A very good quick food style Mexican restaurant. I had the fish tacos and they were excellent. Lots of authentic hot sauces for those who actually want some good spice added. The guacamole was good but not top notch. I would highly recommend the place. Price is the biggest reason to come here. Quality food at great prices. Don’t expect a high end restaurant feel. This is more like a taco bar in Los Angeles, where I am from. It made me very happy to find some quality Mexican food while I was visiting from California.

Despite the dreadful name, Gringo Vibes is a decent little Tex-Mex-style Mexican joint. Coming from the States where Mexican restaurants are plentiful(and usually pretty cheap), GV is a breath of fresh, salsa-infused air in a city where tacos come with organic whatchamawhoozits and for some reason cost more than the GDP of some sub-Saharan African nations. I’ve had burritos and tacos here — both were yum. I’m also a fan of their nachos. The serving sizes are pretty generous so bring a large appetite. The only downside is that the restaurant is a bit on the small side and it gets busy, so either come early or get it as takeaway and eat it at home!

I am a spicy food lover and always looking for a good Mexican restaurant. Last few times my Mexican food experience was not great. I loved this place, yummy nachos served with fresh salsa was delicious. Serving was generous. All in all have a great experience and most importantly my wife was happy. Hospitality was good and good value for money.

We have been to quite a few Mexican restaurants throughout our home city of Melbourne and the United States. This is one of those place that you don’t like or dislike — the perfect way to describe this place is «meh». The food was okay, but wouldn’t come back…

Gringo Vibes, how you make me smile. I am a big fan of Mexican cuisine and these guys do it well. Surprisingly it is an intimate and cool restaurant but doesn’t have the large $ tag attached to it like a lot of similar places would. The food was flavoursome and fresh, and there was plenty of options!

I’ve been to this place 3 times now and have noted a worrying trend. The first time was in August 2012 and I loved it. The food was delicious and had great flavour. The nachos were to die for. Here I am 8 months later and the food is barely recognizable. When I order nachos as a starter I expect them to come out first and not at the same time as the mains which is how it went tonight. When I saw the nachos I was instantly disappointed, there just wasn’t enough happening on the plate. The cheese had dried up, I assume from being in the microwave too long. I hope they can get the old chef back but fear the damage may have been done already.

In Melbourne, Mexican food seems to mostly involve fancy restaurants with $ 25 – 30 burritos and tacos. Coming from the US, this seems insane. Tacos should be $ 2 – 3 each, and a burrito certainly shouldn’t cost more than $ 10. There are certainly posh Mexican restaurants in the states, but 90% of Mexican restaurants are unpretentious places where you can grab a quick and cheap meal. Gringo Vibes understands this – and in the process serves better food than the vast majority of Mexican eateries in Melbourne for a fraction of the price. I’ve been to GV a few times now, and in several categories they get things right that are almost never right in an Australian Mexican restaurant. First off, they use well-cooked black beans and refried pinto beans in their tacos and burritos. No sad kidney beans here. Second, both their flour and corn tortillas are never stale, always flavorful, and the appropriate size. Flavorless, dry tortillas and bland kidney beans are the bane of 90% of Australian attempts at Mexican cuisine. Burritos are finished with rice, crisp lettuce, and cheese. There is a pretty good selection of meat(chicken, beef), and vegetarian(beans & rice, chicken-style seitan) options for fillings. The«vibes» portion of the establishment is slightly contrived, but well executed. Reggae LPs adorn the walls, and the speakers play an amazing stream of reggae and dub that is obscure enough that I’m not familiar with any of it(and I listen to a fair bit of reggae), but of uniformly excellent quality. Finally, GV is home to a great beer value – $ 5 cans of Tecate, finished with a crucial wedge of lime. Drinking Mexican beer with a lime seems uncommon here in my experience, but really is the way it ought to be be done. About the only thing lacking at Gringo Vibes is a greater selection of Mexican-style meat fillings. Al pastor(similar to doner kebab), cabeza(beef cheeks), or lengua(beef tongue) are all delicious and much missed by me.

From what I had the other night I am a new fan. I had hear about this from another Californian friend and I was pleased to have fresh house made chips and real salsa that actually tastes fresh & good. For nights when I don’t want to cook myself, this is where I would go to get my Mexi on — and ability for margaritas and beer with salsa and chips. made my move to Melbourne a little more bearable. The guys had the enchiladas which were great because they were of appropriate size — as in plato style with rice and beans. Dudes were happy. Friend enjoyed her quesadilla plato & I had the fish tacos which were ok. A bit overcooked, could have been chicken, not the light & fluffy kind that you envision. Place is small, don’t expect to have a table free and don’t expect to have a dinner party with a group. If this was in walking distance I might go there 1 x week. very good value for $$ compared with the rest of Australian Mexican menus… finally!
