Planet Books

They have a great selection of books and geekery including lots of potential gift ideas. Their greeting cards at the front include Perth based cards that I have never seen elsewhere. They even have chairs which somebody could sit down in while considering books — very rare in bookstores. I will definitely return as I saw gift ideas here for people who are normally really hard to buy for.

Always a good place to get something different, been here for years although it used to be where the mexican joint is now.

It was a sad day when the much loved Planet Video closed it’s doors.
This was a store where you could wander in and always find something fun & exciting to take home. Lucky for us they opened a small book/​record store and café just down the road.
They stock a great range of books from all genres. I can always find something worth reading & it is a great place for gifts. They also have a funny range of gift cards. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
Upstairs they sell records, cd’s etc. I could spend hours in this store.
Support local businesses and buy your books from here instead of some Internationally owned competitors or online retail giant.

This place is heaven. Planet has such a good selection of books. I get positively acquisitive every time I set foot in the front door, to the point where I’ve banned myself from walking on that side of Beaufort Street while going to IGA to get groceries in case I ‘accidentally’ walk in and buy a bundle of books. It’s that good.
I love their current affairs section, and the tables laden with a mix of classics and recently popular titles are particularly dangerous (for my bank balance). Planet has a funky vibe, so it’s a great place to browse. The staff are friendly and are quick to order in anything they don’t have.
Planet Books is a Beaufort Street icon and deservedly so.

Absolutely fantastic bookshop. If you know about this place and don’t visit it while in Perth, you either caught a connecting flight at the airport or have unfortunate taste.

It’s quirky, it’s weird and it’s retro. What’s not to like?
I’ve actually never come across a book store quite like Planet Books before. It just has this feel about it. I don’t know what that feel is quite yet, but it’s a good thing… I think.
Planet Books has a little something for everyone. If you’re an Oprah Book Clubber, a YA teeny bopper or a deeply philosophical weirdo that actually enjoys the literary chaos of Nietzsche, you’ll find it all here. I actually bought the second installment of Twilight here. What can I say? I’m a fan I don’t care what you say.
Grab a coffee and come for a browse. You’ll always find something for yourself or an odd, but awesome gift for someone else. They also carry an assortment of awesome board games and don’t forget to venture upstairs to the music/​nerdy section!

A great little book shop with a range of books geared more towards fans of music and art. They also have the standard sections as well — cooking, fiction etc, but the range is slightly more alternative than most bookstores, it is part of the Planet family after all.
You can rely on Planet Books for a gift for almost anyone. They also have a great selection of all kinds of cards. From beautiful artwork to crude and hilarious.

With technology and electronic devices improving/​increasing, book stores have taken a hit. Only the strong survive, those with character and charm. From what I read about Planet Books, I gather this book store is a Perth icon. With not being a local, the appeal isn’t as inherit.
I was very impressed with the recently held book signing for Paul Carter (author/​Nat. Geo). The free beverages and snacks were a nice surprise, but felt the food offerings were limited. But, then again, it was free… so, it’s hard to complain.
I am not sure how advertising occurs for authors, is it through the book store or through the author, but nevertheless it was rather barren. Picking books off the shelves and flipping through left me looking for overstuffed, comfortable chairs. I found one wobbly stool and felt fortunate. Other high-​heeled patrons were waiting for me to move on.
The staff was lovely. The zombie collection was abundant. And, If you are looking for a book on felting with cat hair, look no further. I didn’t have a chance to price out their merchandise, but if you are looking for a gift in a bind, I’m sure you’d be able to find something including a 132-​piece Game of Thrones board-​game which I just may have my eye on.

Planet books is a store you will lose yourself and track of time in. It is a great gift store for book lovers or people who just like to flick through glossy pictures. It is a really relaxed atmosphere there so you can sit down on the comfy couches and peruse all you like without getting told «It’s not a library, are you going to buy that?», like some places. The variety from classics to music, fiction and science fiction, even childrens books each genre is well represented in this store, there is something for everyone here.

Planet is split up into a few different sections: Video, Music and Books. Then there are the clothes, accessories and tickets they sell to all the hottest events in Perth. Planet is a one stop shop and no trip to Mt Lawley (provided you have cash to spend) is complete without stopping into Planet on your way through. Look out though, you will fall in love with something. No matter what gaming console you use, what style fashion you are, what kind of books you read. You will find something you love and walk out with it.

Plant Video has random selection of books, mags, dvds, records, posters as well as a wide variety of PS2, PS3, X-​BOX, X-​BOX 360, PC, GameCube and Wii games; this retro inspired store is also legendary for their music related collectables and memrobilia. Let your other other browse through the above while us girls do what we do best, shop. Planet stocks labels including One Teaspoon, State of Georgia, Ask Grace, Style Stalker, I.D.S, Fairground, Secret Squirrel and heaps more. Planet has an alternative vibe and also sells tickets to events at equivalent venues, such as the Bakery, Villa and Capitol. If your not found of contemporary fashion and things more mainstream then you will definitely have an appreciation for Planet.

I love when you go to a bookshop knowing exactly what book you want to buy. Sure, it’s also fun meandering around a store picking up books randomly and reading the first few pages to see if they hook, but usually it’s all a bit too overwhelming and I walk out wondering if I’ll ever read a book again. The latter is more a pastime than a consumer pursuit, you might argue. The former, which gets to my point, is made all the richer when the store ACTUALLY HAS the book you’re after. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked into a Dymocks or one of those awful, yet often conveniently-​placed, chain stores and walked out infuriated. HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Planet is like a god-​send in that regard. I had so many wonderful literary adventures when living in Mt Lawley for that reason. It’s a really well-​stocked and catalogued bookstore, and the creaky wooden floorboards and dusty shelves simply add to the enchanting vibe of the place. There are even couches haphazardly placed around the store so you can read a teaser (or more) in comfort.

Any place that carries a large selection of Bukowski’s poetry gets my vote. I absolutely love trawling through the aisles at Planet Books and searching through all the new books and old books.
What particularly intrigued me on my last visit was a large box displayed behind the counter that caught my eye as I was paying. I inquired as to what it was and the guy replied, «Oh, it’s a Vivienne Westwood collectable.» I almost puked with excitement. It was shots of some of her earlier designs, sketches, a real collector’s item. And there were only something ridonkulous like 900 made in the world and Planet Books managed to secure the only one in WA. When I asked him how much it would be he said, «$ 2500»
I died a little. But that’s proof of how cool Planet Books truly is… I think?

Planet Books is attached to its mother video store in the heart of Mt. Lawley. A standard pop-​in point when wandering the streets with a coffee/​slushie/​sugar-​free Red Bull, and frequent provoker of «Oh, I just want to see if they’ve got this thing I want». Usually, the latter makes me clench my teeth to the brink of pain and force out some semblance of an affirmative noise. Planet Books is the exception though.
Another great source of gift ideas and a gold mine for any sort of book enthusiast, Planet has a reasonable selection of fiction and non-​fiction alike, with a comic book section on the furthermost left hand aisle (my personal favourite). Staff picks and sale items litter the front of the store, and I must admit they usually warrant a stop-​and-​flick-​through.
Probably a little pricey, but what are you gonna do?

I feel it’s rather a large call to give your business the kind of name that gives customers expectations of having some sort of out-​of-​this-​world shopping experience. Planet Books doesn’t fail to deliver though, it is like a black hole of awesome. In a similar vein to New Edition, Planet Books is so much more than a bricks and motar building for printed literature. Not only do they provide the very best photography/​cult/​fiction/​non-​fiction and music books (just some of their many genres), they also stock music, dvds, records, clothing, bags, tickets and gifts. Come here for half an hour, and you’ll end curled on the couch with a tower of hardbacks wondering where your evening went (probably right next to a spectacled hipster reading Bukowski). The staff hardly seem to mind though — they seem pretty cool with people browsing the stacks. I’m not sure if anyone ever buys anything from there, it seems more like a place where people go to just chill out!
