Nothing exceptional to report, but in general the Fat Dragon is a solid performer which is a good place to grab some dinner. Knowing the Mount Lawley’s reputation for being one of the foodie havens for Perth, I did have high expectation for the Fat Dragon and this has probably affected my first impressions. The first impression when I walked in, was that the place was a little dirty and feeling a little tired. It didn’t have a funky Mount Lawley vibe and the décor was a little confused. The décor said Asian Fusion, but the menu said typical Chinese. However, the staff were attentive and friendly. The meals were quick to come out, very tasty and the very reasonably priced. The dishes on offer was a relatively restrained list of the typical Australian — Chinese fare that many of us do love. However, I would have loved to see a greater variety and some more authentic dishes. I guess that there are some bonuses of limiting the menu and sticking to the usual fav’s as you can ensure what you do is the best it can be as well as appealing to a large portion of the Aussie population. Would I go back? It is certainly YES. The Fat Dragon ticks all the boxes for a good meal out while not hammering your bank account.

Magnificent! Now I was supposed to be on a diet but when Fat Dragon was suggested for dinner, all ideas of healthy eating went out the window pretty damn quickly. Worth it! The interior was very stylish, the staff very friendly and the food DIVINE. I judge a place by their wonton soup and their fried rice and they passed with flying colours. The soup was perfection, the dumplings very tasty and the fried rice was full of tasty meat and vegetables. You win this round Fat Dragon! Until we meet again.

Ordered take away for dinner, Chicken Chow Mein. I was hungry and excited. It turned out to be uncooked(hard) noodles on top of soggy chicken and broccoli stems and ooze! Not good.

The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is quite funky for a Chinese joint. But, I think we must have really ordered wrong. We got a wonton soup and sweetcorn and chicken soup. The wontons and broth were actually really good if a tiny bit salty towards the end. The problem is that it came out 5 minutes after the other soup. The sweetcorn soup was watery and tasteless. So tasteless Even a whole handful of pepper wouldn’t have saved it. The steamed rice was far too much for two people and was over cooked and blah. The Asian veggies with garlic tasted like they had burned a piece of paper in the wok before tossing the veggies in. The chicken and Chinese mushrooms had very little mushroom but lots of bland sauce. And strangely the chicken had been fried before being covered by a sauce you would normally find on a braised dish. I felt that for the quality it was over priced but I’m guessing like many Chinese restaurants you have to figure out what they are actually good at and avoid the rest. I’d give it another go, but I really didn’t enjoy my first venture there.

Well, it is the Chinese year of the dragon. Of course I felt obliged to try this oft’ driven by very timely dining experience. And I’m very glad I did. I felt like a lucky dragon both during and after my meal. Not a fat dragon though. I’m way too vain to ever announce I felt like a fat dragon. I definitely felt much more like a lucky dragon who had eaten heaps of really sumptuous food, but had a fast metabolism so burnt it all off really quickly. The décor is a bit more chic than the usual 80s style Chinese restaurants I often frequent. The bright red chairs dotted around the room gave a slicker and appropriately more Mount Lawley feel to the restaurant than I’m used to. But they still had a big round table with a lazy susan, for big groups and lovers of all things 80s. The food is simply amazing and, put quite simply, they seem to get things right here. The right combination of whatever they put in Chinese food(hey, I’m no chef), probably cooked for the right amount of time on the right amount of heat to create pure divinity. If you like chilli and you like squid, get the chilli dish. Delicious enough to be this restaurant’s signature dish and enough to warrant a name change to The Hot Dragon. The service was amazing too. At the end of my meal, I felt like a dancing(not fat) dragon.

I love this place. Let’s start with the look of it. All minimalist and clean jet-red and black décor with a buddha here and a buddha there, but lots of room between the tables. There’s a large round table available by booking, complete with lazy Susan, so as you and a group of friends or family can dine old-skool Chinese-style. The patronage is eclectic: young spunky couples, small groups of indie-looking groovers, and, if ever I’ve seen a full family dining here, it’s never been one of those noisy ones that seem to let their boisterous kids take over the joint while neglecting to realise there are others that prefer a quieter environment to dine in. But to the main thing: the food. It’s all good and all glorious; what friends and I have tried anyway. To start, we shared some Crispy Duck and Shitake Mushroom Dumplings, and Fried Sesame Seafood with a Chilli Mayonnaise. Both entrees were very more-ish, but we insisted on holding out for mains instead of double-ordering entrees. For mains, we shared Sichuan King Prawns, some Hong Kong style Kway Teow, and Cod served with Chinese Mushrooms. The servings are way generous, so two entrees and three mains were enough to share between the four of us. With not one complaint amongst us, we all agreed to return here sooner than later. Yep, five stars.

Yep, Fat Dragon is what you will become. Except a happy dragon, not like Shruikan the evil bastard who wants to topple mountains and kill people. No, after eating some awesome Chinese you will be very, very content. The service is great too, very friendly, though I’ve had some Friends who said the service was lacking. I’m putting this down to the fact that they went recently after it had opened. The flavours of the meals were mouthwatering. Being a fan of chilli mussels I thought I’d entertain the chilli squid, which turned out to be the best idea as it was just ridiculous. There is outdoor seating, but during the summer months its a no-go zone for sure. Inside = safe.

This place is awesome! Fully licensed(always worth a gold star, I feel), dine in, take-away, delivery… Whichever way you want amazing Chinese food, you’ll get it at Fat Dragon. And for a decent price, too(there’s another gold star…) Meals vary in price a bit, but you’re looking at around $ 20 on average — and the portions are very generous. I thoroughly recommend the Hung Siu Braised Tofu with Vegies. Drool… Fat Dragon is open for lunch Thursday — Sunday, and open for dinner every day of the week. If you live in Mount Lawley and love Chinese food, you’ve got to give Fat Dragon a try.
