression this was just to boost sales. The wait staff completely ignored us once we’d ordered. The food itself was bland and uninteresting. Not only that, every dish tasted the same — you might think they’d just stir-fried(and not particularly well, it was soggy) and sloshed sweet chilli and some soy sauce onto everything. Ambiance? Well it’s in the dodgy side of kings cross, across from several backpackers and a park full of homeless people, stolen shopping trollies and discarded mattresses. The bill, when it came, was surprisingly hefty. We’d been looking for a cheap bite to eat, but realised in the end we could have feasted at any number of better restaurants for the same or a lesser sum. Lesson learned!

Baybua Vietnamese Restaurant is a local favourite and situated in the heart of Potts Point. The restaurant lacks ambience but makes up for it with the delicious food and efficient service. The waitress knows the menu inside and out and I suggest considering the Chef’s recommendations. We had a vegetarian dining with us and the waitress suggested vegetarian San choy bau for entrée. To put it simply we were all blown away by the freshness of the San choy bau ingredients; the mint was a hint of summer, the tofu(the star of the dish) was firm on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside and the sauce balanced all the flavours beautifully creating a flavour sensation. We also tried the Tamarind fish, Vegetarian orange ‘duck’, Bamboo shoot vegetables and Chef’s recommendation of the Crackling pork belly. Can’t wait to go back for another Vietnamese banquet soon but bringing a bottle of wine next time as it is BYO.

I had so much fun here! We had a large group of 10, and they did a great job of accomodating a frantic and tired group of professionals with a myriad of dietary restrictions. I was impressed. They are very understated. A little off the beaten track, but so worth the walk. I must hand it to my girl, Liz, who did the ordering for the table. The salted tofu was delicious, and the duck was perfect. I also recall a really lovely curry being passed around at some stage. I also enjoyed the service. The woman is a bit direct in the way she communicates but goodness for her, she got the job *done.* I know we were a big group, and I can’t tell you how complicated our order was because of the dietary requirements of some guests. Everything came out lovely though, and fast. The place is BYO, and I suggest you do just that. The banquet menu was bang-on for a group our size and for around $ 35/head, we had a feast! I’ll be returning, for sure.

fantastic food, but the ambience in this place or lack of really lets it down. Go there enjoy the fantastic food and try and ignore the fact its dead quiet. A firm favourite with locals. Can’t recommend the pork belly enough
