Remembered tonight why I don’t eat here much. Had a bland and cold parma at their parma night. Two beers cost $ 23.20 and it was flat with a weird metallic taste to it. Won’t be going back for the food or drinks :(

Pretty good beers and excellent value if you can make it here during happy hour. They serve schooners, which is always a bonus in Melbourne! Food is standard pub grub, and I recommend you stick with the basics which are pretty good. The fancier items are not worth the extra spend in my humble opinion — the salmon I had from the grill was well overcooked and ruined. The mash was super delicious though! Beer selection is good, and prices are not bad. Meat raffle on Friday nights. Ok Unsurprising then, that the menu is not at all vego friendly. Not a single item on the main course is vegetarian. Couldn’t quite believe it! Why they had to add bacon to the pumpkin and ricotta ravioli is a mystery.

Although it is a bit of a walk from me in Southbank, I stumbled across The Local on Bay Street in Port Melbourne not long ago. Televisions playing repeats of the EPL, Cricket and even AFL games which were contested six months ago adorned the walls. Even booths were retrofitted to have their own LCD screens playing the sport. How intimately cool is that? The soiled green carpet and old wood panelling gives it some character however the true characters are those languishing at the bar enjoying their pints of Carlton Draught. These patrons looked like they had been there since the place started trading and it didn’t look as if they were going to be dislodged any time soon. The menu had all of the classics that you would find in a true pub. Steak, parma, pasta… but I opted for the Lamb Shank Pie: slow-cooked lamb shank in Guinness sauce with mashed potatoes and peas, topped with golden puff pastry for $ 23. As I knocked back my Carlton Draught, the pie was delivered to my table by the window. It was huge. I mean HUGE! I would soon find after exposing the lamb shank under the pastry that it was still on the bone which led to a serious amount of flavour absorbed by the ingredients in the innards. Another pint was ordered and I took to the challenge of consuming the beast. I lost in the end but the fight was well worth it. Visit this place if you are looking for pub food and a relaxed atmosphere especially if you are keen to watch the sport. It is as simple as catching the tram from the CBD. Too easy.

The Local is a typical suburban pub in an inner suburb — not too expensive, local clientele, the usual steak, parma, burger menu, some live acoustic music and comedy every Tuesday night. There’s nothing particularly special about this place — but if you live nearby and are looking for a pint and a pub meal the Local is a fine option.

The Local looks a little like an Irish Pub, with its wood paneled bar and green carpet, however its a far cry from the dodgy theme pubs out there. The food here is fantastic. We had the Vegie Burger, and it was big enough to share between two. I got a side order of chips, and they were great too, with an aioli dipping sauce that topped them off perfectly. A mate had the Guinness Pie, and was wrapped to be handed a huge ‘bowl of pie’, with a crust covering the entire top of the bowl. With a great range of tap beers, The Local seems to be just that, many locals favourite pub to come and grab a beer and some top notch pub grub.
