It features a great range of fine art and crafts from indigenous Australian communities.
Beside each painting displayed on the wall is information about the work and the artist who created it, so you have a good understanding of the creation.
ETHICAL
This ethical gallery has been referred to as the Body Shop of Aboriginal Art in Australia.
This is because the artists commission the production of their images on to products owned by themselves, through their art centres, according to the gallery, which encourages business development with artists on top of giving them royalties.
This centre should be commended for bypassing the usual third party agreements which see many indigenous artists ripped off where they’re paid a modest some for the work only for the third party to sell it on for a higher price. The artists and their art centres own the work on display so the cash goes back to them.
DOT PAINTINGS
There’s an extensive range of dot paintings of all shapes and sizes to suit a variety of budgets. Prices start from $ 150 to more than $ 2000.
MIRROR WORK
I particularly like the mirror work creations, some of which are in a dot painting style, while some are not. I was particularly struck by one by Imiyari (Yilpi) Adamson called Mission Days — Camel Riding. It’s a very happy work, with images of children looking like they’re having fun riding camels.
OTHER CREATIONS
There is a large range of beautiful jewellery, hand carved wooden sculpture, baskets, hand-​stitched rugs, cushions paper mache boxes and even beanies. There’s also a range of indigenous books.
PERU
The gallery has just started importing silver and ceramic jewellery using the same principled business methods as with the indigenous Australian communities.
