Moray Cafe

The review suffers a little due to my original poor experience but I got a free coffee with my first check in, so I decided to give this place a second chance.
Nice looking little place, in and outdoor seating. Next to a road but not a hugely busy one. At least not at the time I was here.
Service was prompt and friendly. Free coffee was fairly well made, with actual shaved chocolate, which I always consider a big win.
Food took a while coming out, I had the big breakfast. Chunky bread, very lightly toasted with eggs stacked on one piece and bacon on the other. While this was a little logistically challenging, the bread was really nice.
Fairly standard big breakfast. Streaky bacon poached eggs, mushrooms, tomato and… Hold on a second. Those are kranskey sausages, nice way to mix it up. Dukkah on the tomato was delicious and takes a little risk with the addition of fennel seeds (some people can’t stand them but I think they’re amazing).
A lot of food. I shouldn’t have finished it but did.
In conclusion. Review is held back by a poor first experience but the food, coffee and most of all the service today made a good start on redeeming this little place. I’ll be back to see how a third visit goes.

I had a bad experience here a few years back and didn’t return. But I decided to give it another go.
Firstly the coffee, service and décor were great.
The food portions were huge, but the quality, flavors and techniques were poor. I had the Southern fried Chicken Waffles. I am usually a fan of mixing sweet and savoury, but it really didnt work. The Chicken was breast and was sooooo dry it was inedible. The Waffles were sweet and savoury and soggy. The eggs were undercooked with the white still runny.
My partner had the vege breakfast which was much better, but still fairly bland.
We wont be back for a while.

Moray Café has seating inside and out, and they’re a-​ok with you sitting outside if you have your dog with you — they even have a bowl of water to keep them hydrated while you have breakfast! Drinks wise they have a good selection of hot and cold, including refreshing frappes. The food servings are generous, especially the waffles! Unless you’re super hungry, it’s good enough to share between two, perhaps with some extra candied bacon on the side.
Good food, good drinks, good prices, good atmosphere — check it out if you’re in the area :)

Awesome variety and fresh ingredients. We loved sitting in the beautiful atrium. We went just before closing time and we’re well received and not rushed despite them obviously having had a long busy day.

Review for a milkshake. A first?
I stopped here today after a bike ride, and opted for the $ 7 Oreo milkshake and a coffee. I would have been happy with a creamy, sweet shake (think Golden Arches style), but got something quite different. It was a bit more milky than your typical shake, and not too sweet; fresh and refreshing. It was nicely garnished with chocolate flakes and a strawberry, and had a complete Oreo floating in it to finish it off in style. In sum, it was really great. Only issue, it was a bit small-​ish.
Other than this, Moray Café is a nice place that I’ve visited a few times now, typically for breakfast. I’ve good memories of the food, but don’t remember it in detail (too long ago).
Next time that I’m here for Brekky I’ll order a nice shake with it!

it’s a good solid ³⁄₅ place that has made worse but certainly made better meals for the years I’ve been going here.
Moray is down the street and I’m not a huge breakfaster (mildly alleergic to eggs, would rather lunch food) so I’ve always given this place a ‘it’s good enough’ kind of view when I get suckered into having to pay to eat before midday.
Recently though a couple of really pleasant breakfasts have told me maybe I have it wrong, but then you have the sort of meal I had on Saturday and remember the problem with Moray is not an incapable kitchen, but an inconsistent one that will too often send out food that is good enough, C+ grade dishes.
Which is fine if you haven’t tried the same dishes previously and given them a really solid B /​A-​.
I had the chilli con carne with guacamole, tortilla and corn chips. Look it was pretty good, I’ve had better, but I’ve had far far worse. The portion of beef was weirdly small, but the guacamole was surprisingly fresh and clean tasting which is a rare treat in Brisbane.
But there it is again, it was pretty good, not great, not bad. That’s the thing with Moray. I always want them to do better. When I’ve eaten a great meal there I have been genuinely taken aback by the deftness and pleasantness of it, and then the next time, same dish, same busyness of tables and it’s below average.
At restaurant school Moray would have been your C student with must try harder written on any report. Go if you want, it’s pretty okay, sometimes great, but never reliably so.

hmmm what can I say, we live close… close enough that the Moray has always been an iconic location for locals. I want to love the Moray like we used to. It went downhill for many years and although the last few years with two different owners has been an improvement, sadly today it was disappointing.
The refurbishment of the interior and exterior is shabby chic cute, it’s fresh, pretty and bright. Big plus.
The food for breakfast was reasonably priced and nice, nothing to rock your world but good value and tasty.
The disappointment was the coffee, it was very weak and that meant little flavour. And it was also slopped in my saucer. The staff noticed and apologise, but just offered another saucer. When really it should have been a whole new coffee, it was way too overfilled and obviously weak and watery. I love my coffees and will travel anywhere when I find an espresso made with skill and passion. Sadly it isn’t at the Moray, so handy just up the road. :(

Well the Moray Café was an OK experience. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and had to settle with a couple of meal options, which was okay. Staff was not overly friendly.
I was walking into the café to order as it seemed to me there’s no table service. I was wrong, ordered inside anyway. Food (prawns) came out promptly and was okay, nothing special. The mayonnaise was quite runny though. What did bother me was that no staff ever returned to my table? The wait staff completely ignored me even though I would have loved to have coffee and dessert. Well, needless to say, I just left and won’t be returning.

Re-​stumbling upon Moray Café, I gathered the girls for a little catch-​up session and hoped that their dinner options wouldn’t be disappointing despite the cheaper price on their normal menu for what they call their «Tight-​Ass Tuesdays.» The last time I was here was for breakfast, and it was quite a while ago. I didn’t find it astounding last time, but it was decent, so I thought that I’d give dinner a try…
Moray offers a good variety for dinner — from gnocchi to lamb ribs to hamburgers — which is definitely one of its appeals. Lately, I’ve been extremely indecisive, which isn’t my usual self, so I had a hard time deciding on what I wanted! I ended up going for the lamb ribs and papaya salad Vietnamese style, the latter of which I’m a big fan of. I was impressed with the presentation and colors of the dish, and the taste didn’t disappoint either. The meat melted right off the ribs, and was tender, but a little too buttery for my liking. The papaya salad was good, but the sweet chili sauce was a bit too spicy for me. The salad didn’t taste particularly Vietnamese, lacking in some flavors — fish sauce, vinegar, etc. — but it was probably adjusted for the Australian palate, which I suppose is a good thing. The refreshing but spicy salad balanced the heavier lamb, so overall, it was a good combination. The gnocchi dish was also tasty, and the gnocchi pasta was chewy and the perfect texture.
For dessert, we all had one of Pat and Stick’s ice cream sandwiches served with strawberries and their vanilla bean cream, the latter of which tasted like cheesecake filling! It was probably the cream cheese or marscapone with the vanilla bean that gave it the flavor. Mmm, delish! The ice cream sandwich itself was also really yummy. I had the Espresso Lace, which is a crunchy oat and almond cookie with espresso ice cream. No artificial flavors or preservatives are added (two things I loathe), and everything does taste non-​artificial, so I give them an overall 4.5÷5. Also, the ice cream somehow didn’t melt very quickly, so I savored my dessert slowly without making a mess!
Although Moray Café has rather dim lighting and makes an effort to look like a nice restaurant, in the end, it is a casual restaurant. We agreed that the portions for some of the dishes (ie. gnocchi) were a bit small (especially for a guy!), but the food was probably a 3.5 or 4 out of 5. The service was decent, though I wish they would refrigerate their water! The tap for water out of the wall doesn’t look rustic, it just looks dirty…

Wagyu beef burger with caramalised onions and blue cheese dressing on brioche. Yum! Ring the cardiologist! Friendly service and nice coffee.

Lactose-​free coconut yoghurt spooned over bircher muesli, drizzled with passionfruit? Don’t mind if I do!
On the corner of Moray Street and Merthyr Road, this half-​greenhouse, half alfresco café is a great spot to enjoy a hearty (and healthy!) breakfast… at 12pm. Though the outside area is completely sheltered, we opted to sit inside on this rainy day, underneath the bay windows. The staff were very friendly, and promptly took our coffee orders and brought over water.
As I perused the menu, my eyes leapt to the aforementioned bircher muesli. Easy decision, whilst I avoided the sautéed mushrooms with spinach and a poached egg which was also calling out to me. Got to love when the first decision you make for the day is by far the best; the bircher muesli was wonderfully tasty, and featured a hefty amount of sliced bananas, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, pepitas and macadamias scattered over the top.
The coffee (long black) was wonderfully strong as well (their coffee of the week was a Guatemalan blend). Signs around the café also advertised their ‘beer of the week’ (Stone & Wood Pale Ale) and ‘wine of the week’. Breakfast is served from 6.30am right up to 3pm every day of the week — so [theoretically] every day of the week can be a lazy breakfast day!

It’s easy to see why this place gets packed… the clientele are all repeat business so I thought i’d give it a go one Saturday afternoon.
Whilst the café is packed and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, I notice only 3 sad cakes sitting in the glass display area… none of the cut, giving more the impression of a display cake than anything, I thought that was a bit of something that wasn’t too great.
I also thought it a great idea to try the Moray burger seeing it was the Moray café! So great idea it was, the burger was pretty huge, too huge for me to eat in a neat and polite way. But man did it taste good. The pattie was really tasty and homemade as was evident when I pulled a bit off it off to feed my son. He devoured it and ask for more.
The coffee was really nice too, we had a cappacino and a chai latte, the wait for the food didn’t take long, and it’s easy to see why people come back here. Note to the wise during summer, better not alfresco it, better sit under the a/​c.

This place is mouthwateringly delicious. It’s been a while since I’ve had some good beer battered chips, and Moray café does them well. My sister was visiting from the coast so my brother and I had lunch with her here, and she said it was the best café she’d eaten at in Brisbane.
She ordered the duck spring rolls and bruschetta, my brother went for corn cakes and an iced coffee, and I went with the beer battered fish of the day with beer battered chips, salad, and a fruit mixer (cloudy apple juice with mint and lime). All together my lunch was $ 23.50. It was delicious; the fish was fresh from the fryer, and the chips were crunchy. I would have liked a larger serving of salad though. There’s also a great selection of desserts in the fridge, but we were too stuffed to eat anything else.
I’d recommend coming during lunch time because it’s less busy and the meals are slightly cheaper. I know this because the waitress got our bill wrong; she charged me for the fish at dinner ($ 24), as opposed to the fish at lunch ($ 18.50).

Moray Café is awesome to me for a couple of reasons. 1. It was the first place I tasted hollandaise sauce 2. They are off the strip so you have a decent chance of getting a table quickly on Saturday or Sunday mornings 3. When it’s hot nothing beats their pineapple /​mint frappé (or stalk and stem as we call it).
This list could continue but I’m bored of numbers. Their breakfast menu features ingredients such as chorizo and haloumi, the coffee is good, the vibe is relaxed and the interior is always light even in winter thanks to the skylight.
Oh and there’s beautiful ancient fig trees outside. What more could you want?

Once voted Brisbane’s best breakfast this corner café is a favorite breakfast and brunch spot of mine. I love its leafy location and I can usually find a park nearby without any hassles.
The service is fast and friendly and the coffee is one of the best in the area. Of a weekend it can get quite hectic here so I suggest coming early or testing the waters through the week for your first time.
Not sure if it is officially ‘pet friendly’ but I often see locals bringing their fluffy loved ones along and resting them next to one of the posts or trees that surround the café. It has a very ‘local’ vibe where most people who stop by arrive by foot.
I recommend the sauteed mushrooms or muesli (this in particular is incredible).
