Easily the best coffee I had in my entire Newcastle trip! It seems to be a pretty trendy place compared to many of the other cafes around the main city centre. It was really relaxed, order and pay at the counter and they’ll bring the food out. Indoor and outdoor seating. Not the fastest service everywhere, but seemed to be up to Newcastle standards. The regular menu wasn’t all that appealing to me as I was after a big breakfast. It seemed to be mainly cakes and toasts etc. I ordered off the specials board — a pumpkin, leek, and haloumi quessadilla. Amaaaazing.

A trendy place where the staff are rude and judgmental. The hot chocolate was undrinkable and the slice was incredibly stale. The place really relies on its aesthetic more than its product and unfortunately draws the type of crowd very unwilling to share the communal table. We got tired of the rude and too-busy-chatting staff and the poor quality of food and haven’t been back. ETA February 2013: I haven’t had a chance to try anything yet, but it appears that there may be a change of management — the décor is much cheerier, the staff are so much happier and the menu looks very interesting and tempting. As soon as I get a chance to try it out, a new review will appear.

I figure this account of Good Brother Espresso is best written in singular words. Trendy. Hipster. Coffee. Eats. Rustic. Worthwhile. But that isn’t fair because Good Brother Espresso looks good and their coffee was equally so. Our time here felt like a pit stop so I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to soak up their atmosphere but it definitely felt like a café you could bring your laptop along to and work the morning away, or settle in to read your favourite book. The menu seemed to be pretty standard café fare and I’m looking forward to going back and trying more than a coffee and the delicious morsel that was a fig and date roll.
