I love it when you walk into a shop and you can see yourself moving in! That’s how I felt in Kartique, it has a really rustic organic feeling, while maintaining an air of class. The art work is inspiring and the jewellery selection lining the left hand side of the entrance is captivating. Another woman was delving into the silver so I casually wandered through the shop looking at prints, couches and various gift items. I thought the price was dearer than I’d expected, but it is well made. The shop assistant, while having to spread herself thin, did a good job acknowledging me. Kartique is what makes a house a home.

Walking into Kartique is like walking into a treasure chest. Filled with authentic goodies that glitter and sparkle and speak to your soul. They say: «You might live in Perth, but look at the wondrous jewels you’ve happened upon. You may as well have found us in an old treasure chest on a desert island, after a sweltering day in the sun, spent building your exotic new tree house home». «We could have been made at the edge of a rain forest, on a white sandy beach or in a crammed little stall on a busy Indian street», they continue. To this I say, «Oh, you were not! Don’t lie». I know even the most genuinely hand crafted items probably have a story that falls short of the story concocted in my over-romanticised and often vivid imagination. But, you know, they still look like they could have a more than amazing story behind them. A story that I’m quite happy to believe if it makes me smile. They do sell furniture in here too and cushions etc to go with your exotic new purchases. However, I’m usually more drawn to the jewellery. Something I can easily afford and purchase on the spot appeals to my instant gratification gene. And the jewellery here really is very gratifying. It is unique. It is old worldly and you don’t just get some minerals and semi-precious stones. You get a great story and you get to feel connected to that glorious tale. Better value than Lovisa, I say.

I love Kartique because it reminds me so much of the stores back home in Mauritius, with glass cabinets filled with glistening handcrafted semi precious stones set in silver, silver jewellery masterfully shaped and carved inspired by Indian culture or modern designs and antique wooden furniture and home wares from exotic Eastern destinations. The store itself is setup to coincide with the items it is housing, with a natural and withered feel to it like the walls crumbling away showing the former old bricks behind it and its dark wooden floors giving it an vintage feel. With its rare antique items and stunning jewellery, Kartique has to be on your list of places to visit.

You can be certain to find a one off item at Kartque, as no two pieces are the same. The gorgeous furniture is sourced from far away places and shipped to our shores throughout the year. I took a look inside yesterday and they’re expecting a container from India next month — exciting! Most of the wooden furniture pieces have that beautiful, weathered look. There are cushions, quilts and pieces to store your special belongings, all crafted in Indian and Turkish fabrics. A wonderful range of jewellery is stocked too. Either designed in WA or sourced from abroad, each piece has an ethnic flavour. Necklaces, pendants and rings; mostly in sterling silver or plated in gold and some fitted with precious stones.
