Food not authentic and is expensive. Had sambal chicken, prawns and eggplant. There was hardly any Belachan taste in the dishes. The chicken was oily and sweetish. The prawns was crispy, tasted more like the usual salt and pepper prawns that you can find in most Chinese restaurants. On the whole, the experience was disappointing.

The food was tasty but slightly too greasy. They had a fish tank over crowded with goldfish. They didn’t look well, and I think one was dead. The waitress asked if I wanted my entrée and main at the same time. I said yes. Main arrived within 5mins. Had nearly finished eating it, and inquired about the entrée. It seemed they forgot so they started making it then. Staff seem to avoid eye contact. It’s hard to get their attention. Had to go to the counter to ask for the bill because couldn’t call them over. There were only 2 other tables with people on them, so it’s not like this lack of service can be blamed on them being busy. So in conclusion: food ok and arrives fast but they might forget some of it; pretty expensive; quite greasy; average service; depressing goldfish

I’ve been here a few times and have enjoyed my meal. As has been mentioned in previous reviews there is a large mark up between lunch and dinner. However I usually come here for the lunch specials so it’s a win for me! :) They have a great lunch time special where selected dishes and a can of drink is $ 9.80. Amazing bargain! I have had the nasi goreng where you are able to select the level of spicyness between mild, med, hot… Me not being able to handle my spice too well opted for mild! The rice was fragrant and the flavourful. They were not stingy with the ingredients as there were large pieces of chicken throughout the dish. The dishes were also large and leaves enough for leftovers. Definitely a place I would frequent again for lunch.

Awesome Malaysian restaurant albeit at slightly premium prices(but who cares when you can get food this authentic). My favourite has to be the fried koay teow(extra spicy for me) which has good heat and the nice garlicky burnt taste that we are so used to. Has to be one of the better Char Koay Teow dishes I have tastes compared to Perth and Melbourne Malaysian restaurants. Also had the Christmas special: Nyonya fish head curry — at $ 38 it was a steal. Curry was flavourful(probably similar to a chicken kapitan) with lady’s fingers, aubergines and a large fish head full of hidden nooks and crannies of succulent fish meat and stuff. Sambal does a decent cendol too. So for all you Malaysians who whinge about the price — think about(The Malaya at Darling Harvbour) which is probably a tenth as authentic at probably double the price and you have things in a better pespective.

Decent Malaysian. I go because it’s close to work. Would I drive across town for it? no. But it’s okay. They have sit down table service with a full menu, and there’s always a special for just under $ 10. There’s also one– or two-choice quick-serve options(also under $ 10) from the ready-to-plate servery beside the cash if you’re in a mad hurry. Usually quite busy during lunch because of nearby businesses. Relaxed dining it’s not. No idea what it’s like at night.

I’m always a bit annoyed at restaurants that dramatically mark up their prices between lunch and dinner. But having said that, I was here for lunch so I wasn’t the one getting ripped off. Sambal is a decent restaurant in a white collar part of Sydney that doesn’t have much on offer. Because of this it is always PACKED. They do Malaysian favourites like Nasi Lemak, Chicken Rice, Char Kway Teow etc etc. I haven’t had much Malaysian food, but I enjoyed my Nasi Lemak with beef redang and sago pudding. According to my Malaysian colleague it’s OK, but overpriced and definitely not the best you can get in Sydney. Check it out if you work in Macquarie Park and are sick of the same dull café food every day. Book ahead if you’re in a group too!
