No toilets so please be aware — preferred the original chicken over he saucy chicken. Service was wonderful. Meals came out fast. The cabbage salad was dry, needed more sauce. The potato heaven and corn dish were very sweet, it was almost like eating dessert. Other than that really enjoyed it. Yum

We chose the boneless chicken half and half, original and sweet-chilli, the chicken was perfectly crispy, how ever the seafood kimchi pancake lack abit of personality i barely saw any seafood in it, the cheesy wedges were ok. but overall the chicken and beer was really good. my friends thought it was bit salty but it fit well with my beer, cosy atmosphere too.

We arrived for an early dinner at 6.30pm and were lucky to scoop up one of the last tables available — definitely a case of good timing. Sadly could I have done it all again I might have rung and booked a table inside because while outside has fantastic atmosphere(especially with the live music next door), they have a serious moth problem. And I mean serious, to the point where they were landing in our food(gross). Some bug zappers are needed stat. While we’re definitely there to devour chicken, we know we need some sides to accompany our meal. After a quick consult of the menu, we decide on the corn cheese($ 9.80) and the potato heaven($ 14.00). The corn cheese comes out first and is steaming hot, a sizzling plate with corn kernels topped with melted cheese and parsley. You need to eat this quick! Otherwise the cheese sets and the effect of the dish is gone. We can’t help but laugh at the sides we’ve chosen — it’s like whoever designed the menu was super high… and yet it works. The potato heaven was particularly true of this — creamy mashed potato topped with melted cheese, wedges, sweet chilli sauce and sour cream. I actually really didn’t want to like this because it sounds nuts — but it was great! We foolishly made the mistake of ordering a second one which defeated us in the end, but the first one was like a crazy comfort food dish that ticked the boxes of satisfying and junky at the same time. We were all in agreement that chicken is best served on the bone, so we chose two full chickens($ 34.00 each) rather than the boneless option. They have four different flavours to select from, and since each chicken is cut into smaller pieces we figured we’d try them all! Obviously in the name of blogging research… For all of us on the table it was unanimous that the original fried chicken was our favourite. Crunchy, lightly seasoned and juicy on the inside they were a popular offering. The sweet chilli is labelled on the menu as Gami’s most popular but I actually found it much too sugary for my own tastes — then again I’m not the biggest sweet chilli fan out there. The garlic and soy flavour was my least favourite for the night — the taste not quite distinguishable, and the sauce a little too sticky. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a saucy chicken when the sauce is right, but if it doesn’t hit a certain high, then I’ll gravitate back towards the dry fried chicken. After all, I can’t help but take a little satisfied pleasure at the crunch of that crispy coating. The final flavour I tried was referred to as ‘spicy’. It had a little bit of a kick, nothing too serious for those of you who love your chilli(like I do even though sometimes I go in too hard!). Flavour wise it was my second favourite though as the sauce was well balanced and still kept the chicken crunchy. We didn’t actually get to finish our chicken as you can imagine — predictably we over-ordered. But Gami do provide boxes for takeaway which was great to see. So what was the verdict of Gami Chicken & Beer? I like the concept, and I think this place has great potential. However I felt that the sauced chickens didn’t like up to their reputation, and the original plain version didn’t quite match the highs of other fried chicken offerings around town. But the search continues, and perhaps a return to Chimek to compare is in order?!

I assume every Chimek’s(chicken & mekju /beer) place will be successful because who doesn’t like beer and fried chicken, right? We went to Gami Chicken last night at Shafto Lane after our friend Vivien suggested the place and it was easy enough to find a table for 3 on a busy cold summer night. The menu at Gami was really simple to follow and we decided straight away on the boneless chicken(no mess) in Soy Garlic and Sweet Chili. I really like how Gami allowed customers to order two different flavours of their chicken in one set because then customers won’t get too sick of eating too much chicken in sweet chili sauce. Due to the cold weather we also ordered a bowl of spicy soup which was quite odd because both of my dining companions couldn’t handle spices very well. They also added kimchi pancake to the order. I found a lot of ale in but what made me really pleased was that Gami was selling the Snow lager beer. I like pairing fried chicken with the crisp and the light bitterness of Snow beer so I ordered one straight away. Gami’s kimchi pancake although quite thick and not crispy on the outside, was filled with kimchee and well cooked. The pancake was served on a hot pan which kept it warm for quite some time and can be shared between 3 – 4 people. We really enjoyed this and will be ordering another one when we visit Gami. The spicy red soup was filled with different types of seafood, cabbages and sweet potato noodle. The soup was definitely spicy if you can’t really handle your chili but the broth was quite rich. The big bowl of soup can be shared between 2 or more people depending on the amount of extra dishes that you ordered. I only wish there were more sweet potato noodles in the soup. When the chicken arrived we looked at the portion and thought that it was quite small since it was being shared between three people, especially if we didn’t order any appetiser /soup. Our boneless chicken was a 750 gram mix of breast and thigh fillet. All pieces had crispy skin and tender juicy meat. The chicken meal also came with daikon and cabbage salad but no one really touched the cabbage salad. Gami had an option to put additional sauce on the side for an extra $ 2 which would be a great option if you want to try another flavour. We had an enjoyable night at Gami and the service was really good as well. All the staff seemed to be friendly even during a busy and cold night. Gami will definitely be another good Chimek place to go to on top of the one that Perth already has(Sun BBQ& Chimek Fremantle). Always great to see more Chimek places popping up and recommended for those who haven’t given it a try yet.

I’ve picked up takeaway from Gami a couple of time now and that fried chicken is the business! How oh how to they make it so much better than other Korean fried chicken I have tried? Wasn’t sold on all of the sides, but the dumplings were nice enough. I feel like this restaurant has really livened up Shafto Lane, with lots of people exuding fried chicken happiness.

I came here for dinner on a Wednesday and was surprised at how crowded it was! I think the waitresses were too because they were short staffed and all looked a bit stressed as a result. $ 5 pints of Feral beers on tap — this was a very good thing. We ordered the kimchi pancake for a starter and it was so delicious! It was hard to find the self control not to fill up on those before the main meal. We ordered half the soy garlic chicken and half the spicy chicken. The chicken is supposed to come with a cabbage salad with some pickled daikon radishes but they didn’t bring them out for us and we had to ask two different waitresses. I know this was just because they were short staffed so it wasn’t a big deal. I love pickled daikon radishes with my fried chicken, it helps cut some of the richness and is just perfect. The spicy chicken was a bit too goopy in my opinion, swimming a little bit in the sauce which was a little too spicy for my preference but my partner loved it. The soy garlic was really delicious. I’d love to come back and try the original one, you really can’t go wrong.

This place is actually pretty amazing!!! Really cheap price for Korean fried chicken, and definitely the best in Perth! The chicken wings were crunchy, juicy and so flavoursome! The sauce was not too sweet either, which I really liked. The rice cake and ramen combination tasted okay, but the Gamj chips were just too weird. They used this bacon powder thing as seating and the chips ended up tasting like soggy bacon flavoured shapes biscuits. But will definitely come back again!

Had a full dinner tonight. Consisting of the spicy chicken and kimchi pancake. First thing I enjoyed was the complimentary shrimp crackers. It was a nice suprise as its rare to get things for free in Perth. The spicy sauce was awesome. Perfect sweetness and level of spice. It made me sweat slightly but not ferociously like when I eat nadoes. However I found this time the chicken could been a little more moist and possibly a thicker coating of batter. It did however look amazing. The kimchee pancake flavour was on point however it was slightly thick compared to other Korean resteraunts I have been to. The highlight for me tho was the service. I had left my keys at the table and the waiter ran down the street to hand it back to me. Fantastic service.

Went here on Melbourne cup day hoping that most people would be passed out, partying on in other pubs in Shafto lane and in the CBD and that I would get a quiet dinner with a friend. Alas this was not the case as the restaurant was 35% full within 30 minutes if it’s opening time. I entered gami chicken to pumping dance music and a groovy fun vibe. The chef was all smiles while he fried up some Korean chicken. My friend and I ordered the spicy chicken with cabbage and the seafood pancake, all up totaling to just 29.95. One of the cheapest dinners I’ve had in Perth and this doesn’t happen often. Portions are sufficient. I also had some BYO shiraz which the lovely waitress decided not to charge us for. Food arrived swiftly. The seafood pancake had calamari octopus and scallops in it. And was served with soy sauce. The spicy chicken arrived in a sizzling pan. The spicy chicken was rated as one chilli spicy in their menu, and I thought this was accurate but my friend could barely eat it. She thought it was too spicy. Even the complementary sweet ginger didn’t help with the spice. I took advantage of the situation and scoffed down the chicken. It has a slight kick to it and a somewhat bitter taste. I’ve had spicier chicken at arirang and other korean bbq places. The chicken is of average taste and if you’re looking for Korean chicken then this is not the place for you. But if you’re looking for a place with a great vibe, delicious food, awesome service and a cheap eat — then hello gami chicken. :)

I’ve been exploring the area around Shafto Lane for lunch over the last few months, and I was intrigued to see an under-construction venue finally launched as the curiously named Gami Chicken & Beer. This wasn’t a brand I was familiar with, so I looked it up and became rather excited, seeing it featured in lists of Melbourne’s best fried chicken and Korean food. The first time we walked past it was rather busy inside and grabbed a menu to examine later, but were lucky enough to be handed a free sample — a little box containing two pieces of moist, boneless chicken, which did its job as we were very keen to go back for the full experience. A full chicken at $ 32 seemed a bit full on for two, until I remembered that I pay $ 14 for nachos from Zambrero, and $ 20-ish for burgers from quite a few places around. We decided to share some chicken wings & spare ribs for our first visit, and avoided the temptation to order most of the sides. We both preferred the ribs to the wings, but only because they were slightly easier to eat… although I think I’m missing the point — this was the best fried chicken I’VEEVEREATEN. Moist, crunchy, and totally not greasy. It’s not heavily spiced, either — flavour can be added with your choice of dipping sauce($ 1 each). Andrew chose the«sweet soy garlic» while I predictably went for the ambiguous«spicy». Both sauces were really nice, my «spicy» had plenty of kick but wasn’t over the top. Even the salad was good, and a much welcome relief every few mouthfuls of fried goodness. You don’t realise how truly horrific most fried chicken(and in particular KFC) is until you eat something like this. Believe it or not, I still have a relatively sensitive stomach when it comes to eating fatty foods, and consuming a surprisingly large amount of this chicken didn’t upset me one bit. I’m under no illusions that this was a «healthy» lunch(hey, it came with salad!) but I don’t think it was as bad as I first thought. Or maybe it was. Oh well. I could eat here every day, but I won’t…purely for health reasons. If you even remotely like fried chicken, you must visit Gami Chicken & Beer.

Korean style fried chicken… So I sauntered in here today on my lonesome before a hair cut to see what this new establishment had to offer. My timing was on point as I was giving a table immediately and water arrived along with an explanation of the menu shortly after. It seems it is table service here(unless I was lucky) and I decided on the Gami fries with sauce and the 8 chicken wings with both the chilli and sweet soy garlic sauces. I washed this down with a serve of sly fox from Feral brewing. How was it you ask? The chicken was succulent, the coating was crispy and flavoursome and the dipping sauces completed the experience. The beer was served cold with a nice head and I couldn’t fault the service. Will I return? You betcha!
